How to protect glass art.

Post by swoopee57 » Wed Feb 01, 2006 3:21 pm

HI all,

I'm looking at making a large installation piece using neon sculpture and other glass. Any ideas of how to keep people from grabbing or touching and breaking glass.

Thanks,
Tim

I've seen neon art on the playa, but I don't know the name of the camp, so I don't know how to get hold of the peeps.

Use uninsulated high-voltage wire leads, and run 'em along the tubes. ZOT!

That is cool, a squid car.

I will look into posting 24/7 guards, but would like advice for installation of neon.

So you looked through the Image Gallery (see link in prev post) for possible clues as to how others handle it?

So is it bigger than a bar sign?

How about you stick it on a six-inch pole?

no funds, no project this year

Post by swoopee57 » Wed Feb 08, 2006 7:38 pm

Sorry to get people's hopes up, if i actually got people to think my idea was good. I don't think that I can make the project for the Man 06, I will have to wait to find out the Theme 07.

BUT I am detemined to bring my Neon and Glass Sculptures to the man. Stay tuned to find out what will happen next.

neon on the playa.

Post by Friendly Jen » Thu Feb 16, 2006 11:56 am

The Squid was constantly having to replace tubes to bring a lot of extras. If it's a sign well the BRCPO signs do pretty well best is to have an enclosure that protects the transformers from the dust. That's where stuff goes wrong. If you want to get in contact with the maker of the squid I might have his e-mail or number laying around.

Of course, the BRCPO sign doesn't go bouncing around in the dust atop a golf cart....

Sometimes neon just craps out on you, regardless of what TLC you use. Any single piece that's at the core of your artistic statement ought to be backed up or at least siliconed all to hell. I would consider any piece of neon that I brought to the playa to be disposable- Don't bring that 100-bend beer sign that cost you the feeling in two fingertips to make unless you pack it in a big 'ol crying towel.

If you bring and consequently break any neon tubing that's colored in the cool part of the spectrum or bright white, odds are that you're littering more than just glass- There's mercury in there, too. Enough to close down a school, if you spilled it in science class. There's SCARY quantities of the stuff in any sign shop, and the regulations are very loose. I've got so much in me from my tubebending days that I stand up straight on hot days....
