Looking for cigarette boxes

Post by diane o'thirst » Sun Feb 19, 2006 10:30 pm

Good evening all —

Planning a rather PUNCH-y anti-smoking installation for my Playa project this year. I'll take your empty cigarette papers/boxes/cartons/packs off your hands and turn them into an artistic social statement.

Also, I'm searching for broken "cancer awareness" bracelets, memorabilia, et alia. Got the intact ones covered; my social worker at the Cancer Center is collecting cancer awareness trinkets for me.

Thanks so muchly much Image

You remember correctly Image

Currently drawing up the basic design, couldn't decide whether to make the Jack in the shape of a coyote or monkey. So far the monkey's winning out.

Here's a note from Freecycle in Rochester, NY:
From: "xlvs16win" <xlvs16win@...>
Date: Wed Feb 22, 2006 6:49 am
Subject: OFFER: Plastic shopping bag full of empty Newport cig boxes-E Roch

My son USED to smoke (yea he QUIT!!)nd he was saving the empty Newport boxes to get enough UPC's (or whatever proof of purchase was needed) to send in and get (choose item from their mail in catalog). He no longer wants them and I wanted to offer them here before putting them in my blue recycle box. First person to respond will get them this time - pick up in E Roch. Thanks.
Let me know if you'd like them ... I can pick them up and ship them to you if you want.
May your deeds return to you tenfold,

Yes, please! I'll PM you my address.

I tried my local Freecycle and I'm coming up goose eggs.

Thanks Jayce, got the package you sent me.

Everyone, send more! I'm accepting coupons, adverts, posters, Camel Dollars, cartons, tobacco tins, pouches and cigar tubes, too.

Yep, in my PM inbox. One more question though, do you mind if I carefully take them apart so they are flat? I don't mean cut them up completely but just undo the 'seams' so I can fold them open. That would probaly make it easier to send.

Okay, I've got 2 dozen plus a chunk of a Bugler display box and the plastic wrap off of a sleeve of Skoal cans.
In another month I'll have another 3 dozen cartons (a little more than a carton a day right now).
They're mostly Bronco(generic), but also Camel and Marlboro with some side strips from Winstons, Virginia Slims, and Swisher Sweets.
Do you have an approximation of how many you'll need?
Most of the ones I've collected are 11"x4"x1-3/4"

I need to cover 30 square feet. The panels are 4x4 (16 sq. ft per panel x 2, verged on 4 sides w/six inches of scrolled and painted veneer). Two will be painted with scenes, the lid will be covered with 3D decors to discourage climbing on top, the other two will be cig packaging collages. Right now I figure I have enough cig packages to cover 5-6 square feet so I'm about 1/5th of the way there. That amount is comprised of three grocery-bag sized parcels.

I thought about approaching the various tobacco shops around here but I don't want to get beaten up.

Maybe you could email / call / contact the big cig companies and ask for misprints or just plain new cartons. At least in Holland some companies will try to prevent negative attention, and positive attention might be concidered good...

Bump.

An Announcement:
I just found out that one of my old campmates and friends from Opera Camp passed away of kidney cancer yesterday.

I've decided to make one of the panels of Smoke-in-the-Box a memorial wall.

If anyone within the sound of my 0's and 1's has photographs of friends, loved ones and colleagues who've succumbed to the Cancer Plague, send 'em my way and I'll include them on the Memorial Panel. I promise to treat them with loving, even reverential respect. The Memorial Panel on Smoke-in-the-Box will be an element of calm gentleness in an array of feckless satire, martial passion and cautionary irony. This installation will not be burned.
