Home sweet Home Spect!

Image

The Oklahoma state flag honors more than 60 groups of Native Americans and their ancestors. The blue field comes from a flag carried by Choctaw soldiers during the civil war. The center shield is the battle shield of an Osage warrior. It is made of buffalo hide and decorated with eagle feathers. Two symbols of peace lie across the shield. One is the calumet, or peace pipe. The other is an olive branch. Crosses on the shield are Native American signs for stars, representing high ideals.

Yep. Burningman is swarming with flags...
...it`s how you find your way home quite often.
...at night you run a string of lights up your pole and
you`ve got a pretty twinkling flag.(sounds dirty huh?) Last year we spray-painted
"Mind Kampf" on a sheet with neon colors and hoist it up about 20` .
We had a 2millioncandle spotlight on it a couple of nights, ...looked pretty cool....

here`s something Montana posted earlier : sharpen your flag identifying skills...

so....everyone is comfortable with the alteration of this threads title?

sure the troll who wrote it was trying to be offensive....but isn't that allowed? people say things that offend people all the time on this site...

free speech..y'know?

we were all doing a good job of shoving the rude in the little jackass's face...and then it goes all Big Brother.

I know it's not really 'public', and that the mods are perfectly within their rights to shut down, shut up and shove off irritating asses.....

I guess I just think there was a better way--even locking the thread and letting it get pushed out of existence would have been better....

You did read over the posts from the beginning, right? You did see that the poster was not 'shut up' or censored in that absolute way, and I asked if being locked was what someone wanted, right? It may have been changed, but I thought it was a really good suggestion with a much stronger message to incorporate and subvert, rather than deny someones right to be heard. It was also a fantastic show of self-moderation rather than depend on mods, anyone could have made this request to Emily.

yah, spectabilis, I read the whole thing.

The point I'm commenting on is the alteration from 'fags' to 'flags'

The subverted thread worked great--until the title was changed.

The change makes the subversion of the thread unclear, it alters what actually happened, in favor of a rectified version of events.

and that just doesn't sit as well with me as making fun of the poster...

Yep, I get that, and it is a form a censorship - but just a really benign one. Its not clear if people are just reading by the title, on the other hand if it was locked it would sink from sight. But if someone takes the time to read through, they will see yours, mine, and everyone else's comments and know what it was, and what its all about. I just like it because it turns something negative into positive, people came together and have some fun with it, and being creatively subversive is part of the bman spirit.

No good deed goes unpunished....
And try as you might especially as an admin or moderator you won't be able to please everyone. While the concern raised is valid...there's the flipside of allowing an offensively titled thread to remain in public view like that. Only small alterations were made that anyone not skimming through should be able to figure out.

IMHO, making this change was better than leaving it alone. This is an open online community that does not condone any "attacks" on someone based on their sexual orientation. The consensus was this needed to go...the admins and mods did it. They deserve kudos for doing it too..

I don't think censoring the past can be benign---altering what actually happened in favor of a false view is never a good thing.

Here we are in all our filth and glory, this is what we've said, this is what we've done. Here there is good and bad, things of pride, and things of shame.

This is what we did when someone was rude to us....

I know I'm beating a horse that's probably to steps from a compost heap, but this is really important--

our media and our government--and a whole lot of world media and government just tossed free speech into that dustbin of history(or is it ash heap? ashbin?) that people are always going on about. They caved. They allowed someone to tell us that our free speech stops at a point of their choosing.

I know it's not exactly the same thing, but it's far better to leave it there--discuss it, revile it, ridicule it--but don't hide it. Never hide it.

And Kinetic, I understand the whys of the reason it was altered, but I still don't think that makes them the right course of action.

This horse has been beat before. It's why the ability for individuals to delete threads and cover their tracks was removed and many other changes were made over the years. However my take on this one is the admins chose to act under the TOS which prohibits...well here's what it says.

The following is a partial list of the kind of Content that is illegal or prohibited on the Eplaya. Burning Man reserves the right to investigate and take appropriate legal action in its sole discretion against anyone who violates this provision, including without limitation, removing the offending post from the Service and terminating the membership of such violators, in connection with all available civil, criminal, and injunctive remedies. You agree not to use the Service to:

post, email, transmit or otherwise make available any Content that is unlawful, harmful, threatening, abusive, harassing, tortious, defamatory, vulgar, obscene, libelous, invasive of another's privacy, hateful, or racially, ethnically or otherwise objectionable;

They had the option to delete the whole thing but instead they made the slight change and kept the thread functional. So what's better....going hardcore rules and wiping the whole thing out or making the mod and letting the community learn and grow from it? It's clear what side I'm on this time...I expect you'll disagree with me so we'll agree to disagree and move on. I don't want to flog this horse right now.

soooo, should I do this? I can, sure, but it is cheating others from looking it up themselves...and besides the debate has moved on from the thread poster to other issues...nevertheless the teenager should get some slack just because...and it is a good intro:
President Brown (1st post, on the Introduction thread)
Hi, im jeff...but you can call me President Brown, as do all of my freinds. I am 16 and im a halfway Burning man virgin....you see i have been, but i have not experienced nor celebrated the event. I went when i was thirteen with my father(who i have not seen in years). But we only went for one night to watch the man burn. I thought it wasn't right and i plan to make my own trip out this year of 2006 with some freinds. I plan to stay the intire time being that i was fasinated by the event when I was younger. I live about 60 miles away from the black rock in a small hippy redneck town(i don't mean that in a bad way at all) called Imlay neavada. I have been exploring the desert surroundings around me sense i was able. i go out to the black rock every month just for the drive. Even when it is winter and the playa is impassable i make the drive to brunos and eat just for the hell of it...

I and my family come from very irish/scottish roots, i love my heritage and am prideful, greatful, and lucky to be who i am. My favorite color is green(go figure) and i love nature. I love nature so much in fact, i live 15 miles away from my nearest neighbor(imlay). my stepfather owned this 400 acre piece of land that i live on. He had big plans to mine it and spend the rest of his days doing what he truley enjoyed...mining. But, when the mill of the mine was finished. And he had spent all of his savings on it. He became terminally ill and died of cancer. So now, its just me and my 52 year old mother living the mountain life(no power grid, no phone lines) in a cabin....and i couldn't love life any more than i do now, and i hope it never changes.
