cryptofish,

Gods, including fashion ones, complain they never get any attention, the solution thus is not in pampering those who do give you attention, its in changing what others imagine of you. Of course not to get a backlash from Scott, any pampering a God does is always appreciated.

That sounds a lot like a bluff to me, an attempt to sound mysterious by being merely incoherent.

Hey cool, we're in business.. where was I?? I'm slow at multitasking.. thought everybody checked out.

Yeah, Dustbuddy.. Socrates said it: "The only thing I know is that I know nothing at all"

And some other wise mucky muck said: "Knowing makes no difference"
but I still think understanding is worth striving for sometimes, so we can at least make some informed choices and try and connect some dots.. though I get that "understanding" is a total rabbit hole too and can take us out of the "dance" if we're not careful.. maybe it's more about avoiding the assumptions than understanding.

BTW the makeup is a curious thing, though.. like donning a mask. Little story: I used to work in this swank bar in Montreal, and it was somehow totally necessary to do the work. I'd put on gold shadow, red lipstick, put on this gown, heels and jewelry, slap a smile on my face (no longer "mine"?) and do battlle.. "smile pretty and watch your back" as ani difranco said. I'm sure anyone who's worked in a bar knows what I'm talking about: guys get drunk, girls get grabbed, even in the swank establishments.. actually probably more so, populated with moneyed men used to getting what they want.. it's quite a fucked up experience, but it's like you were playing a part or something.
Now i just feel like a total drag queen in makeup and heels.. which is sometimes kinda fun. :)

Princess,

Do you really think drag queens would still do it, if it weren't kinda fun? Now there is a group of mis-understood people. Its not odd to feel akin to them, they are just seeking an elan denied most of us in everyday life. Actually, that most straight folk aren't aware of a need for elan is why BM is so popular, to my way of thinking. Of course there may be a myraid of different reasons, perhaps as many as why humanity finds women attractive?

I'm still here too... just reading...
I used to not understand drag queens very much. I thought that even women who dressed up that much seemed so fake and the guys seemed like they thought they looked better than women do. Until I accidently got the movie "Wigstock". I noticed an element with the drag queens that was missing in women who were over dressed. They had a boldness, that was non conforming, exaggerating and making fun of themselves. Something even Madonna doesn't have. Ever since then I've tried to absorb that attitude, even when I'm not dressed up.

caged,

Nice insight, I have met men who say they feel less challenged and more comfortable with drag queens than regular women. One of the books about Jesus not included in the Bible tells us that he was so frustrated with his deciples and their indifference that he threatened to turn women into men so women could be seen as people. Now it was just a threat, perhaps not a just threat but does it have some bearing on where our collective heads are at?

going back a bit

Post by rob easy » Sat Mar 11, 2006 7:40 pm

Well, a thread with a lot of crap and a few gems.

I can't really answer what "women are about" 'cause it's just too big a question. Ther are just too many different people under the heading "women". I realize this is getting back into the bullshit over generalization which is a fruitless dead-end. The posts that have said the most have really been about how individuals relate to women. Posts from both men and women. So I'll weigh into that one.

If you can take sex out of the picture it gets much easier to think about. I found this with friends who are dykes or have made it blatantly obvious they are not interested. Then I generally get an interesting view on life from them. Not to mention some of my best drinking buddies. Women generally have grown up with a different view on the world because the world treats them different. Yeah, there are significant physical differences and they would remain if the cultural ones vanished but I think the impact of the physical differences is less than the cultural one.

Now, it gets more complicated with sex thrown back into the mix. You can end up with the best of both worlds or end up in a world of confusion and fuck-ups. Sounds like some of the people here have found both.

I know there's likely to be more dosing, more sexual assaults, and more frat-boy crap, and I'll be doing whatever I can to watch out for this kind of thing. I just hope I can in the moment respond appropriately if someone's a total asshole again, instread of being rendered speechless. Any suggestions?
Another question here is why do guys yell things out, like from the art cars. My answer to that is there are many reasons but basically the reason doesn't matter. There are places where it's reasonable (strip bars come to mind - though generally even that's pretty limited) but basically they are just being rude arseholes. While I admire any attempt to get them to ask themselves why they are doing this I'd suggest the first person to look after is yourself. Not to make your response be conditional on doing something for them. I'd suggest that if your physical safety is assured then consider it as challenge to yourself to tell them to **** [your choice of 4 letter word] off or similar. You're the first person you should consider coming out of the interchange with ego intact. I've seen similar though not the same sort of situations and it does give you a buzz knowing you dealt with it on your own terms.

Rob,

Excellant advice, I have noticed that women lead with their chin more often than not in any exchange of differing viewpoints. Its as if they naturally want to project that they are being aggressive, and there is no reasonable way to point out the dangers of such a stance either while they are being aggressive.

Folks, I think what we have here is a dead horse. Thank you, and good night.

End of thread.
