I am new here

Post by scotsman » Wed Feb 15, 2006 5:47 pm

I don't know much about the art scence for Burning Man, or truly that much of the vent itself, only that it's something different. Something worthy, even. I would just like to know if writers have any place in the creation of any artistic projects. It is a passion for me, and I believe in its value as an art form. I also hope I don't sound like a condecending dickhead. It's kind of intimidating, really, the scope of this thing. Never been part of a real community before, you know? But I want to do something for it.

YAAAAYYYY!!! I've seen a number of pieces that involved writing on some level. One was a little room with an altar and a book, like a diary. It started off with the creator's comments, then left it to other people to fill the rest. As each person came in, they would spend as much or as little time as they wanted to reading previous bits(kind of like here), then add their two cents, or nonsense, or just quote some really cool poetry, or whatever. If you want to be interactive, you could bring a chair and a little shade, invite people to sit and talk, then you write whatever comes to you from that, or even just wander from camp to camp and talk to people, write, read different people excerpts, or even get people to act out what you've written on the Stage of Humiliation. The possibilities are endless, as endless as the playa. Beautiful!!

Last I checked this was still a Do-ocracy. There's rarely such a thing as a bad BM project...excluding racing giant pirate ships and out of control mammoth sharks racing through the streets. Writers certainly have a place out there....the ideas for interactive writing projects are already coming up as I think about this. I recall someone taking various words and mounting them on little pieces of posterboard with magnets behind them and they let people arrange them into sentences on any topic they wanted. I remember seeing large sketchbooks put out where people could write their thoughts on various subjects. I don't have time to break down everything that comes to mind but the point I want to make is almost any skillset, almost any idea can find a place and most likely be embraced at Burning Man. BM is really whatever you want it to be, you get out of it what you put into it. Do some more reading and research and I wish you the best of luck with whatever ideas you attempt.

And one little rant....scrap the idea of building something "worthy". It's art. If you build it to draw the masses you'll be swamped by the other projects out there. Build it for yourself, put it out there and while there's always some who won't like it, you'll find some that do and those are the people you want to impress anyway. It's also your first project, and the fact that you took time to build something at all to contribute will also influence others!

Oh and welcome to the eplaya!

Scotsman,

Some of the first art was also the first writing. Mamoths and tigers, men and animals, all left to us paintd on the wals of ancient caverns by cavemen. You are in good company. Write away! :D

There was a camp one year with hundreds of haiku prayer flags fluttering in the wind. People would come by and read some or all. It was quite fetching. They collected the haikus from various people, some at the barrel of a gun or the point of a knife, those were the haikus with grit and savagery and stained shorts. Some were mundane, some sacred or profane; brief disquisitions on the nature of love or ant attacks or an orderly universe and a chaotic whorled vortex of yearning or attempted grace. One concerned "wee twee mini-sporrans" and clearly this is a phrase that continues to haunt.

Learning how to say "fuck off" at least in your own head makes for less intimidation and ultimately a more open heart.
