"The human body consists of:
65% Oxygen
18% Carbon
10% Hydrogen
3% Nitrogen
1.5% Calcium
1% Phosphorous
0.35% Potassium
0.25% Sulfur
0.15% Sodium
0.15% Chlorine
0.05% Magnesium
0.0004% Iron
0.00004% Iodine
Which costs about $1.00 if it were recycled.
You just have to learn to put up with the funny looks you get when dropping off a corpse at the recycling plant."

NO! Don't listen to what THEY say!

THEY are here to eat your children. I can prove it, just don't question my proofs. THEY are always evil, THEY have never done anything for anyone.

What? THEY are gone? Oh...

The new THEY are here to eat your children. Follow our emotions, WE are always right! If YOU don't agree with all that WE say, then YOU are THEY!

"I now choose to forgive all others and myself for any negative experience I have ever had, or ever will have. All of my experiences are simply stepping stones back to my ‘C’ student social worker cum therapist who refuses to call me back when I’m in crisis, doesn’t take my fucking checks, files her nails while I’m spilling my guts and nods her head like one of those fucking dashboard dogs every time I utter a fucking word. Fuck her!"

Communities are built on the recognition of the unique abilities of every member. Commerce and the public service sector define us on the basis of deficiency and need.

Not at all. Actual "needs" are few and make up only a tiny fraction of the economy. The production, promotion, and acquisition of stuff that nobody really requires makes up the overwhelming bulk of most people's livlihood.

Most of what you actually need has for some time been produced as a commodity, and has been dropping in price (in honest constant dollars) for generations.

Manipulation of insecure people's desires is where the big money is. To take one simple example, tennis shoes used to be what you bought your kids because they cost ten bucks a pair. Nowadays many modern public school kids think they'll be social outcasts if they're not wearing $150+ tennis shoes. This is a triumph of salesmanship more than anything else. (But it's a triumph of profitability too since those $150 shoes cost less than ten bucks to produce in Asia.)

But the success of commerce has been to use that salemanship to manipulate people's needs till they go for the wrong things. A 99 cent burger at McDonalds instead of an $8 salad from the whole foods market, or a three dollar salad from the produce stand, for example. All of which I am guilty of.

Even with the dropping price of needs, they're still hard to come by in a lot of different situations. When I lived in a ghetto, the supermarkets were more expensive then in the nice neighborhoods. And millions of people still starve when we've got ten times the food we need to feed everbody. According to a lot of commerce and society, those hungry people are deficient in money, or a desirable geographical location, or an effective government.

It's not just insecure people who go for this. It can include anyone who gets bombarded daily with the messages that the people with a purpose put down on them. We all have a need for food, but commerce succeeds in convincing us that we don't have time to sit down and eat, or time to make a salad, or enough money for a healthy diet, or are somehow too deficient to get by unless we make this accomodation to the opinions of the many.

That's a great part about the lack of commerce at Burning Man. That you can step away from those messages. That's something I like about here too. People here aren't trying to sell a particular kind of groupthink.
