Has anyone read The Tipping Point, by Malcome Gladwell?

Post by Chicken John » Sat Mar 11, 2006 2:46 pm

I think the book is fascinating. I think if any of you "burners" read that book... we could all participate in a very interesting discussion.

I encourage you to read it. I have an essay project that I think is relevent and encouraging for everyone. The Burners Without Borders things has brought to the forground some very interesting debates and they are all interesting and not derogatory. So if you guys wanna play nice, you can either stay tuned or visit the Borg2 Tribe.

But you won't understand much of what we are talking about unless you read:

Ok, Tipping Point is a great book. But what you're really doing is painting a giant flame target on your forehead.

It's classic Chicken John. That's the intent. But instead of drawing flames he wants discussion instead.

Chicken, as a trustfund baby, you need to hear this...

Post by DarrylVanRhey » Thu Mar 23, 2006 11:23 am

Dear Chicken: you are a trustfund baby, who was born with a huge silver spoon in your mouth, and, as a result, you've never had to do a day of real work in your life. If you had, you'd realize that you don't fuck with a man's living. Burning Man is how Larry pays the bills; it's how he expects to fund his retirement; it's his business. He didn't tell you how to run the Odeon Bar, did he? Maybe you should butt out of his business too.

I know that you, and a lot of other second-rate artists and performers, who would never have had an audience had it not been for Burning Man, feel that you have some sort of ownership stake in the event. But you don't. Sure, you worked for Larry for free, and you gave him your art for free--but that means nothing. Despite your whole circus-master schtick, you're nothing but a rube, a mark whom Larry exploited in order to make money. And, frankly, he had every right to do so.

So why don't you go away, spend your inherited wealth on your tiresome, derivative performances, and let the grown-ups make some money?

HEY!!! :D

I remember YOU!!!

You're the person who posts here rarely, and when you do, it's to take some obscure pot-shot at someone in the org. Probably over some personal gig none of the other eplayans know (or care) about that happened years ago. Am I close???

Not like I care... but wasn't the last tirade against Marian? And you've ALWAYS had this thing for CJ. (Lessee... it was 2004, your very first post, where you mentiond the silver spoon thing.) :?

Not that I have anything against you personally... Really, darling, I don't... but every time you post, there seems to be an... agenda. Deep enough so even I remember last time you were here, stirring it up. 8)

How about this for a weird, bizarre suggestion? Get over it, and practice some love instead. Just a thought...

I LOVE your use of smilies. That actually made my day. So there's some love for a change.

Well Darryl, I think it's pretty amazing that you have so much insight to my personal life without ever having met me. You are just making excuses. You don't know how to read, do you? Why in the world would you think that I'm 'fucking with Larry's living'? Why, I'm just asking people to read a book. I thought it might be a fun project, and an intersting way to make a point. But you need to bring things down to such a street level... next thing you know, you'll be threatening me.... ya wanna meet at the flagpole after school?

You go be a good boy, Darryl. You go read that book. Then you think about all the salesman that BM has. Think of the approval of all the Mavins. Then you will start to see that you are surrounded by connectors.

Now what are we gonna do with all this energy? How do we make it tip into the world? First thing we do is ask 3 questions: #1 is Has BM tipped? There are 2 more comming. All in good time.

Enjoy the day...

*sigh* ja, something about marian being a racist, some innuendo of a borg member assaulting a woman, now some poke at chicken john... it dates back years...

it was just crossposted to tribe so i suspect its the same person. but anyways, i think everyone knows by now not to take anything he posts seriously.

your not paying enough attention. Notice the sentence structure. Notice the descriptive comments never co-joining with supportive comments. Darryl is a writer. A very, very good writer. Darryl is a very wise, very astute person who writes a great deal about BM. Likely, the best read person any of us know.

You would do well to pay careful and close attention.......

I prefer not to move on. I will be here, if over there is unsatisfactory. I see no reason to move on. There are interesting things happening here. There is a lot of energy. There are even smart people if you wade through the muck. I have proof:

This is so banal and so inane that I've deleted what I was gonna post to post this. And in fact, it can go on by itself. I don't care any more.

And that's sad...

I"m sorry, is my project not exciting enough for you? Ya know, I've been called many things in my career as an insultant but banal and inane are new ones.

I'm truly sorry that BM is talked into the ground. I mean that.

"Darryl VanRhey" is an anagram of "Larry Harvey." Kinda.

Actually, Larry + "D," Harvey + "N." Hmmm... some sort of riddle!

FUN!

Darth Nader?

Anyhow, I'm with Chicken that D.N. is a very clever fellow (or gal) and don't mind the occasional acerbic-flavored post. Everyone should be able to stand a little vitamin "C" for criticism. Without an opponent, the shuttlecock doesn't go back and forth, and badminton becomes somewhat useless. A grain of salt with your rose hips.

Maybe it's an outsder who wants to look close enough to Larrry to make it look like it *might* be him. :o

Or maybe it *is* him.

Or maybe it's the martians.

Maybe it's a south american consortium tryng to buy the rights to burning Man llc so it can be used for their evil purposes.

I really doubt it is Larry - No one who runs a company would do that to those on the inside unless he were deliberately trying to scuttle the company. And I've SEEN, first hand, event CEO's scuttle their events by making such grevious errors...

Larry seems way too sharp to do something *that* silly, unless he's planning on retiring. And that's a hell of an expensive way to retire.

Unles there's a stash of funds in Aruba or somesuch... 8)

Then again, there *is* that (semi)lakefront property in Gerlach...

It's bad form....

Oops... sorry. I shall heretofore act like nothing is going on.

All right... everyone step away from the players... nothing going on here... move along now, Johnny... there you go... Move along now.

Whoever you guys are, you sure make interesting reading. Nice insider stuff - enough to make it seem like you really ARE on the inside... of something. The question is, of course... is it firstcamp or a JOTS? :?:

Now returning you to your sponsor... (and we thought the whole herring/apokiliptika thing was fun!) 8)

The image of the desert as an anologue of cyberspace—as an interactive, spontaneous and anti-hierarchic medium—has profoundly affected the aesthetic of Burning Man.—and: A second attribute of art at this event relates to the world of nature and myth. The art of Burning Man, like work which has evolved within traditional societies, is tied to primal unities of time and place. The struggle to survive amid vast and inhuman natural forces has profoundly affected the character of this art.

Classic. You should see him ask the waitress where the bathroom is...

"Excuse me. My name is Larry Harvey. I am the director of a temperal zone of beleived autonomy that occurs annually in the most inhospitable local in the northern hemisphere. I curate impossible works of art & play with medifores of cognative phycho-symetry to the end of invocing a primal conhesiveness amongst the revelers to replicate the activivty to their own geographic venue. I'm sure that this restaurant, like my own Black Rock City, has many challenges to overcome to survive. Our biggest issue is with the potation of human waste and to begile a vendor to do business with, I'm sure you understand. I wonder if you could direct me to your facility to which I might find.... ahhh... eeerrrrr.... a room, in which to rest... a toilet... possibly a hand washing sink... I beleive firmly in the jucture of sanitation and civic responsability and hope you likewise will allow my enterance to said facility. Thank you.
