Lucite or other acrylic

Post by bringer » Sun Mar 26, 2006 8:37 pm

Hey there everybody.

I'm looking for a supplier of some sort of acrylic resin that I can pour into molds to make, well, acrylic sculpture.

I've been googling a couple of days now, but to no avail.
I think I might not be using for right search terms.

Has anybody got any suggestions for me or links to distributors?

thanx in advance!

Try "scenery resin." That's what it's called in the taxidermy business and it's nice. Crystal clear and non-yellowing.

How much do you need? Research Mannikins has it.

Edit: Check out "Wonder Water" under "Habitat Materials."

thanx all.
I've ordered a quart of resin to test out and some silicone mold making compound.

You'll end up needing a LOT more quantity than you think for anything 3 dimensional. I filled up a plexiglass breakfast tray up with all my best BM treasure trinkets and layered them in using epoxy resin. The result is awesome, but it took three full quart cans @ $14 each.

Hardware stores sell it at about that price, but if you go to a Home Depot or professional paint and lacquer store, you might get a lower price.

Do it outside, far far away from any windows. It lets off nasty, toxic fumes for a couple days. Wear gloves - you have to use acetone to scrub it off your skin. If you put any paper (like cut out images, photos, etc) in it, it has to be coated or sealed, or plastic-like, because the resins makes paper totally transparent - even laser printed images on paper.

Post some images of what your'e making!

I don't work with acrylic, but I'd suggest finding a solvent OTHER than acetone. Your body cannot excrete actone, it accumulates in your liver until you build up a toxic dose, then you die. Never apply acetone to your skin.

Again, use gloves.

Acetone works but is very nasy. Eats up your skin.

It goes right thru most gloves in about 10 seconds.
I could not find any truly acetone resistant gloves.

Thick rubber gloves may work somewhat.

What's insane is the main ingredient in womans nail
polish remover is Acetone.
