News story from Seattle Times
From the Seattle Times
Police don't know yet why a gunman in his late 20s shot six people to death and then killed himself just after 7 this morning at a home in Seattle's Capitol Hill neighborhood.
At a news conference in the stunned neighborhood this afternoon, Seattle Police Chief Gil Kerlikowske said the shooter, a local man whose name has yet to be released, killed six young men and women inside and outside the house "execution style."
Armed with a 12-gauge pistol-grip shotgun and a semiautomatic handgun, the man prowled the home's second story looking for more targets, Kerlikowske said, missing two people locked in a bathroom. When he left the house, the gunman was confronted by a Seattle police officer who happened to be in the neighborhood. The officer was standing between the shooter and two injured victims. When the officer confronted the gunman, the man put the gun to his head and killed himself.
Six people, whose names have not been released, died at the scene – including the gunman. Three others were taken to Harborview Medical Center, where one man died and the other two remain hospitalized.
The shooting took place at a home in the 2100 block of East Republican Street.
When the man opened fire, people poured from the house in search of a place to hide, said Jakob Kayser, 22, whose backyard abuts the rental home.
Kayser said two young men and a young woman, all appearing to be in their late teens or early 20s, pounded on his back door. They demanded to use his phone to call police.
They told Kayser that one of their friends was dead and another was bleeding heavily. After calling for help, the three took off, he said.
If you have information about the shooting, call The Seattle Times at (206) 464-2144 or email us at [email protected]. Please include your contact information.
Police loaded the uninjured partygoers into buses and took them to a precinct headquarters for interviewing, Pruitt said.
Nancie Thorne, whose 15-year-old daughter, Suzanne, was in the house when the man opened fire said she learned about what happened when Suzanne's 18-year-old boyfriend called her this morning.
"It's the worst phone call a mom can get," said Thorne, who went to the Capitol Hill home after getting the call.
She said she doesn't know where Suzanne is now.
The girl, her boyfriend Jesse Mullens and another friend had gone to what Thorne called a "zombie rave," a hard-core electronic dance party, in Seattle last night.
In his phone call, Mullens told Thorne that after the rave they went to the house on Capitol Hill for a party. As the couple and their friend were preparing to leave, the gunman barged into the home, Mullens said.
Suzanne had gone back inside, possibly to get something, her mother said.
Mullens told Thorne he heard a lot of gunshots. He thought Suzanne was stuck somewhere in the house with the shooter between her and the door.
"She shouldn't have gone to the rave. I've never approved of those things," Thorne said. "The young kids just don't get it.
"I just hope to God she's alive," she said, crying. "And if she is, she's grounded for life."
Thorne said Mullens was one of a number of people police took to a precinct headquarters for questioning.
After being interviewed by police, one of that group, Garry Will, 20, of Bellevue, said he doesn't recall any arguments at the rave or at the house preceding the shooting.
He said the shooter had been at the house, left, then returned with several guns.
"Everybody was cool and chill and this guy showed up and started firing rounds out on the porch. He shot a guy and then came inside and started letting off rounds," Will said.
"He went in there trying to kill people, that's for sure. He wasn't going after just one person because he was letting off all these rounds."
Aaron Hoyle, 25, said the home was being rented by five of his friends, who shared a love of electronic music. Hoyle, who wasn't there when the shots were fired this morning, said the occupants frequently hosted parties.
Several neighbors of the home said they were awakened by gunfire.
"Our windows were like rattling from each one," Kayser said. "It's unbelievable how loud that was."
Charles Jackson, who lives two doors down from the home, said he was "just getting out of bed and I heard 'boom, boom.'."
"By the time I got out, there was one more shot fired," said Jackson, 67.
Jackson saw a man lying on a sidewalk who appeared to have been shot.
Neighbors say there has been a steady stream of young people with facial piercings, heavy makeup and multicolored hair coming and going from the house. Kayser said people were always hanging out on the porch and often said hello to passers-by.
William Lowe, who lives across the street from where the shootings occurred, called 911 when he heard four shotgun blasts and two shots from a small-caliber handgun around 7 a.m. He said he saw an injured man stumble outside the home.
"The first person I saw was obviously wounded, and he looked disoriented," said Lowe, 59.
He said he saw the gunman leave the house through a side door, carrying what looked like a sawed-off shotgun.
"The officer yelled 'drop your ' and the guy put the gun to his mouth and pulled the trigger," Lowe said.
Lowe said the gunman looked familiar and he thinks he may have visited the house before. He said that since people moved into the home nearly six months ago it was a regular party destination for youth.
Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels spent a portion of the morning surveying the neighborhood.
"Our thoughts are with the people at Harborview and with the victims of this senseless violence," Nickels said. "It's a terrible tragedy; we don't have incidents like this in this city very often."
Seattle Times staff reporters Ben Romano, Jennifer Sullivan, Sara Jean Green, Jack Broom, Mike Carter, Jonathan Martin, Maureen O'Hagan, Sonia Krishnan, Nick Perry, Justin Mayo and Christine Willmsen and news researcher Miyoko Wolf contributed to this report.

I am still stunned and disturbed by this and the way the Media handles it.
Drudge report basically blamed the victims He couldn't get off the fact that they dressed different from him and kept talking about the Goth movement, face makeup and the Party theme of "Better off Undead party" he never mentioned that the alcohol free dance party was a fund raiser for the local sheriff and women's shelter
Fox News announced the top story of the day as a Race Car driver killed!
Six innocent kids slaughtered two wounded for no logical reason seems to be the Top story to me. Not the death of a man who knew the risk’s of what he was doing!
And this has really opened my eyes to what a great non discriminating and accepting group these Ravers can be, I have never been to a Rave or taken "E" but after reading the Rave forums for information about this tragedy
I come away with a whole new respect for these young people that we tend to put down in this forum all the time...
They accept others for who they are, they accept the outcast kids with open arms, they take in fellow homeless, they watch out for each other, and they enjoy music and fellowship. They love their art, they raise money for pressing social issues, they are trying to change the future in positive ways, and they do not discriminate in fact there is some speculation that is what got them killed!
Talk of the madman being a white Nazi pissed off that boy's and girls were mixing regardless of ethnic background.
And the Rave motto I keep seeing is
PLUR
Peace, Love, Unity, and Respect
Seems to me the Burner community could learn something from the Ravers we so often put down in these forums.

Thats the media for you, when the IRA bombed Warrington (England) on March 19th 1993, killing a 3year and an 11 year old boy and injuring many others, the powers that be decided that the Queen Mother having a fish bone stuck in her throat was more important news. It's just a farce.Fox News announced the top story of the day as a Race Car driver killed

With all respect Sean. This sounds like more agenda based dis-information to me.Sean wrote:May god rest the souls of those who passed on.
The reports we are getting up here say that this was the result of MDMA use.
How can they blame any drug use on this! The guy loaded his truck up for War the night before? This was one jacked up nut with a gun he had multiple weapons and hundreds of rounds in his truck, he used a pistol grip shotgun and a pistol and was wearing bandoliers full of rounds. He had a history of violence including shooting a Moose in an art display!
And the use of MDMA tends to make one more loving the way I understand it...
I foresaw this coming next the gun control advocates will start pointing fingers.
Could you explain the reasoning behind this thought process?
One more point if you go to these links and read the community forums as I have this Raver community did not even know the guy some may of seen him hanging on the fringes of the community before at most..He was from Montana not a local raver and a bit older than most..

A local news article...
Popping Off: Why does the 'rave' aspect keep coming up?
By D. PARVAZ
P-I REPORTER
Let's break down Saturday morning's horrific events, shall we?
Several young people are in a Capitol Hill home, winding down from an electronic show/dance at the Capitol Hill Arts Center. Among the guests was 28-year-old Kyle Huff.
Reports indicate that Huff, for reasons only he could comprehend, left the house, returned a few minutes later, spray-painted "now" (possibly the shortest word with which to communicate a frantic sense of immediacy) outside the house before unleashing hell upon the people with whom he was only moments earlier hanging.
He killed six people and injured two. He then took his own life, and so far, any hope of getting any sort of explanation for what was going through his mind.
Now, of this chilling massacre, what is the one detail that keeps popping up in stories and conversations around town? That the victims (and possibly the killer) were at a "rave" on Friday night.
For one second, let's assume that they were. SO WHAT?
Are we really that obtuse? We hear that six innocent people died, that two others are hospitalized, that the killer himself is a sad example of a young mind gone horribly wrong, and the first thing we think about is, "Hmmm, what kind of music were they listening to the night they died?"
It's bad enough to paint an entire community as nefarious because some people take drugs at some parties (OK, fine, raves). But trying to somehow say that these kids were lesser, that they were bad kids and to maybe try to use them as a morality lesson to frighten other teens from going out to enjoy electronic music is nothing short of sick.
And to paint the after-party as something other than what it was is likewise misguided.
Haven't you ever been out to a bar or a concert with friends, and gone to a friend's house afterwards, because you weren't quite ready to call it a night? I know you have, and I have too. It's a nice alternative to going to Denny's, right?
But the party at the Capitol Hill Arts Center was hardly a rave – I wasn't there, but I've been to a number of events around town that I was later surprised to hear described by others as raves.
The "Better Off Undead" party was something like most events anywhere where DJs are the star attractions: Tickets are sold to a performance at a legit venue. People show up (in this case, in theme costumes, kinda like Halloween). They dance. They leave. Friday night's show was an all-ages, alcohol-free event. There wasn't even a whiff of some massive, underground event, which defined the rave scene of the '90s.
Were there drugs at Friday's show? I don't know. Probably. Attendees may have taken them before arriving, after leaving, or hell, maybe they didn't take anything at all. Are there drugs in malls, high schools, bars, buses and pretty much any place you'd find people?
Uh, yeah. But this, again, is totally irrelevant to what went down on Saturday morning at the Capitol Hill house.
It seems Huff had been stockpiling weapons in his Northgate apartment, and that he went out Friday night with at least two firearms and plenty of ammo with him. Are we really going to try to blame that on the electronic music scene or Ecstasy?
What about Dominick Maldonado, who in November went on a shooting spree in the Tacoma Mall, killing one and injuring six? What kind of music did he listen to?
Remember how conservative parenting groups tried to blame the Columbine school shooting on Marilyn Manson? It's always something. It used to be, what, hippie music? Then punk rock, then heavy metal, violence in TV shows, violent video games, then goths, then raves, maybe Britney Spears' navel or Christina Aguilera's "Dirrty" chaps. Or maybe it's rap music?
Come on.
The instinct to look for easy answers is a natural one. A healthy mind can't grasp what makes a person do what Huff did. Think about it. Locate target – a young, innocent person for whom life is sweet. Aim. Fire. Repeat time and time again. Finally, turn shotgun on self. Pull trigger. One. Last. Time.
Of course we want answers.
But trying to demonize a legitimate branch of the local artistic community is not the answer. Those kids – and their families – are victims who deserve our consideration and justice, no matter who the headlining DJ was the night before.

Like most suicides, the person involved is probably the only one who knows why.

"Everything is more wonderful when you do it with a car, don't you think?"

It would be a shame if I had to resort to self-deception to preserve my faith in objective reality.

Maybe there are just so many of us enjoying so many freedoms that it's simply the law of averages catching up to us.
Maybe some things happen.
Maybe there's no reason.
Maybe the expression "It's all good," will pass away as the vapid nonsense it is.
Maybe it's time to stop going to Burning Man and stay home with my children.

It ain't the hanging, it's the drop.

Greetings fellow community members,
Most of you already know all about our upcoming April Fool’s Party. I’m sure you’ve either got your costume all picked out or your frantically scrambling to come up with the wackiest thing you can think of. This e-mail is not to beg you to come to what will surely be an outstanding evening; this is an e-mail to beg you to bring extra money. Yes, I’m serious.
As you probably know, our community has suffered a tragedy this last weekend in which some of our neighbors were senselessly killed. In honor of those we’ve lost and in support of their grieving families and friends, we will join together and build a temple in their honor. Legendary artists and Burning Man Temple Builder David Best from San Francisco will be joining us in this effort. For a sample of his recent work, see attached pictures.
Our goal as the Boogie Universal ARTS Collective is to raise $1,000 of the $5,000 that is needed to make this a reality. Ignition NW, the Northwest Regional Burning Man organization, will match the first $1,000 raised—so if we can get that $1,000 together, we will actually contribute $2,000. If 50 people bring an extra $20 to donate, we will reach that goal. If 100 people bring an extra $10 we will reach that goal. If we all bring whatever we have to contribute, we will reach that goal.
Jeremy Ball has agreed to donate his latest C.D. to anyone that donates over $10 towards the cause, and will additionally contribute 90% of his C.D. sales.
If you have any fund-raising ideas or would like to make a donation, please contact me and/or bring your donations to the April Fool’s Party this Saturday.
Boogie Universal will also be donating a significant portion of our proceeds from this event to the Memorial Temple project.

If you can't make it to the April Fool's Party and would still like to make a donation, please contact me and I will direct you towards the latest information.
Community is an action. Let's do this.
With love,
Erik Moore

You don't hallucinate on E, and you don't get vicious like that. No, I'm sorry, this was a deeply-disturbed mind at work and drugs had little if anything to do with it. He did it because he was a hateful, fucked-up and cynical individual. There are fucked up people in this world.
He probably fomented in his mind the notion that he wanted to kill some "stupid Goth/raver kids." He figured that he might get away with it because most of society outside the scene disapproves of the rave culture. He had plenty of opportunity because the scene is very open and welcoming, there aren't a lot of defenses. He did it, and when the cops came for him with guns out, panicked and killed himself.

I was thinking the same and also took some thought to the” NOW" graffiti.diane o'thirst wrote:You don't hallucinate on E, and you don't get vicious like that. I think the guy thought he might spark some kind of revolution amongst "his brethren of like minds" that hold the same amounts of weapons to be used on "hippie, raver freaks from Burningman".
Nuts like this worry me and they seem like they are going to be coming out of the closet soon and more often because things are not going too well for them in the world today.
Just hope that everyone stays alert and careful.

Anyone blaming Drugs has an agenda and reading the cited threads I saw a long impassioned anti-gun speech these people are all promoting a agenda whether it be anti drugs or anti guns fact is the guy was a frigging nut and full of hate! my own guess is the very pretty blonde 15 year old hottie hanging with the asian kid pissed him off enough to finally do what he was thinking about doing for a long time!diane o'thirst wrote:You don't hallucinate on E, and you don't get vicious like that. The asshole went to the Alcohol free Dance party/Rave held earlier that night too and was apparently invited back to this house or at least heard about the after hour's party the speculation on the above cited forums was the 19 security guards at the dance made him re-think his plans it could of been much worse! And I agree with DVD that the words "NOW" had relevance possibly white surpremacist/nazi type crap!
And Diane I think your on the money the chickenshit was heading back to his truck when by luck a cop happened to be a block away when the call came in so he got cornered and popped himself which was the only good thing that day!

Well I am no doctor that's for sure but I could go with that as a possibility except for the facts he had a history of violence and a huge collection of weapons...so sustained drug use plus on the edge anyhow combined with a warped sense of right and wrong. But I do not think we will ever know exactly what was in the fuck's head or why! or what caused it.Sean wrote:From the sounds of this guy he probably had some other disorder. Could E have magnified this and caused him to commit this crime?
