Glow in the dark paint..any one tried this stuff? The site says it burns just slightly less bright than a glow stick and will last 20 years :shock:. Obviously wouldnt do much for the camp underneath the tarps but might make for an interesting land mark if the top of the tarps were painted.

I painted heiroglyphs in glow paint on our mutant vehicle a couple years ago (it was the Egyptian Solar Barque). It was nice in that during the day, it was virtually invisible and then at night we'd have these ghostly glowing heiroglyphs along the gunwale and rails.

But there's the kicker: they didn't glow very brightly, and I put three to five layers on. It was a very diffuse light. Good for impressionism, not so good for definition.

Gow in the dark paint varies quite a bit. The craft stuff is scarcely visible aqfter an hour or so, the industrial stuff kicks ass. Price, that's a good first indicator. I can't afford the industrial stuff, but I lust after it.

I have some spray GID paint that's pretty good; the liquid acrylics are mostly for highlights. Perfect under blacklight however.

Has anyone seen the type of candle lantern that has a rotating shade around it? Im thinking it might look good at night inside my 10x10 caport thingie. Ive seen em before, but i cant find em on a internet search.

Anti-M: I got my glow-paint from a home improvement store, it was latex-based. Does that count as industrial? It definitely wasn't craft paint. Probably for stenciling stars on your ceiling as a faux paint treatment — nice effect, since it dries invisible, and then the lights go off and you have a ceiling full of stars...*Sigh*...wish I didn't live in an apartment...

I use Scribbles GID 3D paint on some of my crafts and it holds a charge and throws it back awesomely! But that's just it, it's crafts paint and not good for covering large amounts of material...might be good for beautiful, surgically-artistic detail on an article of clothing. Imagine an otherwise-plain silk robe or sarong with a glow-in-the-dark filigree pattern! Wouldn't use it for body paint, though, it takes 18 hours to set up.

The home improvement stuff is still closer to craft paint than industrial. I'll have to rustle up someof the links to show what I mean.

You'd love my bedroom ceiling, plastic GID stars and such in a long tapered stream above the bed.

These are plastic stars stuck up with dollhouse hold-wax. I have a net on my canopy bed because the stars freak me out when they let loose and fall on me at night.

Don't know about UV LED's, but I know you can get cold cathodes in UV (blacklight).

Anything under 400nm will work.

Google UV LED and you will find many retailers.

These are relatively safe but I would not look directly into the LED while it is active.

There are also 375 nm UV LEDs used for dental applications but those are generally unsafe since you cannot see any light comming out of them when they are active. The dental tools usually add a second blue LED in series to the UV LED just to give it the visibile light. These will fry a retina over-easy fast so avoid the lower wavelenghts.

Spotted yesterday:

Alsto's catalog has solar-powered lightstrings! Forget the Wagon o' Batteries™ and inverter, invest in a couple strings of this.

The 35' string (10,000 hours LEDs) is $90, but compare that to the cost of a battery array, inverter and generator to recharge day after day after day after day after... The lightstring has a solar panel already attached and the recharging device makes a toll-free, pollution-free pass overhead every day. Payload lightened, one less thing to trip over in the dark. A 35' string is more than enough for the average dome tent or tipi, comes up a little short for a geodesic dome or yurt. On at dusk, light for 8 hours.

They also have a 70' string for $150 but CoolLightWest has 100,000-hour LED lightstrings for $125. They also have solar battery chargers for $20.

But that's just one. I saw packages of three at HD a couple days ago for $39, which breaks down to $13 each.

Alsto's has a two-pack of stained glass ones for about the same price.

I'm passing on the tiki torches and planning on bringing my solar pagoda and a GITD gazing globe instead.

Thanks, Token. I did some reading on the wavelengths. Pays to be careful. 395 seems to be a safe bet, and I will mount them in such a way as to only provide reflective light off of UV painted surfaces within the creature's mouth. Cheers!

NOTE: it always works best to paint in on a WHITE substrate. Many of these paints don't glow very brightly (but some of them will glow up to 100 hours on a single "charge") and will be harder to see the darker the substrate behind them.

This place has real industrial glow paints designed for no-light signage and exit marking. They have both oil and water based and, I believe, sell the concentrated pigments so you can mix your own glow paint.

One of the coolest things is glow in the dark rope. Might be cool for tent guys:

I've tried glow in the dark rope from some other place (maybe OSH), and it doesn't work at all. I don't know if this company's strontium-based paint works better than whatever I had.

No, not the stick-on kind, the real kind. I first heard about GITD tattoo ink back in the '90s but my artist told me it's based on phosphorus and is metabolized by the body, so after a few years you have no glow. Apparently the technology changed over the past ten years.

I just ordered some 12v CCFLs (4 inverters running two 12" CCFLs each, in UV,green,purple and blue) from vibelight.com. I'm hoping to run these off various 12v sealed lead acid batteries I found recently at NPS in Utah, an industrial salvage type place, for $.70/lb. So that's around $4 for my 7ah 12v batteries and $9 for my 18ah batteries. I got enough matching batteries to build two arrays, 6x 8ah 12v for a total of 36ah 12v and 2x 18ah. The batteries were in original packaging amazing enough. Anybody know how many watts these pull at 12v?

Apparently CCFLs can get up to 80 lumens per watt?!?! Compared to 23 lumens per watt for LEDs?! That's making me hope I can run many CCFLs off my cheap batteries.

Gotta light up my wedding somehow, and it's my first year (I have run a large theme camp at a regional, lets hope it helps)... So I have a lot to plan :)

Has anybody seen good deals on an inverter/charger or on a cheap 50amp charger? Guess I should take it to the deep cycle thread.

Damn, that's gonna be one pretty wedding. Those colors will look great with ccfl's. I'm using the same batteries on Mantis and with two of the 7.5 Ah she should be up and glowing for a few hours at a time.
