How To Make Burning Man More Dangerous

Post by SED » Sat Apr 01, 2006 10:59 am

The idea is that we create new events and activities which will dramatically increase the hazards of Burning Man, without breaking any of the existing rules. Indeed, concepts should be arranged around the goal making safety rules impossible to design and apply.

The best example yet has been the Scissors Race.

My first humble offering is thus:

Hot Bocci

Contestants play the game of Bocci using iron balls in place of the traditional plastic or marble.

When a player loses a point or a round, or is subject to any penalty, his/her balls are place on a glowing hot hibachi for a set length of time. They are then required to continue play without the aid of gloves.
It ain't the hanging, it's the drop.

At this early stage of development, the Hot Bocci court will likley be adjacent to the Wind Pissing arena.

Oh this is too easy ... lots of things come to mind ... Guy Wire Maze where participants must negotiate a course at night on bicycles through a course of poles and guy wires.

T-Stake minesweeper (or, she does the t-stake boogie) . Participants race through an area studded with sawn off t-stakes painted beige and of heights varying from 2 inches to 14 inches from the playa surface. First one across the finish is the provisional winner. The condition of participants is checked and people finishing with wounds are move up one position for each separate wound. Prize is a ride to the med tent and a course of Keflex.

Catch THIS! Participants attempt to catch balls thrown by pitching machine at it's fastest setting. Participants may not use a glove. Person catching most consecutive balls wins.

Pin the tail on, uhm, something! Participant is dressed in black, blindfolded, and sent off in some random direction at night across the playa with a "tail" having a tack through it. First one to tack their tail on something gets points. More points for pinning something living. More points for "pinning" a moving art car.

I could go on, but what's the use?

I just got word from the Iron Rose head whippencracker, The Great Scissors Relay will be an officially scheduled event and our camp will be happy to actually do it. Anyone else wishing to participate/organize/protest/ignore the event is invited. We also have the 2nd Annual Drunken Miner Pub Crawl but we haven't set a date yet but if you know of a camp bar that serves miners, let us know and we will check it out.

I think the solution to this question is relativly simple.
With just a little bit more patience and understanding from all participants, I think BM 06' may have the potential to possibly be one of the most dangerous years yet! It just takes teamwork. One person alone can only cause a certain amount of dangerous, reasonable damage. But as a whole, the thought could be multiplied many times over---creating a perfectily disasterous community for everyone to enjoy! Here are a few guidelines one may want to follow for a truly incompetent time:
CAMPING:
Please make sure not to mark any exposed rebar, guylines, or other large obstructive objects. This helps others in the night have a good trip.
Also, make sure most of the cords and/or cables in use at your structure are frayed, and if possible, by open containers of flammable liquid. This will increase the chance that just about anyone will be able to start a mild to severe grade open playa fire.
PERSONAL: While walking at night, make sure not to wear any illuminescent clothing or objects. This will steer art cars right towards you! Also, it's probably a good idea to zigzag randomly through person's camps, and if time permits, rummage through their vehicles and zipped tents. Everyone enjoys a "hello!" now and again, even from strangers at 3 A.M.!
These are just a few tips & tricks on how to have a truly injuring time. Alas, be creative. Nobody want's to stand by on the sidelines. PARTICIPATE! Anarchy is best served when all willing members can just drop their facades and free-will and go "Hey, lets break it!"

There are some interesting foot traps powered by your own weight.
Place over hole. Insert foot.

Rebar playground.

Fishhook Streamerland.

(Fishhooks are very good for night thieves. Just remember to fasten the end to something not portable.) And don't forget where they are. Use the triple barb.

Now that borders on sadistic and makes me cringe just thinking about it. OUCH!!!!

Everyone wears a holster with a realistic looking toy gun. Anytime someone is stopped by law enforcement, they reach quickly for their toy gun.

How about tent races? Participants erect identical pop-up tents without staking and wait on the start line for the wind to pick up.

First tent to arrive in Pahrump wins.

Something my camp has been proposing for quite some time:

Kamp rebar death maze!
One long, poorly illuminated tent filled with rebar sticking out in every possible direction. Four fog machines running simultaneously for that extra kick of vision obstruction. Extremely loud crappy trance music blared from the end of the structure, and outside, a sign that says "Free Ecstasy."

Nice thought, Samdu, but it doesn't fit the bill. There are already rules against fire arms. Besides, I think the spirit should be that any harm done should be entirely self-inflicted, or at least avoidable.

Random pill roulette might work though. After trolling the playa for gift drugs, the catch is placed in a bag and folks reach in and blindly select a pill or tablet, then swallow it down. The roulette wheel determines how many pills must be swallowed.

Random quantities of random shots at random times with random substances in random groups of people. No firearms necessary, and it's self-inflicted. (Was that Vodka, M.E.K., Gin, or Acetone I just drank??)
