Kiwis!
I've heard rumours about people bumping into New Zealanders at Burning Man... I've been both 2002 and 2003 and plan to keep going! It would be lovely to meet others who've been too and remind me of Burning Man while I'm at home

there is a great NZ rep!
And his name is Mark. We met him last year at our anniversary cocktail party with his wife and son. They've been to 6 burns! You can contact him at
Best of luck,

I think we met them in kids-camp last year (they used to live in Reno right?) - turned out I'd met him out on the playa 10 years before (not at BM).burnin' steph wrote:And his name is Mark. We met him last year at our anniversary cocktail party with his wife and son.
We're kiwis too - I go with my wife (who spent her teenage years in NZ and while she's technically american counts as one) and 2 kids and a whole bunch of Aussies ('Moonbase' out around Faith/2:30). One of whom probably travelled furthest to BM than anyone (flew to Honolulu, back to Sydney, LAX, SFO).
We also met another kiwi who lives in Atlanta - he was easy to find - he was flying a flag with a kiwi on it.
We had a 'southern-style barbie' and invited him ... hanburgers with beetroot and pineapple. The Aussies made lamingtons ... well virtual ones they forgot the coconut so you had to imagine it. And I made hokey-pokey (always a great applied chemistry experiment for the masses).

OK - try this 5 table spoons of sugar and 2 of golden syrup (it's treacly stuff look in your local high end supermarket). Mix it in a pot and put it on the stove, stir it until it comes to the boil (make sure it doesn't burn - keep stirring for about 4 minutes.electrolux wrote:That sounds pretty obscene. I knew kiwis were already pretty weird (you know, the whole sheep thing), but this takes it up a notch.
Now comes the fun part (call the kids or local geeks over - our camp had lots of both) - add 1 teaspoon of baking soda - fwoosh it all foams up. Pour it into a well greased pan and drop it the fridge (chilly bin/eski/cooler whathaveyou on the playa) before it get's really hard score it.
The result is biege coloured goop that looks like one of those 2 part insulations that expands to fix the walls - it's basicly pure sugar (the syrup adds a little flavour).
At my kids school in the US they have a diversity day when everyone brought stuff from their own culture - we brought HP - the first year no one would touch it - it looked so wierd (except for our kids) - the next year we actually had a kiwi teaching at the school and he made a big deal of trying it - all his pupils did too and since then it's been a big hit.
I did once find Hokey Pokey icecream in the US - in a local high end suopermarket (Andronicos) - made in, of all places, Invercargill

lamingtons!!??!!!
I don't think you could call those disgraceful things lamingtons!!
I was lucky enough to be invited to the BBQ out at moonbase after bumping into a camp member out on the playa who had actually been on my flight over.

well I said they were 'virtual 'ones - you had to dunk them yourself then imagine the coconut .....redstar wrote:I was lucky enough to be invited to the BBQ out at moonbase after bumping into a camp member out on the playa who had actually been on my flight over.
Well - most of us live here - the few that actually come from Oz do indeed fly here the week before - but I agree logistics are hard - we have a bunch of Aussies (and kiwis and 'merkins) who camp together, rent a truck, buy food in bulk etc etc About 1/2 of us are actually from the SF Bay Area along with a NY contingent as well.DingoJones wrote:Dude, I've been a fan of The Burn for years, but have always thought the logistics of getting there where to great...
it comes a great shock to find that Aussie's have been going for years...
I'm desperate, how did you do it....
tell me all...

Black Rock Desert is 2 hours or so North of Reno. Around 6 hours from San Francisco. Los Angles is 10 - 12 hours.
Reno has everything you need & cheap hotels & buffets. The website has details. San Francisco can be extremely expensive unless you have friends & advise.
I drive from LA but now do most of my food & last minute shopping in Reno.
I have an Aussi friend who joined me in LA & drove out with me. I've had people who were merely friends of friends fly to Reno from london, rent a car, buy a small tent & bike & supplies - and find us out on the playa with a few directions & never having met us before. I see them every year out there now.
It ain't easy - but not because the welcome mat isn't out.
But your local burners can probably give you better advice.

ps - what about renting one big container to advance ship like the new york burners did? could that make shipping gear & art worth while?

well Pets said it well - chances are these days you will be flying into LAX anyway - but driving from there is a really hard drive - from SF it's a comfortable days drive (I do it 4-5 times a year) - leave early to avoid the traffic (7am) and you'll be at BRC by mid afternoon.DingoJones wrote:any advise you could give a guy from Oz thinking about making an attempt to get there next year?...is the SF Bay Area the closest mass populus to the playa?...I always thought it would of been closer to LA?...
On the other hand you're probably flying into LAX - flying on to Reno probably doesn't cost much more than SF - I hear there's something of an informal 'international hostel' run there - people may put you up and you may be able to arrange a ride or car pool out to the playa.
However that's just the mechanics of getting there - you need infrastructure - water, tents, food, stuff in general - don't try and go all minimalist - it's a harsh environment, if you forget something you can't buy it there - imagine you are going to drive half way from Brisbane to Alice and camp 100 miloes off of the road.
You're going to be there for a week or so and you want to be comfortable. The idea after all is to have a good time
Not even informal, I spent a week and a half helping Hagy(the Hostel master) Take people all over Reno to shop. The International Burner Hostel(google it) works very well, Fred had 250 people stay at the Hostel for at least 1 night and over 350 people show up to give rides.Taniwha wrote:

When you decide to go look at the Web page and e-mail Fred, to get started. Most burners showed up with a backpack and a bag, just personal gear. If you are with a camp, or camping with the hostel, it works well, if you are alone, it will cost more. The people I took around bought food water and usually lotion etc. very few needed to buy major stuff. I know of one that bought tent, cooler, everything and has paid a local to store that stuff. Not a bad plan if you are coming back

No Shit! Where are the Burners in New Zealand?
I'm actually from LA but have been living in Wellington since June. I love it here & Kiwis are so laid-back....but where's the passion? A 2-time Burner myself, I'd LOVE to sniff out the counter-culture here. Does it exist? Help!

There's a really big goth scene in Welly if you're into that, otherwise I'm not sure! You should come to Alpine Unity (http://www.alpineunity.com)!!

heh - one of the funniest things I ever remember is Rainbow Valley's new years party maybe 25 years back - up in the hills above Golden Bay (are they still there?) we had a bunch for friends there who were originally from Waitati (near Dunedin where we lived).kyla wrote:There's a really big goth scene in Welly
Anyway that year it drew a whole bunch of punks from Wellington - definitely proto-goth - white and pasty-faced, never seen the sun - I've never seen so many sunburned people in one place in my life - and all so repressed about taking of their clothes and jumping in the river (well the sandflies there are evil but not in the water)

Belated Hi from the NEW ZEALAND REGIONAL
Hi there you kiwi burners!
Sorry to take so long to dial into this site. I have only really got my feet back on the ground in NZ recently after being over in the USA for a couple of months. I am the NZ regional contact () and have jsut been to my 7th burn. I used to live in Reno (1993-98) so got there easily for a long time. Now I get there when my work over there allows me to be there at the right time. Thats worked out so far in 2000, 2001 and 2002. I am in Wellington region. Am hoping to do a burn of some kind at Visionz festival in Nelson area over New Years if I can find other Burners or Burn friendly people. How about any of you out there?? Keen to join me. Anyway, from now on I will keep an eye on this site now I know there are some kiwi burners out there.
If any of you are friends with actiongrl then let me know. She said she had a kiwi friend who wanted to help me out with the regional activities. I have suffered from lack of critical mass for a few years, so now I am excited that there are actually kiwi people in NZ on e-playa.
Again sorry for the slackness in gettingback onto the e-playa - Kyla - will go into my email and look for your messages. I assume you are the friend of actiongrl?
See you

Yay!!!
Yonder Man!!!!! You DO exist!! Hehe...

Hi kiwi burners!!
Hi there Kyla, Taniwha, Eva and other kiwi Burners!!!
This is so so good - New Zealand burners!! Yay!! Critical mass is developing. Kyla - have just sent you a message trying to convince you to go to Visionz rather than Alpine Unity at New Years so we can do a BM event there together. Eva - you live in Wellington and are in dire need of counter cultural activities. We therefore HAVE to get together as we live in the same city (actually Upper Hutt, but thats considers part of greater wellington). I have done quite a lot of sniff this sort of activity out. It is more difficult due to the more reserved nature of kiwis, but its still there. Maybe I could convince you to go to Visionz at New Years as well to participate in the regional event. Taniwha - so good to hear from you again. Remember you well. Wish you lived over here as well. I didn't realise Taniwha was your handle. That was the basis of our 2002 costumes. Cool! We need to get together at the next burn. I missed you at BM2003.
To ANYONE out there in kiwiland who has been or wants to go to Burning Man, please get in touch on this site or via . In particular, please give thought to coming to Visionz (www.visionz.org) in Goldern Bay for New Years. We will organise some sort of Burning Man camp there. Please get in touch anyway.

Re: Hi kiwi burners!!
thx - actually sometime just after next year's burn we're packing up the whole family (after 20 years in the US) and moving back to NZ so who knows we may run into you in a year or so. I've been 'Taniwha' online since the mid 80's back when there were very few kiwis on the net - nowdays people keep offering me money for my domain (some silly rugby team somewhere ....)Yonder Burn wrote:Taniwha - so good to hear from you again. Ryabird et al - ALL WELCOME!!
Hi there Ryabird!!
Great to hear from you and read that you are going to be in New Burningland will be able to come to Visionz. My ideas take shape as the days pass by - A man will be on display at the event and will be burned either on the New Years eve or the next night. It won't be the huge real thing, but will be worthy of a look. I will email you with some details of NZ stuff. YOu would be welcome to come and hook up with us in Wellington region as well (that goes for any burners out there - wish we were gonna be round for Kylas visit this weekend - Labour Wkend).

visions of light
Yonder Burn - I would love to help put something together for the new year. I work for a fireworks (and other stuff) company so I could help rig the man to BURN. I also know a guy who does flame sculpture and I have access to any number of tools and volunteers! I think I can find a few spinners too. They are OK'ish.
I am really keen to put an installation together for Visions, it would be a warm up for bringing one to BM04. I keep seeing ideas that I want to try. Just yesterday I saw one in a reflection in a lake. the light was reflecting off the water and flowing up the branches of a tree. Its hard to explain what it looked like but It would look enchanting at night. I'm also plan to build some low temperature (low'ish) fireworks to put on my firestaff. I have tried this once before (with HIGH TEMP fireworks) and it was quite a rush! Do you know any spinners that might be interested in trying this? I could build some quite safe hanabi (Japanese SOFT flame)
I'm keen to hear any ideas you have!
he who has smelt the smoke is never again free!
- no not that smoke!

Visionz burn !!
Wow - that all sounds fantastic RB! I will this week put the idea to the Visionz people and take chunks outa your message to make up an event to propose to them. They are going to agree to something that will please us and get the message out to others. Wonder how we could get the message out re participation to other Visionz people? There is not a Visionz discussion group yet from what I can tell.
I think we will have to limit the height of our BM to something less than 20 ft or the organisers will get nervous about outa control fires near the forest. Doing the burn right by the tribal zone would be most appropriate. I will get back to you/the thread when I have exchanged emails with the Visionz people.
Hope you all had a good Labour Weekend - how was the Wellington weekend Kyla?? I zoned out in some outa the way natural hotsprings to the north of Taupo.
