Wireless Phone Service

BRCellular Launches Wireless Phone Service...

Black Rock City, NV --- Amidst rampant media speculation, BRCellular today announced it will provide Wireless Phone Service to the annual festival known as Burning Man, scheduled for August 28 - September 4, 2006.

BRCellular, a 4 year old company, has just finished construction on its new Data Center and Corporate Headquarters, in the fast growing town of Black Rock City, NV. The town's central location to its Western Operations and its new partnership with BMORG made this site a easy choice.

I am a little distressed. I haven't been to Burning Man yet, but I was previously led to believe there would be no commerce on the playa. Something about the word 'decommodification'. As well, this leads me to believe that the principle of radical self-reliance isn't being upheld here.

Please tell me that this is a joke, or that I am misunderstanding.

Please.

Are you sure about that? Maybe BRCellular can be called into question but there are companies out there vying for UPRR's business....and as part of that the subject of a tower in Gerlach has been discussed. That is an absolute fact.

Most Excellent!! I've signed up Camp Palomino for both a kiosk and advertising and am greedily counting the profit-soon-to-be and ordering a new Prevost for me and my homies.

Got me. Definitely. But it should say something about how fragile an idea can be in someone's mind.

Post by iunones » Mon Apr 03, 2006 9:52 pm

I think the big deal was the kiosks. The branding of BRC and BMOrg to create a 'commodity'. Not necessarily the use of cell phones on the playa. But since it was an April Fool's joke, it really isn't a big deal. So let us all go forth and worry on this no more!

Light and love,

Another good way is to boost the power of your phone we just pull the battery out and hook up jumper cables up to the little gold battery connectors if you run the idle up you can get a great connection...

Hunter S - as I stated in my first post - I haven't been to the playa yet. So no...I didn't try my cell phone there. I hope to go this year, and will keep that tidbit of info in mind in case I need to use my phone.

Rockdad - thanks for the suggestion - I'll try not to blow up the battery while attempting that maneuver.

You want guaranteed phone service? Rent a satphone for the 2 weeks.

Piece of cake. Guaranteed to work.

Otherwise there are nexuses out there where you *can* hit a tower. Helps if you have your own tower and amp setup. Where? Classified info, sorry.

Get a ham radio license and communicate that way.

Or do without. >grins<

I'll post this for informational purposes only, I don't endorse the site, don't have any ties to it whatsoever...it's simply a link to a commercial product or two that someone with a little electrical engineering background might be able to duplicate.

http://www.wpsantennas.com/

Again YMMV, don't ask me no questions and when it comes to cell phones I'll tell you no lies. All disclaimers apply, batteries not included. If it fails to work I had nothing to do with it, yada, yada, yada.

I opt for doing without, personally. Which is where all this started I think. I guess that my ideas of radical self reliance just doesn't include cell phones. Walkie talkies rock though. Do they work well on the playa?
