"The Bar" Playa Structure Building Discussion
In the environmental stipulations BMORG has premission for postholes they cannot be all that bad? notice in there though that the water table is around 5 feet though..After all the rain this year might be higher even?

No, you can't go deep enough to support the pole adequately - and even then you *will* leave a nasty scar.Rockdad wrote:Also couldn't we just bring a post hole digger and a length of 2" pipe? no top support needed.
They do not really like post holes but if we backfill carefully with water and tamping should not be a problem...
I wish I knew *why* the top support idea won't work... I mean, there's gotta be a reason, right??

Putting enviroment and BMORG aside just strickly engineering with a post hole digger you can go a little more than three feet deep that should be way strong enough. Hell I have a hard time getting my rebar out from two feet deep? is it that the soil(thats a stretch) substance will just breakout with side torque? someone must of tried this out there before..out here where I am it would hold a truck swinging..Bay Bridge Sue wrote:No, you can't go deep enough to support the pole adequately - and even then you *will* leave a nasty scar.Rockdad wrote:Also couldn't we just bring a post hole digger and a length of 2" pipe? no top support needed.

mmmmm
Much easier than I was thinking.....
I was working on top support, but an elevated platform would be easier and reduce the re-enforcement requirements of the top....Thanks, all...
back to pencil and paper......

actually I think a guyed pole will work, howver the anchors have to be first rate and the guy wires have like zero stretch. After all radio towers have guy wires. Our tent @ EspressoCamp has a guyed center pole and we can do some stuff on it. The guy "wires" are rope and are not very tight. We have double backed (one behind the other) stakes and they move some. Also think about sail boat masts that are guyed. They generate thaousands of foot-pounds of torque trying to tip the boat over. Look at a 60 foot mast offset by 15 guys on the rail and 5000 - 15000 pound in the keel.Bay Bridge Sue wrote:No, you can't go deep enough to support the pole adequately - and even then you *will* leave a nasty scar.Rockdad wrote:Also couldn't we just bring a post hole digger and a length of 2" pipe? no top support needed.

I think the main point is to not use a "normal" tent pole and guy system for the "party pole"

This is probably the simplest route if you're gonna build it yourself, but I like the freestanding one. I remember someone brought one of those to a sparkclub at the BM office.dragonfly Jafe wrote:
If you're determined to use a guy system, those are easy to work with too, and with some turnbuckles can be kept taut all week.

Yea, would secure it good.... Maybe, just don't like tripping over wires, especially around a bar. I think a combo of the elevated platform and a semi-secure top(at least not as enforced as i was thinking) might work well.

This bar has the flavour of Callahan's Crosstime Saloon - any Spider Robinson fans out there? (wait... is Spider Robinson himself out there??)
I'm already VCamping elsewhere, but I'll be happy to come by and wipe bartops or something...
.. and suggestion for maximizing candle-power: add shiny surfaces for reflected light! (okay, mirror = glass, so that's out... mylar = flammable, so that's no good... anyone got a big long shiny chunk o' chrome that might make a good backdrop for a stretch of candles?)

I think Zoom and I will be at our little special camp. However, like X, we would like to volunteer our services and donate goodies. With this being Zoom's first time, I want to make sure he experiences many things as well as be a part of a great group of friends. Heck, you can even stop by our camp for munchies or whatnot.
