Favorite Tool

Post by Mister Jellyfish Mister » Mon Apr 17, 2006 6:43 pm

What's your favorite tool? Mine used to be my automatic wire strippers. They're still great for el wire but I currently experience a higher degree of relish when I reach for the small wire cutters called a "nibbler". Every time I do so I say out loud "The Nibbler" as though it is the name of a secret evil nemesis super power. Kind of like an old radio play... think "The Shadow Knows". Then I make a deep, throaty chuckle while snipping off something critical.

Anybody else talking to their tools or am I the only normal one?

Favorite Tool,... and your not taking about a body part here,.... I think my cordless drill, though I don’t talk to it unless the battery goes flat in the middle of an operation,... and it’s not exactly talking.

Gee, Can I have your wire striper?

I have a scrolling jigsaw that I love.

I also love my magnified goggles. I couldn't do anything without that sucker, because I couldn't see anything well enough to work accurately.

I'd have said "My Rotozip" but the damn bits break constantly. I wish they'd machined the collet and bit shanks to be hexagons and make the bits out of titanium or brass so they wouldn't spin in the collet and smoke the bit. Basically I do what I can with the scrolling saw and get into the really tight little turns (like nostril undercuts, jaw and tail-lash radii and between paw digits) with the spiral saw.

What kind of turn-radius is on the Sawzall? Can I do 1/2" to 1/4" scrolls with it?

If I decide on favorite status based on use, it's my pocket knife. I use it every day for something.

I carry a little tiny micro-multi tool with pliers and two sizes of philips and flat-head screw drivers that gets used frequently, too, but the knife is what I use most often.

Unless I want to consider my Mac my tool.

I love Tool, Can't wait for the new CD!

Post by XS » Tue Apr 18, 2006 10:19 am

Yes. Absolutely... TOOL's my favorite band too. Can't wait for the new CD to drop, yo...

But out on the Playa, I'm lovin' my leatherman. sort of a swiss army type of multi-tool... pliers, knife blade, can & bottle opener, all kinds of functionality.

But who can live without a..... SLEDGEHAMMER!?!

I love Peter Gabriel too.

My pony oxy/acetylene set-up... I can cut, weld, and burn the shit outta stuff with it. Plus, when I was smoking, I could light cigs with it. And it's small enough to take with me. And we won't mention making fun stuff with Acetylene and plastic lawn garbage bags...

If you're doing woodwork...... it would have to be my low angle block plane. With one of these babies you can plane across knots, end grain and against the grain without tearing out chunks. Oh yes and my old fashioned hand crank drill and a hand full of bits. A drill like this is great on the Playa, no power required!

A 12 pounder is a little heavy for me - think I'll stick with my 8# whackomatic. Of course, that 3#"engineer's" bung plug hammer works wonders, too...

OH!!!

I'm sorry - I thought you were speaking of "people" tools... <grins>

Ooo, this is a tough one.

I love tools, they excite me.

But I'd have to say that my favorite tool is a pencil.

I tend to really like my "squeeze-driver" which is like a cordless screwdriver operated by squeeze-action. It also acts as a ratchet for high torque.

Sawzall is right up there for usefulness.

Can we call GOOP a tool? 'Cuz I loves it.

And my power shear. (Built on a Milwaukee drill body, with a two-on-one beak that VERY neatly removes about 3/16" of thick aluminum, or plastic, or....)

Swiss Army Knife. ("Super Tinker". good pliers, but I REALLY use.....the toothpick. *sigh*.)

Black Sharpie marker.

Any of my vast collection of 'biners. (And I don't climb!)
