Blue - wanna talk costumes? Tell me what works, what doesn't work, what seems like it would be a good idea but you or someone else tried it and it didn't work.. I need to start planning my wardrobe :)

I'm good.. got more sticky waxed hair, still more to go but it is getting there.... had mexi-fries as part of my lunch (special treat, num!) and my friend the massage therapist ripped up my shoulder and made it somewhat better, though it is still lacking full functionality.

You?

<squeeeeeze for Koosh> Hate it when that happens.. I've got decent relationships with most of my exs, and horrible or nonexistant ones with the rest. No middle ground, unfortunately.

DD, what's an "Order"?

Well, First-(BIIIIG hug for Koosh)

Okay, I co-own a convenience store, and tomorrow is when two of my orders go out, so I have to make them up tonight. Y'know, cat litter, candy, beer, cigarettes, ammo, etc.

I actually have really good relationships with the exes I still see socially. This one's just still a relatively fresh breakup (okay, a year and a half, but after five years one doesn't normally just walk away and say "What's next?"), and I haven't yet figured out how to be supportive of him without devolving into "But I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE you!!!!!!!!1111111111!!!twelvety!"

My best and longest friend (16 years now... prob for most of the first 8 we were lovers as well as friends) did a really good loving job of setting boundaries as a friend when we stopped that particular aspect of relating... a year or two of angst while we readjusted the way we related, but it was well worth it.

Have you discussed being able to say that you love him/her, without it meaning "still in love"?

Hello Xta_G. It's been a long/fun/great day today, just coming down to a stop. Xta, is Shoegirl your friend? My friend MellotronG has posted in here a couple of times, and we live in the same town (La Grande). She is a saint...(and a damn fine musician) :)

Oh, I had a tent question today... I know all about rebar stakes, and no mesh, and shade other than just a tent fly....

But... how bad are fibreglass tent poles? If you have a well-staked tent, so it doesn't actually blow Up/Off/Away, will the poles still somehow be broken?

I've got two offers for loaned tents (yay Dad and non-BM-bound friend) and need to decide who I'm more willing to risk breaking tent poles on... :)

Most of 'em are, and yes they break. OK, here's one of the things that can happen. Couple years ago, on Tuesday after, we had a HUGE dust storm. I'd used these rubber trout as stake covers, I guess they were 6-7'' and most of them were no longer visible. At all. Snapped one of my poles that year, had a nice tent, too.

I'd have to be sure it was true before I tried. *sigh* We were both still in love when we broke up, and I'm reasonably certain he still loves me (we traded "I love you"s on Burn Night last year). But staying together was NOT healthy for us any longer. So there's baggage, and Issues, and all kinds of stuff.

He's had some rough stuff happen over the last few months, and I was trying to convey to him tonight that I still felt the desire to support him after all he'd given me over the years we were together, and that telling me to "pay it forward" (which I'll also do, make no mistake) wasn't going to change that. And that made him uncomfortable.

I think I'm trying to skip over the "awkward exes" phase and go directly to "old, dear, trusted friends" - and just making it more awkward in the process. :-P

I'm a Heinlien fan... and his definition (used by.. hm.. Lazarus Long? Or someone talking to him? Jubal Harshaw?) of love was along the lines of "if their happiness is critical to yours..." So, I like that. If someone is close enough to me that I would be unable to be happy myself if they were in pain/sorrow/suffering and I could not brush that aside.. that's love.

Rebuilding stuff is HARD... and it sounds like what you did tonight is one of those awkward experiences that happens in the middle zone, during the process of figuring out whether or not there is enough value to put the PAINFUL effort in to getting through the crap to the good stuff. Visiting my ex and his wife is now one of the things I look forward to every year.. they are the out-of-town location I can go to crash, recover, or launch myself off to a new adventure (cheaper to fly out of Seattle than Vancouver most times, so they are the starting point for most of my journeys..)

Oh, and back to the tent thing... so... what do people do about tent poles? Use fibreglass and bring extras? Splurge on stainless? Do something else? Rely on seeing the wind storm coming and having time to dash back to camp to drop the tent? (does it survive in deflated mode better than set-up? Would just dropping the posts whenever I left during the day be any help? Do wind storms only happen during the day? - those were all things my nonBM friend thought might work, or was questioning..)

A good tent should survive fine...The problem is with tent stakes you need real long tent stakes most people use Rebar about three feet long bent over like a candy cane. I use three footers with a big nut welded on the end for pounding in.

Your extra shade can be designed to protect your tent from some of the wind. Make sure you have your shade to the ground on the south side and support it with T-stakes if possible.

I find my homemade 1' stakes work fine, I just drive them all the way into the ground.
