Who Made the crane-Flower car!?
Who Made the crane-Flower car!?
it lit up at night, had a garden platform.. i walked beside it on the way out to the man the night he burned... The music and the ambient light from it were the most beautiful thing i saw at burning man. What music did you play that night if you remember? i have to get it... but anyways... whoever made that, thank you so much and it was my most memorable experience!!
L.A. outfit The Do Lab.

Yeah, beholding that flower for the first time pretty much sealed the deal for me in 2005.

Oh, thank god.
They're a commercial outfit!
I thought that some guys pulled it together on weekends, out of their own pockets and 'scraps' they had laying about. It raised the bar pretty dramatically. It makes a lot more sense knowing that they do such things for a living, and pretty successfully, judging from their list of clients.
It was gorgeous, that's for sure!!
Good for them!

Umm, not really
"Miracle Grow" was a collaborative effort between many artists from a Los Angeles art community. They are not a commercial entity in that sense, but a collective of very capable and talented artists. It helps that many folks in LA are involved in the movie industry and not afraid to tackle large projects. Other fantastic mobile creations that came out of the "Brewery" in LA are the "Love and Seahorses" art car, which was equally amazing in 2002's Floating World.

It was done by 'The Brewery' and not 'The Do Lab'?
Why's The Do Lab have it on their event creations page, if they didn't create it? The Brewery might want to have a word with them!

Or maybe The Do Lab is related to the Brewery in some way? (and who's the Brewery?) Like most folks, I'm obviously NOT from LA, and don't know the who's what's where down there.
In the end, rock on for making something so fabboo! ...and I'm not trying to down the flower in any way. It was gorgeous. Just gently wondering again who created it.

The Brewery is...
An old brewery that has been converted into a large art collective. Big (and I mean BIG) loft spaces, occupied by many different artists.

The Brewery Arts Complex

Claiming to be the world's largest artist-in-residence complex, the 23-acre Brewery is an outstanding example of adaptive reuse. In 1982, the abandoned Pabst Blue Ribbon brewery was reborn as an artists' community. Today comprising 22 buildings, including a structure from 1888 as well as one of the city's first power stations, the complex is home to more than 500 artists who live and/or work onsite. Twice a year, in April and October, the volunteer Brewery Art Association sponsors the "Brewery Artwalk," which attracts up to 8,000 visitors. The Association also runs a gallery in the complex. Barbara's at the Brewery, a restaurant open weekdays for lunch and dinner, hosts showings of residents' and guests' artwork.
End Quote.
BTW, here are the credits from the many pictures in the gallery of the flower:
This enormous kinetic flower was built on an articulated manlift by Patrick Shearn, the Abundant Sugar crew, and Josh Flemming of the DoLab in LA.

i'm a bike messenger in chicago. Last week i was cruising south on michigan ave, through the mag mile. Hovering 4-stories and poking out from around the corner of a high-rise was none other than "Miracle Grow", albieit with a different color scheme on the fabric. It was a big Lexus ad. Where the stage pplatform/garden was at burning man, it had been replaced with 4 large white walls plastered with the lexus logo, and the flower-crane sprouting from within. The pitchmen were 2 guys walking around on stilts with white spacesuits on. I asked if they knew anythign about burning man, and they had no clue. A cop who was monitoring the whole process overheard me and said the proprietor had mentioned that it was out at burning man.
So i cruise back later and see the proprietor - someone who, if you had to pick one person out of the throngs of tourists on Michigan ave, you would automatically look at and think that he's been to Burning Man before. I chatted with him a bit and said it was the same outfit, that they just rent the crane in each city. Told him that Miracle Grow was the highlight of my week, and chatted about Helios Jive for a bit.
IT seemed like he was trying to downplay the burning man factor, at least out loud and in front of dozns of potential Lexus owners...but a nice guy.
<i think a whole other thread could be started about the contradictions of an Art piece being shared between BM and corporate sponsorship ...it kindof doesn't work for me, but hey i know a guy's got to bay bills and stuff>

Be rational. That thing must've cost a lot of money to get their hands on and to build. I remember a mythbuster episode where they went out looking for a boomlift and the person selling them one said that the cheapest working one he had was 10.000 US Dollars (IIRC). Maybe they got lucky, but if someone wants to display art I made and pay me for it? I'd jump on it.

hello everyone :)
the crane rental alone for last year's burn was about 6 or 7 grand. not one penny was from bmorg, even if they did get to borrow the crane afterwards for free ;)
a group called O2 (not burners) did work with the Flemmings (do lab) on a concert in December (they've been doing lighting gigs for a while) and saw pictures of the flower at BM and asked if they would be interested in setting it up in Chicago for one of their clients, which happened to be Lexus. it wasn't an ad, it was kind of some promotional event for their new car. for the amount of time they've been trying to eke out a living out of what they love to do, it was a great opportunity.
tho to be fair, if I didn't know the flemmings and I turned the corner in Chicago and saw the flower being used to hawk a Lexus, I probably would have thrown up in my mouth a little, but anyone who knows these guys love them like family and I think "commercial outfit" is the last thing that comes to mind if you've had the pleasure of being roped into twisting miles of brown paper into vines for a magical forest they'r'e building for a party, when all you wanted was to stop by and say hi. it's so nice to see them get recognized for some of the mindblowing sh*t they keep pulling out of their ass. plus they're the nicest, funniest, most ego-less guys I know.
just to be nitpicky it was Do Lab and Abundant Sugar (Patrick) that were behind the flower. the "Brewery" refers more to an area/community/complex of artist lofts than an actual organization.
