<yawn> Gooood morning folks.. I just had the loveliest sleep-in, but the sun streaming through my curtains eventually insisted that I get up.

Almost time to fire up the new machine.. wish me luck!

I liked granola a lot more before I broke a molar on something nutty in my morning bowl O goodness once..

<sigh>

New computer is slloooooowly coming together. I'll miss the processing speed of the other one, but not its refusal to run Word, Excel or the other stuff I need on a daily basis.

Only 102 minutes remaining to dump the files transferred via my iPod.. (serial cables and local networking also weren't interested in being cooperative... ah well)

Just read the new JRS newsletter... BLM sucks. Money-sucking bastards. Grr.

I think there SHOULD be an eight of Happy Faces.

Happy Faces
Naked Bodies
Elements
Food

Could be a fun game, eh?

The new machione is a rebuild.. as all of my machines are, thanks to having a ton ot techie friends.

It is slower.. by a lot, so I don't think I'll be doing much video processing on this machine, but everything else should be okay... I'm just stuck at home waiting for it to finish the file transfer, then I need to download iTunes, and rebuild my library so I can put music on my iPod to take to hoop class tonight... AND, the monitor has a weird remote control thingy for its settings, and the battery is dead, so I'm squinting at teeny tiny print on the screen, which is displaying a couple inches of black around the actual window, so I'm hoping new bats will let me expand screen size and actually be able to SEE again!

Made a bit of jewely while I was waiting for the file transfer, and I'm gonna go pop something in the nuker for lunch,, and then hopefully be able to get on with the rest of my day!

http://www.christagiles.com

That site has some pictures on it... I make glass beads, a technique called lampworking... and do some silversmithing too, which may or may not incorporate some of my glass work.

Today, I was putting some store-bought beads (pearls, faceted glass) onti eyepins so I can wear them as danglies off my plain silver hoop earrings, and putting a HUGE green glass bead onto a leather cord to wear as a choker.

Lots of fun playing :)

I'm kinda torn.. I've done most of my work at home on a HotHead, but I use a Minor at the studio where I sometimes rent time... and on the minor, I can make HUGE beads fairly quickly (especially the "organic" kind where the design is all about melting the colours together for unpredictable chemical reactions).. but can't do anything resembling the fine detail I can do using my Hothead.. with glass stringer the size of thread :)

Sounds like you've tried it..?

Yeah, lampwork was a step on my journey to kiln fired. I hated the map gas--so slow, never hot enough. But I only had one weekend with the minor burner and two with the hot heads.

I don't even bother buying MAPP - just use straight propane on my HH, and the studio is hooked up for natural gas + oxy...

Kiln work, eh? I've got a little bead kiln, has both a door for mandrels and a lid for doing traditional stuff.. haven't used it much, other than firing some Precious Metal Clay (malleable like Fino/Sculpey, but fries to 99% pure silver!) ... but thought it might be something I'll get into in the future, which is why I didn't buy one of the little Toolbox kilns, too limited.

Are you doing big work, or jewelry sized? Got pics? :)

I have to wire the shed so I don't damage the kiln. THe winter here has been horrible, so who wants to aske a contractor to work in the rain? If all goes well, I'll be fireing up in june. (deep breath) I had a 6"by6"by6" rapid fire. This one is a 13 inch with a programable (my brain went on the blink) CONTROLLER>

That's just LITTLE! :) I think mine is more like.. 14"x14"x8"... but it ain't so rapid, and I just have the dial that I sit and adjust when the gauge reads high or low...

And I'm now trying to convince iTunes to allow me to play the songs I bought... <sigh>

Have you read the newsletter, or posts about it? Much good info, but in a nutshell:

BLM is trying to charge BM waaay more this year, with a number of sneaky not-quite-legal rationalizations. Bad BLM. Raising the cost in a reasonable way, for legitimate reasons, is okay. That isn't what they are doing.

If you haven't seen it, hit the main Burning Man page and subscribe to the JRS, or look for links to it around here.

I don't see anything wrong with the BLM's position on this. The need for LE exists. The cost of this is high, yes, but necessary. The cost of all GOV agencies doing business is rising, the money has to come from somewhere, it is totally fair to have the user pay the increased cost.

Gotta disagree with you on this Heli. The document is inflammatory and makes BM sound like a 24 hour riot. Also do they really need or just want all the fancy toy's like big SUV's, Night vision equipment, etc?
And really what is going on is a unlawful taxation regardless of excuse to give Pershing county a bigger cut.
The problem would be simply solved by less LEO on the site, eliminating the stings and undercover work which are basically ran against victimless crimes.
The community has been very safe and deserves more trust by LE not more enforcement.
Also they bill a lot more than is used for LE so it is just a money grab.
