A House and Techno Dj is looking for camps to play at Burnin

Post by spacelotus » Tue Apr 25, 2006 4:48 pm

Hi Everyone,
My name is Spacelotus and I am proud to say that I will be attending this years burning man. This will be my fifth in seven years and because I missed last year this one is truly going to be a great experience. I will be moving to San Francisco on May 31st to live and create. I currently live in Honolulu at the moment but was raised in Detroit and Chicago. I am a dj that is looking to play at a couple of camps. If there are any spots open please let me know. You can check out my mixes at www.phamilygathering.com/spacelotus.htm I would love to play an all house and an all techno set so no matter if you need something funky or something chunky I can deliver. I have had the pleasure to be apart of some really fun camps in the past years including light bright, bop camp, and the international burner hostel. It is awesome to be returning to burning man this year and to be able to dj would make it a dream come true. If anyone has any info please let me know.

Peace, love, and disco

Most djs I know who spin there also do a lot more in terms of creating a livable space. They, you know, do things, like help set up tents, shade, ask if they can bring extra water, maybe contribute a few meals, bring party treats, salty snacks and fun sunglasses.

Djs are a dime a dozen. What else ya got?

They also don't get snarky when the internet doesn't roll over and let you scratch its belly.

You sound like a taker.

"Please set up your camp, bring a gennie, bring a sound system, fill it with people and I will deign to spin a set. I can play ANY kind of music you want, as long as it is thunkka chuncka or chuncka thunka."

If anyone has a problem with terminal shit in mouth disease it would be the accuser, not the accused in this case. Anyone that takes sport in making accusations and outright discriminating against people with medical issues certainly has a problem. And considering the zeal in which you attack me time and time again I'm starting to think you have mental issues of your own to deal with.

In any event I feel sorry for you. Stuck in a red state, far away from your friends in the cabal who can only offer you feeble online support....as your isolation grows I have a hunch I'll see more and more attacks and online stalking ...(which is what I consider your quoted post to be)....as your mental state continues to deteriorate. I sincerely hope that you'll take full advantage of those govt benefits and go get some psychological counseling instead of spending time stalking me on Tribe and on the eplaya.

I'm stalked when I come here (see above), which is part of the reason I don't, and when I do, I'm a wanker.

Hey, who wants to set up an orgy camp with me? Can you feel the love?

Chill out you guys and get over yourselves...

Post by spacelotus » Thu May 04, 2006 4:23 pm

Wow, I finally woke you guys up. Get over it. If you guys can't take a criticizing message then why are you on a forum and in reply I have brought sound systems before and I have built camps. I will be helping out and I just wanted to stir the pot to get you guys awake. One thing I have noticed though you guys do talk a lot of shit here instead of getting things done for burning man. If I am guilty of anything it is being excited for burning man. Sue me why don't you. Also to the comment that a dj is a dome a dozen. G you have no idea of the dedication and heart it takes to do something for so long and get shit for it by people who don't understand. Lets see you get behind the decks big mouth and settle this with the beats.

Thanks for showing me how great the eplaya community is. I won't worry though because I know I will find my place to play and you guys will just have to find some one else to slam.

Peace,
Spacelotus

P.S. And for the people who did give help thanks.

Stop talking shit blyslv...........

Post by spacelotus » Thu May 04, 2006 4:39 pm

Let me tell you blyslv. I have built camps on the esplanade and brought 100 people from chicago. I have brought domes, sound systems, and spent over 15 thousand dollars in 2004 to build a camp for burners to enjoy. I have been to burning man since 2000 and also spend my time away from burning man in supporting artists and projects. For you to call me a taker is bullshit and very uncalled for. Before you slam someone who is asking for help to find a place to play and give back think twice.

Thanks,
Spacelotus

P.S I hope I run into you on the playa while you are dancing and I am behind the decks. By the way are you a dj? If so lets settle this behind the decks and see who has the right to talk shit.

Glad you found a camp, and hope you also found a way to relax or something.

Your original post (at the end of April) didn't get a reply in a week's time, so you replied to yourself to bitch at the community? Even if I was interested in booking the kind of music you play, there's no way I'd book an artist who throws a fit on a bulletin board because people aren't showering him with responses/replies.

To trilobyte,

Post by spacelotus » Sun Jul 16, 2006 2:12 pm

Thanks for the greeting but no thanks for your attitude. All I was trying to do was find a place to play and all I got back were private messages from people saying that I was a taker and that djs were not good enough. I can understand where you are coming from with my attitude but you have no idea what the circumstances were with those messages. Also I am not the only person in the community that has recieved shit from people just for trying to find a place to play music. I am sticking up for the people who don't know all the ins and outs to this fourm and are not in with you click for burners. I am a burner for 7 years now and am honored to be able to play again and give back what I can but give me a break. There are so many rude people on this forum it is about time someone stood up for themselves and their art. If you had a problem with what I said then you should have said something in the begginning not send a rude message now. Thanks for the welcoming and have a great burn.

P.S. I am very grateful for the people and camps that understand the hard work and frustration that comes into going to burning man. I have spent the last 7 years supporting friends, camps, and artists I don't even know because that is what I have recieved from so many. It was not unitl I joined this forum that I have meet so many haters and people giving me shit for doing what I am passionate about. In the beginning all I wanted to do was play a show and give help to a camp who needed it. I am very grateful for those who have responed in sincerity and kindness. For all of those who have responded with bullshit well I grateful for you to because you make me proud to be who I am and for sticking up for myslef. In the end it is the music and art that matters not stupid messages back and forth on this forum. I'm sure if we meet in person it would be different and I hope we do because it kills me to have you Trilobyte and others think of me only from this forum and not what I have done and can do for others.

Ah - sorry, I didn't realize you'd posted this as a public reply as well as the private message you sent... for the purposes of this discussion I'll paste in what I just sent you via PM...

-----<snip>------

I never said anything about DJ's not being good enough at all. I was referring to your whiny reply to your own post (I think it was dated May 2nd), pretty much complaining that people hadn't replied or jumped on your offer.

I understand the issues DJ's face a lot better than you think, I'm pretty involved in the underground music scene on the west coast, and have been spinning records since 1983. In my opinion the 'prima donna' attitude that DJ's often exhibit makes the cause much more difficult - it's a negative stereotype that reinforces some peoples' negative opinions about DJ's. producers, and musicians.

My belief is that you invited the wise-ass comments from some of the board regulars by posting that May 2nd reply. I imagine you wrote the original post because you were excited to be heading out into the dust, and your intention was to throw your hat into the ring and offer up your time and energy to camps or sound systems who might be interested. The second post was probably just frustration at not having heard anything yet (though it's kind of early in the season, I wouldn't have expected to hear back in that timeframe), but the way you expressed it came off more like being pissed off that everyone on the playa wasn't jumping at the chance to hear you play.

Yeah, there are a lot of people on the e-playa boards (as well as tribe and other places) who are all kinds of snarky/sarcastic. I don't know that I'd call them haters, though. Take the time to read what's going on on the boards, and you'll see that while they're often sarcastic in their responses, those people are genuinely helpful. At least from what I've seen - I haven't ever met any of them face to face yet. They were probably jumping on your shit because of that second post, too. If you take the time to scout the boards, you'd see the two sticky topics at the top of the page - artist seeking stages and stages seeking artists. Posting in the artists thread would be the right place to put your offer... starting another thread that says "hey I'm a DJ going to Burning Man, who wants to book me?" implies that you can't be bothered to pay attention to the boards or read anything before writing a self-promotional thread. I've been following the boards here off and on for over 2 years, and elsewhere for more than a decade - that's just kind of how 'netiquette' works.

But getting back to the original subject, I'd recommend you post something in that sticky topic for artists seeking stages. The various camps that are bringing out systems and are looking to get slots booked will likely be hitting that thread first and foremost, if not exclusively (they're often too busy with camp stuff to surf through all the threads). Also browse the stages seeking artists, there are sometimes some great camps/systems that make space available on their schedules for people who step up that they might not otherwise already know.

Good luck.
