Atlanta-area n00b!

Post by Draconigena » Thu Apr 20, 2006 10:45 pm

Hey everybody!

I am a student in the Atlanta, GA area and am active in the local Pagan, BDSM, and techno communities. I've been to many Pagan gatherings and a few regional burns (Transformus!) but this'll be my first year at BM. As you can imagine, I'm excited beyond belief!

Do most of you folk who travel long distances to get there fly into Reno and buy supplies/rent a car once you get there, or what?

If any fellow ATL burners know of groups/contingents I can hook up with, please let me know. New friends = goooood. :D

Hello, Draconigena! Yeah, BM is a blast...every flavor of ice cream (arts, camping, humanity, freedom of any expression, self reliance and self searching, and a whole bunch of "I wonder if...". It's totally fresh. Stop by The Bar (a thread under "Open Discussion") to chat in pretty-quick-time with burners (virgins to vets) about ideas, thoughts, and questions. Yes, be very VERY excited :D

I'm me,

just me

though that should be enough yrt never is

Flying down all alone at the tender age of 17 (or 18 when I'm there)
from south africa having read about burning man in google's biography

I'm a sort of highschool dropout into everything engineer, artist, builder, ice skater etc.

I'm currently working on all sorts of PC related stuff, the kind of stuff which would be boring if not for the variety, timetable generation (for universities, hellish stuff), opengl database querying, dynamic web design, intelligent information aggregation, whatever.

I paint, draw, sculpt, create jewlery (not the crafts kind) and all in all don't get very much sleep.

+know no-one in California/Nevada and would like to (especially, for the moment if you're trekking through the desert or driving to bm and would like company).

I'd probably like to meet you, hi in advance,

and hope that I do

there is an annual eplaya meet-and-greet at the event (its now one of my favorite things there) where you can spy most of the people here and make good intro connections as you find your own way. this crazy circus is still diverse with people and expressions, so go right ahead, dont be afraid to dream up something of your own.

grettings from Ciudad de Los Angeles Caidos

My name's Peter Max (my real names because I'm Russian-American, not because my parents were hippies who dug the famous 60s artist) - Actually I'm the hippie, or used to be, was a flower CHILD, because my parents died '64 and I was raised partly by hippies who spent a lot of time on a commune in Topanga Canyon, CA - and of course I dug the art of Peter Max (not because he shares my name, because the art is good)

I was hipped to Burning Man by Johnette Napolitano, who is Concrete Blonde: alternative music. Johnette and me went to elem sch and jnr high together. She remembers singing Ave Maria in choir when the teacher cried while Steve Porcaro (Toto) smacked the bottoms of the girls in front of them. I on the other hand, remember singing Traces of Love in choir, which to this day makes me cry and there's no logical explanation for this emotional reaction, which is really bitchin (re: 60s slang for "cool")

I like emotional reaction to music.

I like it when the hair stands up on my arms and my neck tingles as reaction to specific chordal progressions and melody.

I like to laugh at intellectual responses to music.

My original music here (unlike my original orchestral music) tends to sound like Brahmsian lullabies morphed to goth eclected to 'other' -- or maybe what Brahms or Chopin (two depressed Romantics) might have composed if alive today and attempting to write pop songs (persish the thought)

If you like, go here to listen to a couple of shitty demos of it:

http://www.soundclick.com/orphanus

Explaining 'shitty' comment above: I hate recording music, meaning I always love to play music, but enjoy recording only if someone else is pushing the buttons and crap. But I'm also reclusive (massive understatement) so have this portable recorder-burner and was messing with it by myself to create the above rough-songwriter-demo recordings. The result is shitty because I'm too lazy to get into editing, which is vital because the nature of my music is rich harmonically etc. and therefore a good producer and engineer would be helpful in making these songs sound better, for example, helping me select good takes, re-taking crappy takes (especially out of tune vox), panning, eq-ing, fx etc. etc. all the stuff that people do who care more about recording music than actually playing it. Give me a live gig any day over the studio.

If you do visit my mp3 site, please email me & tell me what you think of my songs... thanks. -- [email protected]

May all the So Cal fallen angels gather and rejoice in the coming of nobody and the resurrection only of lonely human spirits who wish to commune in spiritual harmony,

Nothing too heavy, I do some plugin development for the Serendipity blogging system when I have time, a few plugins for DokuWiki as well. I also have a project on the go called "Meditation", it is a REST API framework for PHP.

Hello burning man world,

I happened to stumble upon this world the other day. No, really, I did stumble onto it. I was in the store not paying attention to what I was doing, tripped over a stack of newspapers and fell into the magazine stand and an issue of Skin & Ink breaks my fall. I look at the cover and see Tattoo rave at burning man! Now I am intrigued. I buy the magazine read the article, surf the website, and now I don’t want to leave.

So I guess I should introduce myself. Let see… I am 27 year old male from Hagerstown, Maryland. My motto is to live it not read it. With that being said I really do enjoy all aspects of life and try to participate in what I can. This is in part why I am writing here, I want to be a part of Burning Man. Now, I just need to do it.

So I am off to find a mentor to take me under their wings and guide me through my first Burning man experience.

Hope to see you there.

Welcome to E-playa Jonnay, Nosaj 969, and V_4_vendetta If you haven’t been to Burning Man before then , It’s impossible to fully describe what you might encounter , even if you have been before you know it’s impossible to describe what might await you, that said It’s often stated here and can’t be said to much you need to read every thing you can on the Burning Man project site and things on these threads to prepare yourselves for this experience. It could make the difference between having an incredible time and being air lifted to a hospital. I strongly suggest making friends with others who will be attending the event , there are regional groups in most areas and particular interest groups on line .

V this is a link to a tribe group for fire spinners maybe you can meet someone there if you don’t here.

Hi.

My name is Peter. I am interesting in Living life to it's fullest. Heard about Burning man a few years ago. Looked it up today. A community with no comercialism. Where gifting is the currency of the day and art is all around. Cool! Sounds like the place where I should be. If I can get a ticket I will be there this year.

Hope tickets are still available when I have the cash. Have some Ideas for gifting but it requires more thought. color=indigo][/color]

Welcome home, all you new faces!!!

Box Burner...

No worries about the tickets. They'll be available up to Thursday of the event. But they get progressively more expensive as time goes on.

Hang out here and read all you can. And don't be afraid to ask questions. there's plenty of good souls 'round here to help you out.

LeChatNoir

Thank you for the welcome and well met.

I will not worry about getting a ticket as you say they will be available. I did take a look around and am glad to see that they will only go up to $250. Hope someone will sell me one of the cheap ones though, cause right now two pennines look like a mountain of cash. But I will pay $250 if I have to. Besides, I really do like peanut butter sandwhiches. :D

Saw in your profile that you like blacksmithing. While it is not exactly blacksmithing I have dabled a little in making Medieval armour. Have most of a full set of armourers tools scattered between here and Utah. Keep thinking that I oughta get 'em out and make something. Just had a fine Idea. Have to get out the beverly shear ... Well we shall see.

I'm a BM virgin, and will be for a few years yet... life has gotten pretty boring - married with (teen) kids in the burbs, one kid going to college this fall, the great american 4 year experimentation trip without focus, you know. Jeezus Keereist, I have a corporate desk job and a 401k.... *AND I THINK I LIKE IT MAN!* Shit. This life makes me feel old and used. I think BM is part of the cure for that. I love conservation work, and don't mind cleaning up after other people's children (adults included), very used to that. I have a chemistry degree, and homebrewing skills - I can't figure out yet how to make, store and then transport enough bottle-conditioned homebrew halfway across the continent for a week of constant gifting. I also dig small scale metal sculpture with brazing, like making masks and stuff.

Hi, I'm Mark. I heard whispers about Burning Man long ago, but I didn't decide to start looking into it until I saw the short documentary on Google Current television. Everything I see on this site feels more and more like a calling to me, like this was a dream I had and forgot about until it became real and found me out, on my couch, waiting for what?

I hope I can figure out a way to go this year. I don't know if it will happen-- I'm low on dough and a few minutes away. I'm going to be there, though. It's impossible for me to not go as soon as I can.

I write stories, and I am a political organizer on my college campus and for young people statewide. The state is Ohio, and the campus is Ohio University in Athens. The small mountains here are beautiful, and the weather has been ridiculously beautiful this spring. But the long winter's dry enlightening is wearing off, and the spirits are burdened by burdens. I do not know Nevada. I would like to know Nevada. I will know Quebec City this summer, where I will be studying French. I do not understand birds.

Thanks for everything already. This online experience is warming. I cannot imagine the heat. I look forward to giving stories and anything I can, and I will dream of your creations until we meet!

-Mark

Hi Everyone,

I just wanted to say hi. I look forward to getting to know the burning man community. My first burning man was 2000 and let me say like so many that it changed my life. The inspiration and direction I received has lead me to live life with a goal of happiness and pride in knowing how to live with honor and peacefulness. I then attended 2001,2003,2004 and now will be returning in 2006. 2004 was was great year for me and the Chicago phamily. We brought 100 people and a great camp called Bop Camp to the esplanade. I had the honor with friends to have built a large camp and a club called the Indigo and let me say through all the hard work and troubles that camp was the greatest achievement for all of us involved. One whole years worth of fundraising and bringing people together in Chicago and to have it all work out in Black Rock City is a dream come true but to have found my soulmate in 2003 and to have married her in hawaii in 2005 is the greatest story one could ever tell. This year in 2006 will be a destiny fulfilled and I thank everyone in the past that has made all this possible. Fate, chance, or luck what ever it is I will always be grateful for Burning Man and the community that makes it what it is. I would like to also thank Fred (Haggey) and the burner hostel for bringing so many great people together who would have never had a chance to have had such great company. 2006 is my come back year so look out, say hi, and listen for the beats I might just be playing.

To all you new faces…Welcome home. Glad you finally made it.

Fed…

There are several metal workers around here. There are several homebrewers around here too. And as to the feeling used up… being forced to subscribe to things in life that we might not prefer to subscribe just so that we can make a living has a way of getting one down. But you’ve stumbled upon a great treatment plan for the default world. Poke around in here and see what you can find. There’s a wealth of information to get you prepared. And being self-sufficient in the desert for a week is something you definitely want to be prepared for.

MarkAmerica…

I hope you make it this year. But if you don’t, do not give up. It took me three years of trying and I made it on the fourth. And it was worth every second of the wait and then some. So until you smell the playa for yourself, dream away and read all you can about it. Learn and prep…

Hey. I am dutifully making my first post [after having a bit of a lookie around]. I'm Cass, from Perth, Australia. I have known of Burning Man for several years and loved the idea of it from the first moment I heard about it. I haven't been outside of Australia since 1998, but before that, I had travelled widely and been to many large and small festivals all over my own country and the world. I am mostly over festivals now, but BM is obviously something very different and seems to be calling me. If funds permit, and the world is still reasonable together by August, I hope sincerely to be joining you. I'm starting early[ish] with the more detailed research and setting my goals. I hope to gift many people beautiful hair, as many of my hairpieces have already made it to the Playa in previous years, I am hoping to contribute in person this time. The theme for this year was partly instrumental in my resolve growing very firm, it resonates very strongly with what I have been feeling for the past few months and I am sure will intensify as the year continues. I only expect to attend for this one Project if I do, and I have a gut feeling that it's very important for me to do so if I possibly can. Sound right?

Welcome home Aussie Lass you will make it to the Playa if it is drawing you..

Not sure about your last line though? maybe I just do not understand why attend for just one project? I would not even think it would be possible sort of like going to Disneyland to just meet Mickey Mouse

Greetings and salutations.
My name is Christine.

My first Burning Man experience was in 2005.
I look back on the previous year and see how this one event has greatly affected my life. Burning man has opened my eyes wider and allowed me to see more beauty in the ordinary. The playa has embraced my soul.

I want to thank an amazing individual and special group of friends that have afforded me this opportunity to participate all the more in 2006 and return the playas warm embrace. Thank you Jared and for all of the awesome energy from Kathanika’s burners.

This is how I felt last year after I burned for the first time...

The most amazing event I have ever experienced...inspiring to say the least!

It was beautiful and crazy and magnificent. A true blue wonderland.

Lots of ideas for next year...I have a feeling that burning man will consume much of my energies hence forth. Artistic freedom and artistic reason.

I can't believe I was so turned off by the hippie factor for soooo long...not anymore. This event is not about hippies...it is about art, love and happiness grounded by madness. It is about an idealistic society and community at its finest.

It restores ones faith in human nature and reminds us that there are people out there with artistic drive, desires and overall acceptance of one another’s individuality and the infinite forms of personal, raw, human expression.

A high tech shanty in the middle of the playa...a magical place...a spiritual place. Freaking brilliant.

This marks my new year. This marks an ending to any debilitating stress of human existence and all of the inane self disillusioning one allows "society" or their own mind to put on them. Not necessary...not anymore. my personal freedom of expression combined with the sense of community unlike any I have ever experienced has felt like poison drawn from a wound...release my self of human bondage and set my mind and my body free.

I know where I belong for at least 1 week out of the year. However, more importantly I know where my heart and soul infinitely belong.

Good to meet you folks.

c.
