Cold water... that is what gets ya. When I was I kid I took swimming lessons for two summers (my parents made me) and did not learn to swim because the water was so cold I could not move. The next year the indoor poll was built at the high school and I learned to swim in a week.Rockdad wrote:Very cold water! Snowmelt I think that's what gets em first

Haven't done an open-water polar bear swim, but have done both backyard pools, and the outdoor pool at UBC.. we actually had snow that year, so people were making snow angels, too :) I decided I was going to be hardcore and dive in at the deep end and swim 50m to the shallow end.. BRRRR! Hint 1: do NOT immerse head! Hint 2: 50m in frigid water just for fun is STUPID. <grin>

most people do not realize it but it does not have to be real cold to get hypothermia. And water will take away your body heat faster than air so just a few degrees in a pool can be bad.Xta_G wrote:...so it is kept about 4 degrees cooler than most pools... BRRRR! Instructors wear wetsuits for their teaching shifts, and the little 3-4yr olds turn blue in about half an hour

Absolutely, BB! I don't own a wetsuit, but I layer one or two swimming caps on, and it does an amazing job of trapping the heat that would normally be escaping through my head.. that, and doing the "armpits and nipples covered" huddle when I'm not demonstrating something, or jumping and splashing around to stay warm.. lots of tricks to make it bearable!

Oh my God, Tisha's here and the place is a mess.
cock wipes down bar, dumps ashtrays (ew!), sweeps, organizes liquor bottles, flushes beer tap lines (ew!), takes inventory
Looks like we're out of decent rum again.
Plenty of tequila.
Need more white wine for the ladies.
Duck, can you stock us up? I think we need another solar fridge too.

Xta_G I never thought about using swimming caps. But I guess that most guys wouldn't use them anyway.
But keeping your head warm makes a BIG difference. Once, in the Fall, in the Ocre Mountains I got caught in a rainstorm at the very top. It took 3 hours to hike back down to where I found the car had been moved to the mouth of the canyon by my brother. I was soaked to the bone, except for my head which stayed dry under a nice leather hat. Consequently I was in good spirits when I reached the car. So wear a hat. It'll help you keep your head when all others are losin' theirs.

Hm.... just thought of something I could do with the knitting pattern I'm currently designing for the yarn store I work at.. namely, approaching the company that manufactures the yarn it is made with, and see if they want to buy the publishing rights for it, so they can print and sell it to their retailers everywhere...
Anyone have suggestions for how I go about opening this proposal? "Hi! I've created a pattern showcasing your Organic Cotton. Would you be interested in buying the pattern to publish yourselves?"
Sounds so... cheesy. I hate sales. Any advice?

X Write up the instruction book with pictures, etc. just the way you would do it if you were publishing it yourself. They are more likely to purchase a finished product.

Actually, just thought of something else:
CALLING ALL KNITTERS AT BAR CAMP!
Would anyone like to get a copy of this pattern, in Word format via email.. to help proof the instructions for me, and then you have a nifty free pattern to knit up if you like the design?
Toss me an email at [email protected] if you're interested... Thanks!
