Where would YOU recommend?

When Burning Man finally finishes this summer (wait one moment while I wipe a tear from my eye

) me and my travelling partner Miss Malibu will have about a week to get back to San Francisco before our flight. Where is good to visit? What is good to do? I there anywhere good to stay? So many questions, so little time! Suggestions on a postcard please

Well what do you like doing? What are your interests?

It could be Disneyland or a tour of old west ghost towns. there's a lot of ground inbetween.

Not overly excited about Disneyland but ghost towns sound good. I like somewhere quiet with a good view (I must be getting old!), not really picky about what I do, just want something I wouldn't be able to do at home. It would make an already amazing trip an awesome one

Now, that's a view--Monument Valley in Arizona.
Grand Staircase Escalante is supposed to be spectacular.
is perhaps overdone, but deserved famous
Adn I've wanted to go here for a long time.

Southern Utah is crammed with five amazing National Parks, Bryce Canyon being my personal favorite.

Arches near Moab is great too, and Goblin Valley State Park is unlike anything else you've ever seen. Galaxy Quest was filmed there. Rock! Rock! Rock!

Almost forgot Kodachrome Basin, some of the most, well, erotic rock spires ever. Near Escalante if you're in that area.

You could also extend your burningman experience by filling out the volenteer questioniere and staying with DPW to help get teh clean up started.

I used to believe that Las Vegas had no redeeming value. But then I found a go-kart track and finally had some fun.

For side trips, you could go to Yosemite, Sequoia, Mt Lassen, Death Valley
Mammoth Mtn, Mt Shasta, Big Sur, Arcata, Pismo Beach, The High Sierras,
Joshua Tree, Palm Springs tramway, Idylwild, Coast highway, Virginia City
Mogollon rim, Grand canyon, Petrified Forest and 1 million other interesting places.

Agree with AntiM. More visual bang for the buck if you head to Utah and check out the great National Parks and monuments. Afterwards, head south to the Arizona/Utah border area and check out the Vermillion Cliffs.

No the further out of town the better really. I'd love somewhere quiet with a bloody good view! These are all marvellous ideas and I will have to try as many as possible, however, I don't really get the scale of the country. How far from utah etc would we be up there in good ol' Gerlach?

Hey peeps
I'm nogganoodles buddy,
We were thinking of maybe flying to Las Vegas instead of San Fransisco as we had originally planned so if you can think of any good places to stop that are on the way up to burning man from there then that would be cool! I noticed that Yosemite national park is sorta on the way so will def try and see that as you folks have recommended it. Cheers for your help guys

Miss M, If you drive from Vegas to Death Valley it will bring you out on hwy 395 at the base of Mt Whitney, go north to mammoth lakes (devils post pile worth seeing) then loop into Yosemite, Mono lake, Bodie if you like ghost towns.

On your next trip, you can check out the view. You can sometimes see 200 miles from the Mogollon Rim. Skyline drive in Utah goes up to 11,000ft and has incomparable views. Top of the World Drive in Yukon territory is spectacular too. Mt Whitney is about 14,000 ft with wonderful views across to Death Valley. The back road into Yosemite, Tioga Pass is 10,000 ft and not recommended for flatlanders. The view from glacier Point above Yosemite is incomparable. Colorado has an 14,000 ft mountain that you can drive up. Pikes Peak
They're all impressive.
I'm not sure about hookers and blow in the mountains.

I wasn't going to mention Toroweap, but I guess I won't cause a stampede. Go north out of Vegas and turn right on the road to Flaming Gorge. Then take a right towards Mt Trumbal.
Drive straight,,,stop at the edge of the Grand Canyon.
It's absolutely undeveloped. The last time that I was there, there were 2 picnic tables and 2 porta-johns,,,nothing else.
The road was gravel. I think that they keep it that way for the people who hate crowds. I believe it's the most spectacular part of the Grand Canyon.

It has a trail to the bottom,,Lava Falls Trail It's very short and very steep.
No, I didn't hike it. I only saw 5 other people there.
There is a guest book and I read quite a few complaints about flightseeing planes. There were only a few in November.
It's beautiful and mostly unknown.

Hot springs are actually what I would suggest. They are quite a few in the part of the country where you're going to be. I LOVE soaking in natural hot springs (it may have something to do with being a professional hydrogeologist).

There's one near Hoover Dam in Vegas (PM me for exact directions).

There's an exquisite one in the Saline Valley, just west of Death Valley (palm trees surrounding a grassy oasis in the desert with concrete lined ponds - not very many people go there since you have to travel down 45 miles of gravel road - 4WD not required, high clearance SUV or P/U Truck OK. I'm sure early Sept. is probably not the best time to go there - it will be hot as fuck - Helitack could tell you for sure though, since he lives in Death Valley.

There are several outstanding springs in the Bishop/Mammoth Lakes area.

There's a great one in Austin, NV, described to me by the writer/publisher of "The Hot Springs Gazette" as "the most healing spring I've ever been to in my life."

There are MANY great hot springs on the way from BRC to San Francisco, beginning with Wild Mint and Cedarville less than an hour west of BRC heading toward Redding. Then there's Surprise Valley, Big Bend, Hun, Kosh, and a whole lot more, depending on which way you go.
