Dreadlock Theme Cult, Army or Camp?

Hey Burners,

I finally bought my flights & will call ticket for BM2006 last week so I am definitely on my way - coming atcha from pretty much the other side of the world - Perth, Australia - so it's quite a committment for us folks down here! I am ecstatically excited to be heading to my first Burn, and have alot of ideas about what I want to do. I've been told it's generally better for newbies to not belong to a theme camp or take on too much, to just go and experience it - but I am expecting this to be my one and only visit to BRC, and I really want to do something: in the default world I am very much a hub organiser type character, and wouldn't really feel involved unless I had some kind of distinct contribution.

However, this is a bit difficult to do from afar, as people I'm hoping to have the same interests in theme are possibly few and far between. So I'm trying to work out whether what I want to do would be feasible as a theme camp, whether or not there might already be a camp along these lines, or whether it might be something people might want to do as a network of individuals on the move [similar to the random acts of postcards].

So, as you can see in the post subject - I'm real keen on dreadlocks - and well, hair extensions also: in my default life I spend alot of time doing dreadlock maintenance and installing extensions of various types. Obviously many people for practical reasons or permanent lifestyle choice have either dreads,extensions or braids of some kind on the playa. There are several dread care & extension care services I'd love to offer and would like to network with other likeminded folk - brainstorm ideas if anyone is keen on forming a theme camp, a mobile team of dread sprucer-upperers, or anything along those lines? Maybe you have some even better ideas, or catchy names for such a group? I am sure alot of people on the playa would dearly appreciate a nice refreshing conditioning/cooling spray in the heat of the day at the very least, and more substantial maintenance for permanent dreadies, time permitting.

I would love to get some feedback - if you'd like to be involved, know any theme camps already doing something like this, or just plain like the idea of something like this and feel it would be something you'd like to have on the Playa, please comment! If there's enough interest I can set up a tribe for discussion & organisation for interested parties.

wildilocks I do not know why someone would tell you that newbie's should not be in a theme camp? Theme camp would be great for newbie's in my opinion.
Now if someone said that a newbie should not start a theme camp I would wholeheartly agree.

Anyhow for someone coming from across the world the extra support of a theme camp would be great for you.

I think you already know your welcome at the Eplaya Bar Camp.

A theme camp can be an excellent resource for a newby, starting a theme camp is often overwhelming the first time around. Heck, it took us five years to nail down the perfect shade structure!

I am pretty aware that I couldn't start a theme camp or even put together most of one on my own: I'll only be in the area a week before the event, and I won't have access to resources to put together larger structures - need other people who are preferably not newbies, but maybe hadn't considered this kind of theme... part of the reason why I put forward the option of a cult/army type group if there is interest but not enough to actually form a solid camp.

This will be my 7th (and probably last) year out there and my oh-so-unsolicited advice is... Go ahead and make all the plans you want. Really, plan away; just be prepared to see them all blown to ashes. When that happens, and it will happen to some degree or another, you've got to keep an open mind and an open heart. Improvisation is key.

If you succeed, then I'd say that it's very likely that you're going to have the most fun you've ever had with your pants on.

If I don't get much of a response [so far none on the doing side, but it's the kind of thing that might take a while] then it might be easier to just do this as a mobile solo thing, then there's very little to go wrong!!

wildilocks i think someone even roaming around wandering , doing dreadlock maintnace , would be fabtaboulous as i know that like after 1 day on the playa im sure mine will be all kinds of havoc , not so much worried about the dust , more or less just basic care , id give you a def . thumbs up on the idea

I think its great that you want to share your talents with everyone, but I would definitly recomend keeping it light and not get too busy because as your first time you will want to see and do all the wonderful things that are going on 24 hours a day. Joining a theme camp is the BEST way to camp (this will be my fifth burn) because you have shared resources and you will meet tons of people and you will have many people who will want to you share your skills...

Eeee I haven't been to ePlaya for ages - thanks for the suggestions, I am definitely keeping it low key, it will be a wandering gifting thing and I'll do it when I feel like it so I'm not tied to any time or place
