I have Larry's 12 gauge at hand, but the damn thing is nearly as tall as I am. Bruises the hell out of my shoulder, but I can knock the crap out of milk jugs until the ammo runs out. I'm assuming I can use it in the house if I had to do so.

And you should see all the sharp things ... impractical, but the cops raised their eyebrows high at the collection on the wall in the basement.

If I can see the front porch on my house and my old blue mustang in front (and where it is in relation to the phone pole) you can only guess what the classified images are.

At one time it was telling the brand of a cigarette pack. Now I hear they can read the surgeon general's warning on one side... and the barcode on the other. This with enhanced digital imagery and good optics. Heard it's better than the old film cans of yore. Not too shabby.

I hear the big improvement is in movability and detection through cloud cover. If we only had that back then.

I hate being seen as an oldtimer. Still, in this case I guess it might be apropos. Some of of us board denizens still have some institutional history to draw on. Hell, JD might even be considered the precursor to He Who Lies About Having Cancer.

In JD's case its sorta like thinking you have smallpox eradicated and then...bam. Another outbreak.

He's been gone a couple of years and now he returns.

Your worst fear. Hell, Google the clues.

The guy's an internet legend albeit a pitiable one.

To be exact, they're located in Naperville, Illinois, a distant suburb of Chicago, as an arin whois search will confirm. Chicago is a long way from Reno, where Hugh is located. I've been saying this from the beginning of this thread. Anybody care to start listening to reason?

Rockdad has made two contradictory accusations, and claimed to have proof for both. Obviously, he can't have been telling the truth both times. What I'd like to know is why the mods let him get by with behavior like this, and why so many users on this board stubbornly refuse to add 1 and 1, and come up with two. At this point, they don't even need to visit any other site to see the inconsistencies. They only have to look at Rockdad's posts.

Interesting. But as with many things related to Badger he has a serious perception problem. That was a picture of where I used to live. But I've moved from there due to the construction on US 71 (Grandview Triangle Interchange reconstruction project). The rock blasting cracked my walls and a window and management wouldn't fix it so when my lease was up I bolted. He should be aware of that but for some reason he seems to think I still live there.

In any event it's over and done with and I have no problems with you.

Small problem: There's more than one guy in Chicago named "Joseph Dunphy". This fact was explained to Badger last night, and Badger didn't want to hear it. Quoting from the new target's homepage,

I started getting strange, screaming phone calls from a group of people calling themselves "burners". "What do you burn", I asked one of them, who just got angrier. They found an ad I had posted on my site, for my tutoring services in mathematics. They were greatly offended by it, because according to them, by teaching Mathematics I was "teaching hatred to the young people of America". Something about mathematical proofs being a form of persecution because they destroy the beliefs of those who see Mathematics differently. Ah yes, Postmodernism, but I'm not very well known. How did those people find me?

It was my name. "Joseph Dunphy" is an annoyingly common name, especially in Chicago, where half of the Catholic girls seem to have a devotion to St.Joseph. They don't use birth control, so their families were fruitful and they multiplied. Oh, dear God did they multiply. This was a minor annoyance in the real world. Somebody would yell out "Hey, Joe" and half of the room would turn around. Online, it became a much bigger headache.

The people I was hearing from had been in an argument with somebody else named "Joseph Dunphy" on one of their "Burning Man" lists. They wanted to set a magnesium bonfire and were very angry because he told them that doing so would be dangerous. This was possibly the most stupid argument that I had ever heard of, but I still had hopes of getting out of it. I told them "wrong Joe, please move on", but they didn't want to accept that. They also wanted me to endorse that magnesium bonfire idea, which I wasn't going to do, because that really would be dangerous.

I was amazed at their stupidity. Were they under the impression that after the first woman named Dunphy gave birth to a Joseph, that the name was retired like an old jersey? The calls continued and then something really stupid happened.

I noticed that I wasn't getting any new clients. I call around and found out why. Somebody was calling the colleges, pretending to be me, and asking that my name be removed from the tutoring lists. I asked to be returned to those lists, explaining that the person who had done this was a prankster. I make sure to do so in person on each campus, presenting personal identification and asking that such requests on my behalf not be accepted over the phone. What followed was predictable. The prankster or pranksters did it again and again. Getting the office staff to remember not to honor these requests took some doing and I lost a lot of income. Tutoring isn't a great job, but it was my livelihood.

I stopped hearing from them for a while and thought that I was rid of them. No, I got some e-mail from some of them again, recently. The fun is due to start all over again. There was a fight of some kind on their board, and one of their subculture's many conspiracy theorists started accusing other people of being his persecutors, hiding as "sock puppets". My name and e-mail address came up in discussion. I don't know why and don't really want to, ...

Good job, guys, whoever you are. This is what happens when you take accusations on faith.

Just wondering, and not as a mod, just me, what's the goal here? Is this the modern equivalent of pistols at dawn? Seems like a ton of time and energy, and excuse me for being clueless, why? I considered a sock to ask this question, I feel constrained as a mod, but I'm not a sock kinda girl. Maybe I'm over a line and opening a can of worms I will eregret, but this is bothering me, why keep at each other?

So really, why keep this up? Is it the thrill of the fight? A crusade for peace, justice and the American way? Performance art? And is there a gift to the eplaya community in all this?

Thank you, I feel much better now just for asking. I may or may not respond if you choose to reply, but I certainly will read any reply and think about it carefully. And no, I will not follow links off to other sites, I literally am not going there.

And then reintroduced by him onto this thread, but why obsess on the facts? You've barely payed attention to them at all up to this point and everybody seems OK with that, so why break with a practice that's working out so well for you?

Rockdad has been playing the same game consistently throughout this entire incident. First, he accused Dustbuddy of being Hughmungus and you and I both know that Hughmungus has done more than his share of flaming, and acquired more than his share of enemies. Rockdad might have hoped that some of those enemies would have followed the usual practice on this board, taken the sock puppet accusations at face value, and started attacking Dustbuddy thinking that they were attacking Hugh. For reasons I will not pretend to know, this time that didn't occur.

Rockdad responded to this disappointing reality by manufacturing a brand new sock puppet accusation that was logically inconsistent with his previous sock puppet accusation. Having firmly denied that Dustbuddy really was posting from ntsource.com and was using the IP that his Usenet post had originated from, Rockdad then flip flopped 180 degrees and based on the very IP he had just refused to accept, tried to claim that Dustbuddy was a much flamed Wikipedia editor calling himself "65", apparently hoping to get the editors of Wikipedia to snap at the bait refused by Hughmungus' enemies on this board.

Regrettably from Rockdad's point of view, this effort failed as well. The Wikipedians were already well aware of Netsource's large pool of common IPs, because there were already a number of clearly distinct editors there subscribing to our beloved if rickety ISP.

Let it never be said that the man is lacking in tenacity, when he decides that he wants to be vengeful. Having seen his first two distinct and logically inconsistent sock puppet accusations practically make ePlaya history by failing to fool even a single would-be flamer, Rockdad went dredging back through the history of ePlaya to pull up the name of somebody he had to have felt certain that somebody would have to want to flame - and there he found it. There was somebody with those very unpopular initials of "JD" at Netsource, the ISP of the man he had worked so hard to smear.

As usual, Rockdad offered not a speck of evidence in support of yet another inflammatory accusation, clearly intended to draw Dustbuddy into somebody else's flamewars, revealing unto the world the deep, dark secret that our ISP has harbored in its ranks a man carrying the rare and exotic name of "Joseph", the only name in the United States more common than "John". Oh what oh what could Pat Vanderford have been thinking of, when he decided to let a scandal like that walk in through our ISP's door? Why today you're doing business with a "Joseph" and tomorrow it will be a "Mary" and with all of the recent immigration into our area, who knows, maybe even a "Jesus"?

This can be mildly amusing until one takes a look at the issue of "collateral damage", as somebody put it. My own annoyances ever since Spec decided to violate my privacy by revealing to the board which IP block I was posting from, as he glossed over the issue of dynamic IP, have been minor ones. Not everybody has been so fortunate, as that recent excerpt from somebody's homepage showed. The usual excuse some have offered for the sick and outrageous behavior we have seen out of you and Spectabillis has been that our moderators are volunteers, and so we should be so grateful to them for their volunteer efforts, that we won't object to little things like being stabbed in the back by one of them while we are away from the board. But why should the most recently attacked party feel grateful to the staff of this board at all?

The individual in question is not a burner in any sense, having never been to Burning Man and having no interest in ever going, which under the circumstances is more than understandable. Why should he be expected to accept any abuse at all on behalf of a festival which means nothing to him, except to the extent that it has become a source of harassment for him, based on nothing more than his name?

An incident like this does not make the community look good. I'm not surprised that you'd like it to go away, especially now that the spin you and Spec tried to put on it is looking less plausible by the minute, but there does have to be such a thing as personal accountability. You can't buy your way out of that with a little volunteer labor.

It is outrageous that Rockdad has responded to the simple fact of having one of his quoted sources checked, with one of the least subtle efforts to get a fact checker harassed that I have ever witnessed, holding on with the tenacity of a pit bull hanging onto a mailman. It is outrageous that our moderators have played on the ignorance of some of our less informed members about how IP addresses work in support of that same troll's personal vendetta against a newcomer who was guilty of nothing more than telling the truth. It is truly outrageous that one of Chicago's many disadvantaged citizens is now publicly wondering what hit him, because of infighting in a community that he had never heard of, involving issues so insane that even some of those of us who were here are struggling to believe what they have seen.

They are basic standards of acceptable behavior in any civilized society and nobody should have to be paid or bribed to abide by them. You have wiped your backside on those standards, gloated about your willingness to do so, and now that the discussion has suddenly turned against you and taken a direction you don't like, you're trying to make that embarassing fact go away with a pious appeal to the value of "community". As somebody wrote in another thread, "community begins with the words 'I've got your back'". When this community starts acting like a community instead of like a corporate boardroom, raise that issue again and maybe I'll think about it.

Until then, get off it.

History repeats itself. Rockdad will run into somebody who he thinks is one of his persecutors in disguise, go on the attack, and then never let go. More than a few, and I'm beginning to understand the man's exasperation. There is nothing statistically anomalous about having a large number of men named "Joseph" carrying a particular surname. "Joseph" is the most common man's name in the United States. Picture having your business shut down because you shared a very common name with somebody who had been in an argument on a board that you had never heard of, and you both lived in a metropolitan area with roughly the same number of people as Belgium. I disagree. I tried to find out who you were talking about by doing a search for posts authored by "D***" on ePlaya. I couldn't find any, but a search under "Green Tortoise" and "D***" on Yahoo proved more successful. I assume that you're talking about the member commonsense at newsguy.com?

If so, the stylistic differences could not be more striking. The newsguy subscriber writes practically in paragraphs, nesting phrase within phrase in a static manner. T*** writes in staccato bursts, each line in a narrative building on the previous ones in a kind of free association. Then there are the decorative choices made by each, with T*** applying the same cream and tan background to every page, while Newsguy/c*** seems to be trying to do op art in text form. T*** has written an adult page, and Newsguy seems to have trouble swearing without sticking in a few asterisks by way of apology.

About the only similarity that I can find is that both write in English, but perhaps I am missing something.

It's an opinion and I'm entitled to it, and I certainly should not be targetted for expressing it civilly and by PM at that. I might also add that if you look at the Googlegroups archives, you'll find that Badger's old enemy always used the same professional vanity login and it didn't begin with "t". Look for yourself.

Badger has defended the targetting of this third party on the basis of his imagined ability to determine who is who, based on writing style. I'm surprised to hear that his training as a labtech included the study of textual analysis, but if so, good for them. I'm just not so sure of Badger's expertise in this area as he seems to want to be.

Let's say that he was right about everything that he was saying - that I was who he wanted me to be, that old enemy of his, and that he could tell that just by the way I wrote some utilitarian text. Then why would he have been so cooperatively stupid as to send me comments that when publicly displayed are this damaging to him, to somebody he would have to expect would be glad to make use of them?

The only rational conclusion to draw is that he was not under the impression that either I or Dustbuddy were JD at the time he sent us those messages. Yet now he's supporting that claim, which means his alleged expertise abandoned him on one occasion or another. But if he really knows how to do this at all, how could that happen, when we've interacted in the past. As Badger put it himself

so my JDness should have jumped right out at him, were it there at all. Some men, presented with the limits of their own knowledge and ability, accept them with good grace. Badger turned vengeful, doing so without even having been publicly embarassed. All that was needed was for him to be disagreed with in private, about a judgement call on somebody else's literary style.

Having had a spat with Badger for 3 years and counting I found those posts to be quite interesting. I (heart) seeing someone take him on...yeah I tried in the past and I sucked at it so I'm all smiles when someone else takes him on.

But that being said I want no further part in this mess....Observer's taken it to a whole new level and considering the level of psychois of the target...I'm getting the hell out of Dodge because when he comes back after the long weekend I expect this to get ugly.

Goodluck to everyone involved, also please remember what Memorial Day is really all about and take a minute or two to offer a thank you to the Men and Women who fought for all of us to have the right to do simple things like express our opinions and even have these petty flame wars.
