hello! my name is sebastian, and i'm here to have the best time of my life! just want to let it all go and break more of these shackles, ive been learning lots about myself these last weeks and the toughest thing about it has been how much i see i still have to go... life is such an ever ending learning process, feels like its time to just explode into a ball of light, maybe sparkle down on lots of other people to make them feel happy... that would be nice. a break of sorts. lets step through that mirror again, shall we?

one day i'll finally be able to organize some large art installation at burningman, but unfortunetly its not going to be this year ~sigh~ i'll have to contend with a humble deck of hand made tarot-ish cards for the burn; its tougher participating when you are only passing through the us of a for a week or two while sweeping through the desert one calls home.

i'm a wanderer, looking for home and a new higher purpose. send me a message and you'll be my friend for life.
;-)

am a little freaked out

Post by emHaustralie » Mon May 29, 2006 6:59 pm

Hi all, this i'm emma, from melbourne, australia. This is both my first BM and my first post on a discussion board (go the ultimate popping of cherry). BM for me, will be my entry into the world, of travel and (hopefully) some kind of enlightenment in regards to my art and my existence. Have to say, I am a little on the up-in-the-air side at the moment trying to organise my running away from home... which goes towards explaining... I wish I knew where to start (both in this sentence and in my journey). The rambling begins.

Hello Emma!
Welcome to the board, there are a lot of things you can learn from this place and from the main site, the best way to be prepared is to gain as much knowledge as possible. Self reliance is certainly a virtue, in the world of Burning Man but don’t be afraid to ask for help if you need it. There seems to be a large contingent of Australians coming this year some more than likely with experience in negotiating the logistics of travel and acquiring what you’ll need in the desert. Contact them threw the regional network.

Emma… not sure if your comment here is a metaphor for your first steps on your own outside of your home area, or if you are actually meaning that you are running away from home.

Either way (and most certainly in the case of the latter), there are lots of burners out there who will help you answer your questions and find direction. If you are thinking about running away, I'd urge you to stop and think about it really hard before taking such a step. Most times things are not as bad as they seem. But you know your own situation and should you choose to do such a thing, please walk with great care and make burner friends. We wouldn’t want you to go getting lost along the way to Black Rock City.

Incidentally, mystic just posted in this thread for the first time the other day and is from Brisbane (check about two pages back). And the regional contact for Burningman is in Melbourne. Check this link:

http://regionals.burningman.com/au.html

Take good care and hang around here. Good folks and good vibes in this place.

Cheers for the words of support. My statements re: running away from home were purely a metaphor for my first worldly steps. I've officially gained a case of wanderlust of late and need to make my way into the big wide world. Will definately get onto the regional board, cheers for the advice. Be round about the traps no doubt :)

ahhh wanderlust , im right there with ya on that one Em , i just recently returned from a trip to greece , just a helpful hint , if your looking to travel for as long as possible on little cash , this is what i do and it works out pretty well , volunteering for like wildlife and ecological agencies that desparetly need help , sometimes they give you room and board , or at least a place to stay for your efforts but most tell you upfront if they do , i've recently done this overseas and it was an all around good experience as well as giving you an easy way to travel , you might check out www.volunteerabroad.com they are a pretty cool site for hunting down volunteer opertunities , just select the country you want and it will give you loads of options , just an idea , i know it's def helped my travels become a little more attainable

Post by Shiva » Tue May 30, 2006 6:56 pm

Hello, just checkin' out the posting process etc...

I'm planning my first Burn this year and was wondering if I could get any advice on getting there with stuff (more than a suitcase or two) from Ohio and locating a Camp to join.

I'm reading and searching the website... didn't know if someone might expediate the consumption of information.

I know a bit about BRCity from some friends, but they all flew together one year and did little research before going. I want to be much better prepared.

Thanks

Hello Shiva, welcome aboard! Are you traveling to the desert be yourself or going with friends? The best thing to do is read the "survival guide" section (located under preperation). It might sound a little textbook, but you'll understand why once you get out into Black Rock. Mainthings: enough water/food for a week, any necessary medications/medicine for a week, sturdy shelter (strong tent w/ guylines if possible. Fun things: Bring items to "gift" if you want, but its not necessary, as your open minded, respectful, and hopefully humanitarian personality will be gift enough. Other than that, there is just some here's and there's you can pick up, as the event is exactily the amount of fun as you want to put into it. If you have questions, swing by "The Bar" thread (located under the Open Discussion topic) to chat with first timers and old timers alike. Love it, and hope to see you out in the dust. :D

Cheers for the details puzzlebox, got the site up at the mo and i'm giving it a squiz as I speak. I never realised how quickly/easily the need to move can take a hold. I'm feeling so dedicated to the prospect of perhaps not seeing 'home' for a prolongued period that it's beginning to scare me a bit. I don't know if it's a bit much to ask but i guess i'm kind of crossing fingers that BM will introduce me to a ready-made community of like-minded people that can at least give me possibilities for the beginning of the journey.

A girl can dream right? tehehe.

no problem Em , i was in the same place not to long ago , i began a similar venture last year , and i think you'll find once you get started , it's much much easier , in fact it's hard to stop , it's a little dificult your first like 2 days out but it's just a transition you'll make from one state of mind to the other and it will pass , at least as i have experienced it , mingling with like minded people is the best way to go though , just remember not to lose your momentum , thats the hardest one to get back , and remember to have fun , because theres allllways a way to make it happen when the time comes around.

Well, I am Xak and I am just from Texas not some far-off exotic location like Australia. This will be my first burn and I have been working on hordes of stuff to bring. I have associates that are coming also but I am camping away from them in my life pod tent. I do have a question though, when I arrive do I just wander around aimlessly until I find some group I think I would gel with, or do I find some vacant area(I plan on being there early) and say "I stake this claim" and hope that I gel with the people who crowd around me after? The one question I get from anyone whom I tell that I am going to BM is "Cool, What camp are you in?" I just kinda stare blankly at them and murmur I haven't a clue...

SO the big question is how do I get a clue?

Howdy Xak welcome to the BM community as far as camps lots of Burners coming from your area it is probably a good idea to hook up with them!
But to answer your question yes you can generally just stake a claim anywhere with a few exceptions. Registered theme camps will have reserved areas already staked out when you arrive and of course the roads etc are not for camping in, next to porta-potties probably not fun, center camp, etc.
And you will not get in earlier than Sunday at midnight unless you have a good reason and are on the early arrival list good reasons include being a member of a theme camp set up gang, volunteer for a BRC service such as ESD or DPW, etc.

The clue you are looking for might be here somewhere on Eplaya lots of Theme camps accepting members (insert Eplaya Bar Camp plug) but if your self reliant individual you can have just a good experience camping alone and enjoying your new neighbors as they arrive.

newbie hello

Post by sonickitty » Wed May 31, 2006 3:11 pm

Hi! I'm planning my first trip to BRC this summer and I joined the eplaya discussion board to help me in my research and exploration of the BM experience. I'm especially interested in finding a theme camp that I might be able to help out with this year. I want to be able to share my skills with the community as well as party and have a good time.
I just moved to San Francisco about 6 months ago and most of the events/parties I go to on the weekend are filled with BM participants. I'm super excited about my first time and I hope it will be as good as anticipated. I'm already having the time of my life since I moved to SF, so this might just be heaven that awaits me...
Thanks for reading.

Sonickitty you would be welcome at the Eplaya bar camp which is composed of a large group of Eplayan's with many very experienced burners and we have a subcamp of Vivacious vixen virgin burners so you would have a whole bunch of female virgin burners for support and to enjoy the experience with.
Also a lot of us are from the City and surrounding Bay Area.
If you looking to stay with a real cool group of peep's check us out.

hello~! my name is Gala & this year is going to be my first burn. i have been wanting to go for about three years & finally the time has come. it does, ov course, help that my pseudo-husband went last year, before i knew him :D
we will be journeying over from Auckland, New Zealand, attending BM, then checking out San Francisco, Las Vegas, Seattle, New York, London & Bangkok before landing in Melbourne & establishing an incredible new life. exciting times ahoy!

i like pogo sticks, plastic crowns, fake meat, dada & surrealism, carousels, dressing up, playing Scrabble, kissing, typewriters & peppermint tea. i dislike pointless arguments, dishonest taxi drivers, pessimism & shoes that are too small. my favourite authors are Anais Nin, Henry Miller, Haruki Murakami, Charles Bukowski, Hunter S Thompson & Roald Dahl. my musical tastes run from Legendary Pink Dots to Ludacris, Deutsch Nepal to Fiona Apple, Chopin to Venetian Snares.

i am really, really, reeeeeeeally looking forward to experiencing BRC & meeting some new people~!

also, behold~ a picture ov me & my toilet! glamorous: c'est moi. point being, if you see me on the playa, come & say HELLO!

Hello I am vixen.... this will be my first BM, although I have been to some
regional BM-type of events in the past. My husband is going with me (long-time Deadhead) and we are really excited about the whole thing.

We have three children, that we are leaving at home because we need
grown-up playtime. Our RV will come too, even though that's cheating a bit. My husband has renamed her, "Mother Trucker" in honor of her first burn. The tie dye curtains will give her away on the playa. My husband likes to make things, sometimes odd things. I enjoy art--especially photography and body painting. We're seasoned desert campers, and teach classes to kids in outdoor survival.

We have found a core group of burners here in San Diego who are awesome. Slowly we are making new friends and networking in preparation for BM, and truly, a new lifestyle.

I'm done with pretending to be something I'm not.
I am ready to find the questions in life, instead of the answers.
I want to learn, explore, discover, create and see for myself instead
of being told what to do.

I don't know if I'll ever be truly ready, but I'm ready to try.

Hey Gala. Hey Vixen!

Welcome Home!!
Gala, thanks for your mini bio. I too am into Dadaism and Surrealism. I am also a fan of T. Bosch. I'm on my 10th HST book (Curse of Lono). I look forward to meeting you and hearing of your journey into oblivion. I think the toilet is an excellent backdrop. Your eyes are very expressive. Excellent.

This will be my 4th burn. I will be bringing a virgin with me.
Vixen, you will have a great time. I only wish I could see the look on your face as you enter BRC. Just the journey alone will be a great experience. Many people in the default world have profitted from my experience at BRC.

To all my fellow burners, let the dreams begin!!!!

Love and Peace,
L'Orgasm
BOOBIES!!!

Vixxen - bringing an RV is not cheating - they allow long time burners like me to survive the playa year after year and still long for more. Part of the art for me is providing meals for a alarge group of people. The RV allows me to do a far better job of that.

We take some extra care to decorate our camp to eliminate some of the RVishness.

Only RVer's think it is not cheating...

cheat cheat cheat....

But once I go in one and enjoy the luxury I will be on the RVer side.

If the event got too big though I think it would be the best way to reduce population just ban RV's! and no entrance after wednesday.

It would bring the event to a more commited core group real quick!

Oh? I'll stack my level of preparation and commitment up against most.

I have a great collage with photos of the RV on a tow truck, stuck at Donner Pass, broken down in the desert with legs coming out from underneath, etc.

Not questioning anyones commitment! Just my humble opinion on a way to reduce population and spectators. If someone can just load up the RV and pull in for the weekend versus preparing to really camp for a week without the luxury of a RV I think there would be less spectators.

But I admit if I ever could afford a big fancy RV I would probably love the comfort it would provide.

We've already arranged to transport 6-7 people and their gear to BM
this year in our cheat-wagon RV. Maybe that makes up for our lack of roughin it...lol Actually we've camped in the desert in tents for years, and last year my parents gifted us this used RV and we couldn't say no. My husband has had several back surgeries, so the more comfie bed will help him enjoy the week more too. People can say what they will, but anyone who wants to come hang out is always welcome at our door.
