call for musicians/dancers, virtual collab, desert jam comp

Post by jkrasnow » Sun Jun 04, 2006 10:07 pm

greetings everyone from lovely cleveland, ohio!

am part of a camp which will be in the alternative energy zone and am calling select musicians and dancers who may be interested in collaborating virtually prior to the burning man event on a couple of extended semi-improvisational compositions/jams to perform there.

i play a number of instruments, including lap steel which i may bring wrapped in saran to protect from playa dust!

there are some examples from my duo on my web sites below that suggest the kind of sound and form i would hope to project and expand with some of you, as there may be such a large pool of you to draw from!

influences would be north african (desert/gnawa) to asia minor, desert music, with some prog rock and blues impurities and evolutions. am not a dj or techno type but those of you who are would probably be most receptive to this if you are into transglobal underground and are sensitive to not steamrolling everything with a 4/4 meter.

belly, flamenco, and kathak-type dancers most welcome.

favored percussionists would be more rattles and jingles than hand drums, and do not want to turn this into just another drum jam--larger, more resonant and flexible drums would be favored in special circumstances over the more commonplace congas, bongos, and darbukas unless you really specialize in the latter types.

favored wind players would be eastern double-reed players conversant w/ western and eastern systems (eg, pungi, nagaswaram/shenai, zurla, etc).

keyboard: non-vibrato drawbar organ sound.

strings: struck or plucked--specialists/unique instruments preferred.

in all non-perc cases, modal improvisation is paramount. in all cases, additive, pulsating patterns that flow beyond simple patterns are also central to the idea of this music.

we can work with charts and would be happy to provide notation--you may contact me with musical ideas that i may subsequently weave into the piece--again the whole point is that your ideas can be sifted and given the attention they deserve so that we may end up with, not a chain-letter or patchwork equivalent, but...a new, living, musical organism, and still leave things open to chance for the actual performance.

the ultimate choice will be based on my own subjective criteria and is not a reflection of your qualifications--apologies if this sound unspontaneous or undemocratic, but in fact i look forward to making good acquaintances with you prior to the actual event when we all may have to ward off the elements--feel free to post your sites, links to your music, or email small sound attachments as interested--
