Tips for On Playa Craft Projects
Okay, this year I'm finally going to run a craft project on the playa. I'm going to have people decorate picture frames with excess schwag so that they have a special frame to put a burning man photo into.
I spent some of yesterday at thistothat.com to figure out what glues to bring and I decided that I wasn't going to bring epoxy (too much trouble) or spray glue (dust and wind and spray glue eek!) but I have started to make a little chart so that I'll have some on playa reference.
Zule has noted that a canvas tarp under the work area would help with the moop factor. I'm also providing small trays as work areas.
Does anyone know of good garbage cans? I.E. solid lids that don't come off? and room to put small things in? I've been to a couple of hardware stores and not seen anything. My best bet might be sharps containers.
Use magnets to pick up small pieces of metal before they become moop.
I know that there's lots more, but I dont' know what it is.
Any tips?

I think something like this might work for you. Even if it gets knocked over the lid doesn't come off so you won't be chasing MOOP over half the playa.

I was thinking of something smaller. IN part so it doesn't attract others' moop, and also so that useful scraps didn't get thrown out. (nothing like assemblage to make all scraps "useful.")
Thanks for the thought though.
Although I might transfer small stuff to a big bag to take home.

Goop, Barges, E-6000, white
And blue tape to hold things while they set and people travel.
I have some colored leather, some rocks, some glass, some beads, and some scrapbook embellishments to add to the mix. PLus whatever I run into between now and then.

I'd just tie heavy duty trash bags or grocery bags (inspect for holes first) to a wood frame of some sort. Any sort of trash can that relies on the user to lock it after use is a bad idea. People will leave it open thinking there won't be a wind gust while they're working, they'll forget to close it or not close it properly when they leave, etc.

We use 3 large cans in our camp. BUT we place a large brink in 1st to hold it down..capjbadger wrote:I think something like this might work for you. Even if it gets knocked over the lid doesn't come off so you won't be chasing MOOP over half the playa.

If you have access to electricity, hot glue would hold pieces until the base glue dries. I don't suggest hot glue alone as it fails when the temp gets too high if the piece is hung near a heat source or stored in a car trunk, etc...

Instead of just plain elmers white, I'd suggest "Mighty Tacky"- it's a white PVC glue similar to elmers, but in my experience holds a lot better. It's also alot more expensive....theCryptofishist wrote:Goop, Barges, E-6000, white
Okay, second thought- bring elmers to the playa and use Mighty Tacky at home.

I'd leave the beads at home. Too much chance of a MOOPacious shower happening if someone sends the tray flying, for whatever reason.
Try shells instead; they're potentially MOOPacious too but larger than beads and thus easier to pick up. And IMO, look eminently cooler.

I would suggest not bringing any glue that is quick dry, which is probably obvious. I had a bit of trouble with the Yes paste (which wasn't quick dry) I brought last year to glue things into the memorial book for Nipples. Thankfully I could add water to the glue so that I didn't dry out completly. But by the time I had the glue spread out on the pages it was almost dry.
In addition to tape for temp-holding glued items, I'd also suggest bringing some spring clamps. (Available in multipacks for a couple bucks.) I use 'em A LOT, especially when GOOPing things.
Maybe if you can rustle up a CLEAR container for scrap, people can visually inspect the contents without having to open it every time. And for just plain trash, maybe a container with a lid that has a sphincter... (EWWWW!)...Just a smaller, flexible opening to reduce MOOP Escape Factor.

Good idea, but I gave up working with shell because of sustainable harvest issues. Plus they have a tendency to break in my experience. I'm not bringing seed beads as I hate them anyway, but I'll look mine over before I pack with that in mine.diane o'thirst wrote: Try shells instead;
