Newbi Q - bread
How does bread hold up on the playa? Do you need to keep it iced or will it be okay for a week in its bag....?
Thanks
Thanks
Bread sealed last a few days long, but once you open it it drys out so fast. Ice chest don't work well.( for me they didn't) But a reefer will help out.. Reefer as in a Motorhome. We also had some luck with sealing frenchbread as it has a thicker crust.. Maybe someone eles has a few Ideas..
Good question..

Hi, Michael,
I can't tell you how many loaves of bread I've seen on someone's dash on the playa. The plastic wrapper is swelled up like a balloon and totally coated with water droplets on the inside.
I've kept hamburger buns for a few days in the ice chest, but I wouldn't bet my life on longer than a few days.
It's fairly easy to make bannock on the playa - that's a kind of fried bread (think like a pancake only with bread mix). google bannock and try it before you hit the playa. Lots of recipes.

Bread freezes well. If you have the room, putting bread in the dry-ice cooler will keep it well and keep it from getting moldy. But flat breads like pita and tortilla will work much better than conventional sliced bread.
Or you can mix 3 parts playa dust a 1 part water, shape into cakes, place on a flat surface and you can have some very crunchy biscuits in under an hour.

geekster brings up a good point about tortilla's.
If you buy them in the right size package and use them up when you open them..Buy as many packages as you need. We bring up both the 12 count ans 30 count size...

Louise and I mix the dry ingredients into a baggie (we use powdered milk, so we add that powder, too), and label each baggie. Then all we have to do on the playa is pour a measured amount of water into the baggie, mix, and plop the dough out onto the griddle to cook. We have regular flour bread, corn bread, and whatever. And I'm searching "bannock" too.
I recommend trying this at home to get the proper portions for your griddle size. Because it's quicker than baking bread, we sometimes have bannock for meals, if I decide I want a bread with my soup or pasta.

For several years we have brought a couple of bags of Sara Lee mini bagels. We just leave them in the bag sealed up. They do not get hard like Noahs' bagels do after a couple of days. We do not freeze them. On Saturday morning we serve Lox, cream cheese, onions and bagels to everyone who comes by. They have always been fresh by the weekend. I do attempt to get them just before we leave and I always check the pull dates.
Those who think they can and those who think they can't are both right.
