(Lorgazm jumps on soap box)

Hi.
I'm a college student. Please hold your applause. This is my final semester. Past 3 times I've gone to the burn I've had noooo problem as far as school goes. It was stressful at times but oh so worth it.

Yes, the timing sucks. However, its just another sacrifice to be made. The fall semester usually starts mid August. First day of class, I stay after class. I go right up to the teacher, slowly remove my blouse...oops...forget that...where was I. Oh yes, I introduce myself then I let them know of my plans. I even show them the ticket. Many of them have been fascinated (and jealous) about my trip. I tell them that I will make up for any missed assignments. They (the professors) were grateful that I let them know of my plans and all went well. I passed many of those classes with A's.

It can be done.

Hey I love the view I'm getting on this soapbox. I feel so tall!

See you soon!
XOXOX,
Lorgazm

I'm a fish and my school is scheduled for it's annual netting and gutting on August 31, so I can't make it to the burn. Besides, the desert is just to dry. May I recommend that we hold it besides the underwater fumeroles so it's more convienient, at least during El Nino years?

sisenor wrote:So the issue (you're saying) is if the event was accessible to students then other people would have to take a couple days off. I can't imagine it would be that big of a deal to the people for whom BM is such a big part of their year. I can say for myself that I'd want more than a day cushion before and after so what's the issue? It's not going to be taken over by college students but I really don't know. But the snobbish remark I got is what pissed me off.
*shrug* It's a trade-off. Some people are more able to go, others less so. If the dates were moved the positions would be reversed and folks with jobs would be put out. I'm pretty sure it wasn't set up that way to discourage *anyone*.

I live close enough to the playa that I don't need the extra day of travel time. But there are plenty others out there who do. Folks who drive down from Vancouver, or Detroit, or New York.

All the same I'm grateful for that extra time just because I don't get that much time off from work. I spend a week's worth of my pto on the playa, a couple weeks going home for Xmas, and I'm left with one whole week of sick time or other vacation for the whole year. Tain't much. Most of the non-student world doesn't get a block of time off for the holidays, or in the middle of spring, or all summer. We've got to sacrifice for it. It may be inconvenient for you, but you can make your own sacrifices to get around it, so deal.

You want sympathy for your plight, you can get that here. You want helpful suggestions or tips to make things easier for you, you can get that here. You want to just bitch about things... you're going to get snarky responses. (except in the 'Fuck' thread, which is made for that kinda shit)

That said, I hope you find a way to make it out there and have an awesome Burn.

K IV,

You are so right. That is why I bought the DVD with 2 corkscrews and box of baby wipes.

Anyways, the DVD has since been confiscated by some strange men in white coats for "research purposes".

Peace,

mdm, Jewel*** carries your Picture around her neck. So she took it off and set it in a chair. The funny thing was she kept tossing popcorn at you expecting you to catch it in your mouth...( I think she drank to much ginger ale) So anywho mdm, you were with us in cartoon form... We hope to see you b-4 65 days, maybe 58-59 days??

Four Weeks of Burning Man- Coming Soon

Post by gyre » Sat Jul 08, 2006 3:13 pm

Burning Man should last a month so folks who can't fit one week in can come on the next.
I think the total at any one time would be less, but a larger overall group would get to go.
From where I have to travel, a week is way too short!
I'm not alone in this. A lot of people further away would travel for a longer burn. The big thing for me is travel time and travel expense.
I felt like as soon as I got settled in, it was time to go.
I want to see the rest of the art.
I want to go back and visit this camp and that camp.
I want to see the evil vending machine spend a month in a box, not a week.
Did anybody get to see everything they wanted to see in a week?
"Everything is more wonderful when you do it with a car, don't you think?"
-girl by the fire, watching a tree moved by car bumper in the bonfire

It would be a shame if I had to resort to self-deception to preserve my faith in objective reality.

That might help explain the motivation for returning again....knowing you haven't seen it all, experienced everything, and met all the fine people.

Like visiting a very tiny town or village, where you can do it all in one day, what is the likelyhood of returning? Less than something bigger.

What would BurningMan be like if it was all summer long......Maybe turn into something like WallyWorld??

It is what it is. Come and enjoy. Welcome Home

You should've been there the second week...

Post by gyre » Mon Jul 10, 2006 2:24 pm

I think everything would still change day to day and week to week.
It could never be possible to see and do everything, but it might be more relaxed doing it.
I think the people whose schedules might fit only at one point, that are serious about coming would really add to the mix.

Do you really think you could get bored in a week and a half?
If so, you could still leave after a week.

I want more.
If I start getting bored, I'll find a place to sit down, get a margarita and enjoy the madness.
There's always more.
That's what more means.

I like the fleeting emphereal nature of the event. More is not always better. If I wanted more I'd find a way to be there earlier and help set up.

sooo many already

Post by madmatt » Tue Jul 11, 2006 1:43 pm

Soooooo many tourists already come to Black Rock, can you even imagine what it would be like if BM were held at a convenient time?

What if the tickets were only $25 (plus $50 for Ticketbastard)?

What if it were at Coachella instead of at Black Rock, wouldn't that be more convenient?

Most of my friends "can't go" because they can't take the time off, or it's too expensive, or too much trouble, yada yada yada. You're left with people who really want to be there and are willing to go to (sometimes extreme) measures to be there.

The Five Weeks of Burning Man

Post by gyre » Wed Jul 12, 2006 9:57 am

The man should burn at the end of the event.

I'm not suggesting it be too easy. It's already relatively painless if you're on the west coast. I travel thousands of miles. I could stay two weeks for very little extra cost over one week. I want us to enjoy the huge effort everyone has gone to, and I think a week is too short.

Wouldn't it be great if more people on the east coast could justify bigger projects, considering the enormous travel expense? I'd love to do a large art car, but for one week? It's very hard to manage.
There's more creativity out there to be enjoyed.

And if I can manage, I will be there early.
