ID

Post by pbmaniac2000 » Tue Jun 27, 2006 6:27 pm

I have a few questions about having your id on the playa. The first is how often do you need it? I know I will need it to drink, but i don't feel super safe carrying it around all the time. Most of the time i'm not wearing clothes that have pockets in them either. Do people check them all the time when you are drinking?

I've never carried mine and never been asked for it on playa. Now I suppose I've cursed myself...

Yeah, except for the fact that I am 21. So I am always asked for my id, "just to be sure."

I've never been asked for my ID. I'm 59, so I've never looked young enough for it to be an issue at Burning Man. I never drink in places that I don't know the bartender.

I would expect an ID to be helpful in other circumstances, though - they find me unconscious on the playa for whatever reason. The cops cuff me for no reason, beat the crap out of me, then charge me with resisting arrest, and I need ID to make bail and get medical treatment. You never know.

If you're not happy with an ID holder that fits on your shoelaces, consider a lanyard style holder that has a waterproof case for your drivers license and medical card.

I'm printing out little business cards to tuck into all my things; sort of ID cards for stuff. So if my stuff is on me, I have a type of identification. But no, we lock our wallets in the vehicles.

Question: Can I just photo copy my ID and laminate it? I really hate carrying around my "plastic" on the playa.

No, you don't have to. But I think with the drinking age being more stringently enfored it has become an issue for some. It is a good idea to have some form of ID, if nothing else your camp address in sharpy on your arm if you're inclined to pass out in odd places.

I'm leaning toward homemade unofficial ID to carry around on the playa in case of an emergency. That way I'm able to have not only my real info, but my playa name and addy as well. Losing things happens out there. My state ID is replaceable enough, but losing my military ID would suck enormously as it is tied to my medical care.

Hey Anti M

I can relate to the "passing out" crowd. Not that it has happened to me.. No, really. I have, however, come across a a poor wandering soul (on the verge). She didn't know her address. It was cold and dark and the middle of nowhere. I felt so bad. A friend who was with our tribe was able to assist this woman. I just shudder to think what would have happened where we not there.

So very good idea having some sort of BRC ID with you at best.

Peace and Love,
Lorgazm

One morning we had a very drunk kid who'd injured himself pretty badly falling off a bike brought to our camp (they knew we had a ranger althouhg he wasn't in at the time). We talked him into getting on our rhoadescar and Larry took him to medical, but we never figured out his name or where he belonged.

Ah, reminds me of shore patrol ... except the young sailors had their name and ship right there on their uniform.

For what it's worth, a laminated ID from the Genital Portrait Studio works perfectly fine for an ID at Barbie Death Camp & Wine Bistro. Our attitude is anybody that would put a picture of their crotch on an ID is old enough to drink our wine.

LOL! What if the face and genitals don't match? Imagine a hairy, apparent male, with a picture of a vulva around their neck. Or a trim little lady with a picture of a 12" trouser snake around their neck. Now while either case might be sexy as hell, would it be ID? ;)

Ron

PS As a former producer of sex videos I just couldn't get myself to let anyone take a picture of my pee pee without all the needed releases. So, despite many walks past and picture wearing friends I've never had my picture taken at the Genital Studio. Silly, eh?

Personal cards with playa name and address (with a BRC map showing our village location) on one side ... real name and email address on the other. We wear one around our necks and zip tie them to things we might lose like bikes, camel backs, costume stuff. Nothing special, just a photoshopped image copied to illustrator for alignment and printed on the cheap perforated biz card sheets. Print one side then flip it over and print the other side. Lamination recommended but optional.

We carry around enough extras to give out to burners we'd like to keep in touch with off playa. Haven't passed out and needed to be returned to camp or lost anything with an ID on it so the jury is still out on how effective they are. Seems like a good idea though.

If you have a will-call ticket, you'll need ID to get in.

If you plan on drinking, you'll have more choice of where to drink if you have your ID with you. Without it, you'll likely be able to get your drink on but may have to try a few different places first. There are stories going around about playa bars getting busted for serving underage people and some have started carding for their own protection. If you bring your own stuff to drink it's a non-issue.

You will need a pocket or water carrying device of some sort if you wander far from camp anyway... how about coming up with some sort of purse-like thing to hold a water bottle with a small zipped compartment for your ID?

Well I am a special fx make up artist, and have worked on countless hollywood movies. Most recently the new texas chainsaw masacre, and before that the hills have eyes. So i have quite a bit of make up experience. I just don't think there is enough make up in the world to make someone look like that. lol. j/k. I think I am just going to go with the copy idea. I will also put my playa address on that as well.

If you're young enough (or look it) that someone may think you look under 21, they are supposed to ask you for ID (whether or not that always happens is another thing).

If the BLM busts a bartender for serving a minor on the playa, it's the same as it is in any other city. Saying that they checked and the person had a photocopy of an ID on them won't get them out of trouble.

As I see it, if a bartender's going to care about checking ID, they're going to care enough not to let you show a laminated copy of an ID. My advice is to stick your ID in a clear plastic sleeve or mini-sheet protector (office max sells 'em), then tether that to something you're going to be wearing/carrying that has a pocket (hydration pack, belt, etc). Make sure that you also stick a playa ID on the back - like mentioned above, something that's got your camp name/location on it. If for some reason you somehow get separated from your ID, it will most likely get back to you either at the event or after (someone would either drop it at your camp or mail it to the address on the ID when they get home).

A discussion similar to this one a couple of years back inspired me to start making "playatags", hand-stamped aluminum pendants with the name or playaname and camp of the recipient on 'em...I got pretty used to making them, and plan to continue this year so ask me for one if you see me out there. Variations on these would be great gifts if you're looking for something to gift- It's practical AND individualized. I try to carry the makings for tags around with me, so that I can create them on the spot. Unfortunately for me, that means carrying a small anvil....But they could be hand-drawn, or punched into leather, or (infinity).
As for carrying "real" ID, make sure that you do if you take the bus into town. (AND your ticket stub!)

They won't sell you a bus ticket aka wristband if you don't have your stub. No stub, no bus ride.

Another trick for carrying it, if you chose to:
I realized last year that I had no pockets on most of my playawear so I made myself a pocketbelt that would go over/under whatever I happened to be wearing that day. Can't find any photos of it, but here's what I did: Took an old pair of pants and cut out just the waistband with the pockets intact. Without the front of the pants the pockets were just white cotton so I tie-dyed them with sharpies. Supercute, much less bulky than a fanny pack, and ready to button on whenever I needed it!
Teh mother of invention

Speaking of pocket belts, drop by

and see photos of some _really_ great pockets that dangle from belts made from gorgeous materials by amacker. She made one for Louise that's truly a work of art.

If I were you I'd forgo the ID/licesne especially if you'll be naked a good part of the time. Maybe just take your ATM and when you saunter up to a neighborhood bar have the bartender swip your ATM down the crack of our ass. It'd make for some fine entertainment and you'd probably drink free for a few hours.
