Hi first timer this year. Will a regular longboard with standard wheels work in the playa or do you need bigger wheels? Any ideas or thoughts would be great.

It all depends on what the surface is like this year. The city site was underwater a few weeks ago, this may mean a firmer surface in September (or not). If it is firm, regular roller blades work (tho' the Playa is hell on bearings). If it is soft, bikes have serious issues. Most years, there are regions where wheeled thingies work well. Also the city streets (regardless of what the rest of the Playa is like) get chewed up very quickly.

For general transportation bring a bike ! I think you would be rather frustrated trying to board your way around BRC. Longboards aren't so much fun to carry and there's sooo much to see.
Imagine of you will ............ round squares..... Not spherical cubes.............But round squares.
