Hi Burners - Just letting you know that I am going through the process of getting permission to burn a man at VISIONZ festival this new years. www.visionz.org.nz. Planning to burn a 10ft high man, maybe with fireworks c/- Honest Joe. I need your help to make this happen, even if it is just moral/ideas support on this thread (thank you Honest Joe!! ). I have to write a bit of a proposal to say exactly what I want to do so that they can formally decide if its okay - they are positive thus far... Hope you guys can register your interest and if possible come to Visionz to help make the event an burning event!

Watch this space for more info as I go through the process of getting permission to stage the first ever regionals BURN in NZ!!! Whoo whooo!

I have got in touch with some of my new zealand mates and they are all going to alpine unity. I still want to help burn the man but I will probably be going to alpine unity. I will start planing some simple (and safe) fireworks and get hold of some information for how to fire it. I may even be able to get hold of a licenced operator to come and help you! I know of a man who builds fire sculptures and he may be interested in helping you too.

I landed in NZ at 5am after 3 days straight travel and after ten hours in NZ I was invited to a rave that night. so don't expect much from me in the next few days!

Are visions offering you any money to help pay your costs or are you looking for the free options? both are cool. I'm sure I can find something for free, love always goes farther than money....

PS are you sure you don't want to go to alpine unity?

Hi Honest Joe - Good to hear from you and welcome to NZ! Thanks for the thoughts. Boy I would love to be going to Alpine Unity now that I know you and Kyla from this thread are prob going to be there. I just wish I had heard about it before I bought the Visionz tickets. I guess I have to stick with Visionz as tickets are non-refundable. Don't get me wrong, Visionz is a fabulous festival, its just that NZ Burners are few and far between. Could you possibly make Visionz?

In my following post I will include my permission-seeking letter to the Visionz people, and if poss the diagram of the man I am making. He wil burn at the tribal zone firepit.

Dear Visionz,

Proposal to Stage the First Regional Burning Man Event in New Zealand at Visionz Festival

I am writing to formally request permission to stage the first Regional Burning Man Event in New Zealand at Visionz 2003. I am officially the New Zealand regional representative for the Burning Man festival, a huge festival of radical arts/radical self expression held in the deserts of northern Nevada every year. The event culminates in the burning of a huge (now 80 ft high) wooden man. I am now a veteran of 8 Burning Mans, as I lived in Nevada in the 90s, and also have attended three burns since moving back to New Zealand (I continue work in the USA frequently). As part of the developing Burning Man network, Regional representatives (“Regionals”) are now established in most of the states of the USA, and in many countries around the world. Burning Man encompasses all that is good in the way of art, counter-culture and freedom of expression in the USA. It is certainly the right part of US culture to be bringing to an event like Visionz, which similarly represents our culture in New Zealand.

With that in mind I wish to stage an event at Visionz that is somewhat similar to Regional events held in other parts of the world. In short, I would like to burn a mini-Burning Man at Visionz on one of the nights around the middle of the festival. The man I propose to burn will not be 80 ft high but a maximum 10 ft high. The sketch below illustrates the man I propose to burn. It will be made of wood and at this stage I am not sure how elaborate it will be. This depends on how much time I have to make it! The man would stand where Visionz management think that it should be burned (I suggest beside the fire pit of the Tribal Zone), and would be perhaps adorned with illustrations and brief descriptions of the actual Burning Man event. At the time of the burn I would make a brief explanation of the significance of the Burning Man, soak the base of the man with some kind of accelerant (kerosine would most appropriate) and light it. Once fully burned out I would remove all non-combustables (nails, screws) and remove the ash if necessary.

I would greatly appreciate being granted permission to stage this event. It will be a spectacle, would bring Burning Man to New Zealand for the first time, and help to forge a link between the similar cultures that make up the Burning Man and Visionz festivals.

Hi there NZburners - don't know if you have heard the news, but Alpine Unity festival is probably going to be canned for good. The organisers have been busted as part of a big drug ring. Was in the papers this morning. So I hope you haven't already bought an AU ticket, or onsold it before all this happened. Please use the money to come to Visionz! Visionz is now THE Burning Man regional venue. A 12 ft man is now largely built, and the plans are to burn it on New Years eve, preceded by a belly/fire drum&dance procession through the festival. So the plans are happening, and the excitement is building!!! Would be great to have you part of this process!!

Our event is now listed on the Visionz website www.visionz.org.nz and will be distributing information at the event.

My wife and I (virgin burn-wedding!)came from auckland and, yes ,its a mission ,but the payback is so amazing that its worth every hard saved cent,and time spent planning, and once you've been ,its not so hard to plan for more interactive aspects,and collaborations,rather than being in quite a functional mindset.Coming from Aussie would be about the same logistically as NZ i guess,and I think you should treat yourself to some comforts for your first burn.We had a little rv,the smallest you could get almost,and it rocked.We had a fridge,cooker, beds for 4 !and a shower and toilet that we never used...icy chilled fruit/beer/chocolate/salmon any timeyou like...just think about it......We flew nz-lax-sf and couchsurfed for a week with some friends of friends who looked after us, gearing-up and having a good time.Rented RV in San Leandro(Bay area) and drove via reno.DONT STOP AT ANY MALLS TO GET "LAST MINUTE SUPPLIES"in reno,you'll be stumbling around like a fool,lost, or just waiting to pay ,for obsene lengths of time.just get stuff in a supermarket in S.F.and bugger the extra gas money...
All in all it was amazing,the best time i've ever had and were goin again next year so come along ,be part of the beautiful madness!

Finally a chance to write you all a quick note to tell you how the first NZ regional event went down. It was successful, and well beyond my expectations. Onthe evening of 1 Jan 2004 I ran a procession from the tribal zone of Visionz festival through the festival, passing by all the zones and through part of the general camping area. Started out with about 10 to 20 participants (mainly drummers and belly dancers), but ended up with about 300-400 people by the time we reached the man. At that stage we formed a circle of sound and light around the man (a lot of fire dancers had joined the procession). I then lit the torch, ran madly around the man a few times, and then lit the man. It went up a little slower than expected (will use different accelerants next time) but eventually burned to the ground. The energy of the event and its scale reminded me of the first burning man I ever went to, back in '94, so I guess I felt like I had come full circle by organising this one and having it go so well. Now that I know that burning man can be embraced by NZers, I will put more of an effort into the next burn at Visionz. I hope that you kiwi burners and visitors from Burning familes overseas will join with us at the next burn. Look for pics of the NZ burn on the www.burningman.com homepage inthe next week or so.

Next years burn will be at Visionz again. I will build a man that is at least 20 ft high (last one was 12 ft) and probably make it from driftwood. Would be good to get help from all who can offer it. Geographical separation is the problem, with most of you burners being in Auckland. Perhaps you could each make some key part of the man to bring together at Visionz, and help with the construction and preparation at the site. This time it was just a man up on a pile of logs inthe middle of a field, but in the next burn it could have a lamplit pathway etc. Lots of scope if you can help.

If any of you can leave your email here I will send some pics of the burn.

We'll almost certainly be going again this coming year, but with the bunch of Aussies we normally hang out with (they're nice, really, truely, honest). Probably it will be the last thing we do before packing up the house and kids and heading on our way back to NZ.

But yes we should organise some sort of get together there ....

Hey all, another virgin heading over in August '04. Never thought I'd be able to go but things have happened and then $999 return to SF!

I'd love to hook up with some kiwis over there, and hopefully meet a couple of experienced burners here before I go. Anytime someone is coming down Arrowtown/Queenstown way...

I'm going with a couple friends from Phoenix, it'll be their first burn too so you know, advice and all that!

Not sure about the Theme camp for myself, I figure take in as much as I can this year and learn for next! After all it doesn't sound like anybody goes just once...

However, I would love to catch up with as many fellow Kiwis as I can while I'm there. Maybe one of our seasoned burners can tell us the best way to find each other/

i wasn't serious about the theme camp

i too will be coming this year to learn, if I'm involved in a camp of my own (shared) design it will be next year.

for this year I'm hooking up with the Pinky's camp, I have a friend there. All are welcome to visit.

Hmm... gotta start thinking about a costume. Is (fake) fur too hot during the day? I guess it's ok at night.

Yonder, where are you camping this year? I think I'll be with Irrational Geographic again, but not sure what our plans are this time around. I know that we're definitely not taking our billboards again (two years was enough).

It's so exciting to see more Kiwis going this year! I definitely think a party or gathering should be organised. I am keen. Let's do it!

hi to all kiwi burners and anyone else out there
i'm a virgin (well figuritivly speaking) last week i discoverd bm and havent been off this site in 7 days (a bit obsessed actualy)my kid cant get me off the computer (shoe on the other foot stuff)
anyway i live on waiheke island a sort of micro culture not unlike burnig man eccept we cant lite big fires lol. i'm planing to go to bm and then do an extended 3 month journey around the us
ive just heard airnz are launching a service to sanfran $1,000 return out in april so going to check it out tommorw
i havent got bm ticklet yet but its my next step
kiwi virgins camp sounds cool who knows we build big fuckoff dome tent (saw details on one of the linked sites not that hard to build )
anyway its early days so lets see what tommorow brings
