According to the article, "simply toss the folded-up tent in the air, and by the time it hits the ground, it's pitched." (It springs open when released, if you aren't looking at the illustration in the URL above.)
I'm not sure it would even hit the ground on many days at Black Rock. :->

Coolies, new showers at Sulphur! When you toss that thing in the air by the time it does hit the ground it should be 50 miles downrange....Wow, just think. I can stop along Jungo and have a place to take a shower before arriving on playa!phil wrote:http://blog.scifi.com/tech/archives/200 ... nt_pi.html

I had one of the pop-up tents. It was easy to open. My problem was trying to put it back. I am short, so I had problems trying to get the tent folded back into the circle (mine was large), and in the bag. Only used it a few times at the Oregon coast. Went to use it last year when it splintered. I knew it would not make it at Burningman, so never even tried to take it there. My opinion: Not worth the money, even if it is cheap.

I brought a in-sta tent last year. Cheap one from Harbor fright. Used it for sleeping only. Kept the mat and sleeping bag fairly dust free. It sweat during the night. So had to air it out when the wind was down. Can't get down on the ground this year. (old&stif) No other problems.
I'm the contraptioneer your mother warned you about.
