What does a poor guy do?

Ya gotta follow your fucking heart K. If the stability is important to you stay. If you want to broaden your horizons go.

I guess the real question is ... what is that 5k really worth to you?

I haven't used this in awhile but a long time ago I learned about using a decision matrix to help make complex decisions. You've probably already seen this but here's how it works: make a list of all the things that will be affected by your decision. Assign a weight (1-10, 1-100, whatever) to each as to how important that item is to you. Then for each choice (KC or SF), assign a value to the outcome, maybe a -5 through +5 scale. Multiply each outcome value with the criteria weight and then total those values for each decision.

If you get a landslide difference then it's pretty clear what you should do. If you're like me you'll get similar total outcomes which is exactly why this is such a hard decision to make. :-)

i read somewhere recently (probably here) that a person asking for advice uisually arleady knows the answer, but that the answer isn't what they want.

it's kinda hippy dippy, but it also makes sense...

Yeah, I know the answer. I don't fucking like it. Take the fucking money and run. Job Security. Stability. It's the logical thing to do, but it does nothing for the spirit. I'll take Alpha's suggestion and try the Plus / Delta approach. This was becoming a clean decision until Sprint tossed that fucking King Kong sized monkey wrench into the mix.

In the grand scheme of things $5k is not much money. Also, how about visiting San Fran for a week or two so that you know what you'd be getting yourself into?

SF Burners: how about a "take Kinetic to work day" ?? :-)

And at least in CA, bonuses are taxed at close to 50%. Is $2500 such a
big wrench?

I'm getting a fucking bonus this year. Dunno how big it'll be. Makes no
difference whatsoever in my job satisfaction.

What I really need is a very long fuck, One where you totally expend all your energy taking care of anything and everything she ever wanted you to do, then have her turn that energy back on you until both of you are totally spent and you fall into the deepest sleep holding each other. You wake up to her kissing you and then your at it again, 2, 3, 4 times before getting up and eating something, only to find yourself going at it again.

This is true to an extent. The hardest question is Why. Why do you want to move? I moved because I wanted to be close to mountains. The move did change my life, but it didn't change me. It's a sublte bu important distinction.

I think it was Precip that called it "pulling a geographic". It doesn't work.
Rather than go into it here, I'm going to let this simmer a bit. Sprint is about to implode, and it might make some decisions crystal clear for me. The next 2-3 weeks will be very telling. Again, the feedback is very helpful...more than you might expect.

Now back to your regularly scheduled fucked up programming......

a few things

agree much with trey. I would say this, be careful of getting into mindset of 'things will be better when...' Make things better now. I am sure there are things that you can do right now to make your life better. If I could apply my own matrix to you, and forgive me, I understand I don't have too much of a fucking clue, much of your bitching over that past 6 months has been about your loosing your job. Well, fucking problem solved. And I don't mean going to work for Alice either. Get your own shit in a pile financially and emotionally before you move to a new and totally different locale where decent jobs are tough to come by.

As far as a bonus getting taxed at 50%. This simply is not the case. What happens is when you get a bonus the lame accounting software annualizes your pay+ bonus so, suddenly, when they do the withholding accounting it seems like you make a lot more annually than you do. As a result they withhold more. Bonus pay is just pay and is lumped in with your gross at the end of the year like any other earned income. So, that extra amount taken out of your bonus will be refunded later. In order to avoid this, you can redo your w-4 and add in extra dependants to make up the difference.
same goes for occasional OT pay.

This all sounds so strange K but there's been stranger things happen in corporate America. But...weren't you tearing off your flesh (and our ears) off worrying about the pending lay offs due to the knider, gentler Indian subcontinental workers just a week or so ago?

From neck on the block to bonus. Damn, what happened in between all this?

Make things better now. I'm really trying to work on that. I like the w-4 idea and I'm keeping that one around...it might come in handy.

I'm coming down to the point I need to make an in depth exploration trip to SF, and not rely on websites and second hand info to make the decision about SF. I may get out there and find it's not what I expected, or it's better. So the advice requests will taper off, I'm hoping this reaches criticality soon enough and it either works out or self destructs.

Plus I could always interview with Alice for that position she mentioned.

Oh, and since this is the fuck thread, FUCK YER DAY! Next subject!

What fuck just happened to my computer?

Anyways: sometimes (like when the rest of you fuckers are having meaningful dialogue or telling each other to fuck off), I check out the "newest members" of the fucking "community" as they're listed on the board. Pulled this from his website:

"Compassionate Communication skills will assist you in dealing with major blocks in communication such as demands, diagnoses and denials of responsibility. You will learn to express your feelings without attacking and will minimize the likelihood of creating defensiveness in others. The skills will help you to make clear requests. They will assist you in being able to receive critical and hostile messages without taking them personally, giving in or losing self-esteem. These skills will be useful with your family, friends, students, subordinates, supervisor, co-workers and clients."

This guy could make a million off this fucking crowd. Or go crazy trying.
