I think the upsides have something to do with social learning and adaptions, and the downsides can be very deeply personal.

Don't let him get you riled Fishy. You cannot be Spiritual if you do not passionatly embrace and cherish the "material" world. To not feel and greive the loss of a loved one, even though you know you will meet and be with him in the next life, seemeth to me to be a lack of spirituality. I am sad for your loss Fishy.

Yeah. And a lot of what was lost in Katrina was things like neighborhoods--including the interconnections between people. That may not be "spiritual" per se, but it sure isn't the vanity of compusive collecting.
