Maybe we're just subjects he's going to study for his next book. Lydia will get a whole fucking chapter. Or two.

Another camoflaged Christ-O-Holic, no doubt. And Lydia won't be the only one getting a chapter in his book.

I'm curious as to what gives you that impression, K2. I looked at his website and didn't see any of the usual warning flags.

Flux, it's more of a hunch but when I looked at his page I was suddenly thinking of James Dobson...the Focus on the fuckin Family asshole.

I knew I was stereotyping but this guy raises a big yellow caution flag in my mind. I hope I'm just overreacting again.

>As far as a bonus getting taxed at 50%. This simply is not the case.

While I'm not an accountant and know fuck-all about taxes, the last time I
got a bonus I was making ~$40K and the bonus was $1000, after taxes
about $600. You're telling me 1/40 of my pay put me in a bigger tax
bracket? Sounds fishy to me.

Not sure the tax brackets in CA, but when I was looking at getting laid off in the beginning of the year- I took the time to find out what my severance check was going to be. I found out that bonuses and severance (along with a host of other incomes) are considered "supplemental income". The federal rate for supplemental is 25%. With state tax it was going to be 40% for Oregon.

From precipitate's post, it looks like the 40% might be the norm for CA too. Ask HR what the rates for supplemental tax is in your local state. To be forwarned is to be forfucked. Or something like that.

A couple is sitting in a restuarant having a couple of beers and reminiscing about the college years. They get into beer drinking games, and one called quarters in particular. In this game, you bounce a quarter off a table into someone else's beer- and you have to drink the beer. The girl makes it into the cup and her boyfriend pounds down the beer. The quarter manages to drop into his mouth and he starts to choke on it.

"Oh my God!" she screams, "Someone help him!"

A man sitting near them casually looks up, puts down his paper, and walks over. He sticks one hand out- palm up, in front of the choking man. With his other hand, he reaches down and violenty grabs the choking man's testicles.

The quarter pops out of the choking man and land perfectly into the middle of the outstreched palm.

"Oh thank you sir, thank you! Are you a doctor?" she asks.

"No ma'am," the man replies, pocketing the quarter, "IRS."

the supplemental thing is news to me but...

if your were making 40K you were pulling roughly 1500 per 2 week pay period. Adding 1K to that, or 66%, would certainly crank up your withholding. It makes some accounting sofware think you are suddenly making 66K per anum.

This concept of a fixed 'supplemental' rate is really rich. It totally fucks lower income folks. Imagine my boss's boss' boss' boss getting taxed only 25% for his annual multi-million dollar bonus and compensation package. Whoooeee!

That fucking $40K is what's making me think twice about moving to the Bay Area. If I lose it and have to regroup that's one thing. But to walk away from it...that's not as easy. Yeah, it's only 40K, but 40K recovering from my accident in a very forgiving, yet extremely chaotic environment is kinda nice.

Having had a job that paid bonuses and also having been laid off, that kind of income is taxed at the federal rate of 28%, additionally, they take out Social Security and Medicare taxes.. It may be even more in states with an income tax. You may end up getting some of it back if you get a refund in the spring..

I need a fucking beer..

It was a 1 week pay period, and everyone's bonus was taxed at
something averaging to 46% - I'm not sure why I was around 41% but
my coworker was at 49%. There's no way we were all getting the same
bonus amount proportionally, because the bonus amounts were fixed,
whereas salaries were not. We all got $1000, but most of us didn't make
$40K, and we all paid 40-something% in taxes on the bonus.

I do know that, for tax purposes, bonuses are not salary. Dunno what the
rules are, but I do know they go into a different box somewhere.

But I get what you're saying about (badly designed) software getting
confused, thanks for the explanation.

IMO the single dirtiest wartime expedient ever forced upon American taxpayers was federal income tax witholding.

How likely would a taxpayer revolt be if we had to write checks for nearly half of our income and send it to the IRS instead of the way it's done now, where by Federal mandate your employer isn't allowed to let you touch your pay before the government confiscates their "share"?

No fucking way! Not fucking offended - just amused at the idea of being someone's... fucking case study or something.

Don't communicate like this crazy fucking lady!

I would much rather have to ask what someone means than be leered at by those little yellow fuckers any day of the week.

Poor Rob. Both my roommates, their kid, and two of my coworkers are sick right now, so it probably won't be long until I am too. Especially since I'll be trick-or-treating in the snow tomorrow night.

That's right. Hot bean dip into the sinuses.

What an **EXCELLENT** fucking way to start a day.

Look at the bright side: once you get the beans out, you won't have a stuffed up nose for the rest of the day!

Oh, and I'm glad to know I'm not the only one that thinks hot jalapeno bean dip is an appropriate breakfast food.

Good thing it wasn't habanero dip, or you might have to commit fucking seppuku with a Frisbee.

Alice turned me on to that website a few weeks ago. It's one of the funniest fucking things ever! Gotta get some of that cool merch.
