Making The Most of Limited Playa Time

Post by Mister Jellyfish Mister » Wed Jul 19, 2006 7:04 am

I will be at Burning Man for about 42 hours this year. I know by now that having an "efficient agenda" is the wrong way to do it as expectations tend to kill the serendipity of it all.

Here we can talk about practicle and spiritual ways to participate in an abridged version of the burn.

I hate to say it, but sleep may not be your best option during that time.

Shit, okay, well, spend about 41 hours running around in the ManTis, creating smiles, gratitude, and freak-outs everywhere, then head over to Flux Capacitor Camp and see what they can do for you (bring some DeLorean parts).

Otherwise, I imagine you'll be hanging with cool people you love, and that's half the battle. Cheers for your commitment.

i'd suggest not overindulding on the drinkee/smokee/takee so that you could maintain longer and be more fully present and remember the things you do/see.

and any ol' thing you wanna do/see....do/see it right then. either it, or you, probably won't be there if/when you come back. good advice for anyone at the event even for the whole week, but more important with limited time.

Wow. All good stuff. Keep it commin'

I won't have time to acclimatize, and as I recall, energy comes in short but controllable bursts. It would be nice to have little "packets" of interaction or giftage, easy to carry and deploy on whim.

Acclimatize before hand, then. Hell, Jelly, you LIVE in that part of the world pretty much, so thats a plus. Get used to drinking water. First and foremost. Water is your friend.

Start driving around with the windows up and the AC off to get used to the heat, then go into a walk-in fridge to catnap.

Get used to drinking water, plan on little sleep. Esp the water thing, as not enough of that will come and bite you, which can (a) hurt you, and (b) beat you up physically... Beware of too much of anything - drugs, drinking, overstimulation, exertion.

If you go out and fly Mini or Mantis, do so in bursts, not all in one stretch (i.e. have a second to take over every so often so you don't kill yourself!!!). Did I mention get used to HYDRATING yourself?

On a final note... We have decided that we are NOT allowing you to go home in the REMSA chopper, no matter HOW fun it sounds. And expect at least one interrogation. Maybe 2. Maybe even 3. >heyh heyh heyh...<

Devourngly yours,
bb

Suggestion 1: Make a list of all the "must go" places you think you have time to fit into your stay. Get a map of the city and mark the locations of all these places. Now when you get there, go to areas that have the fewest or no marks at all and see the stuff you would have missed if you had done the stuff on your list. That way you can say you didn't miss a thing.

Suggestion 2: Go to the post office, grab a stack of mail at random, deliver it. You will find some of the coolest people that way. Everyone loves to get mail and they will almost always offer you something to drink. And while you are on your rounds, you can remind any spectators just standing around to keep moving. This keeps them headed toward a zone of interactivity someplace, whereever that might be.

Geekster, that is pure brilliance.

I think I'm going to plan at least a day doing just that even though I'm out there for the whole week.

This is sensational. The good advice you are all giving me is striking a universal chord with many who are staying the duration.

It helps when I remind myself that we are all fucking doomed.

be aware that if you do everything that Espresso dude sez, you might get kick out of the event.

don't Mix the letter X with anything except water, unless you never want to remember your trip.

don't rub up against anyone except Espresso dude unless you want the Rangers or even worst lock you up in Gerlack for 48 hours.

Otherwise let it flow!

What day will you be there?

...just bring that time machine of yours, so when your 42nd hour approaches (zing!) back to the beginning to take another go at it!

But I'm using the time machine to attend BM 1991.

It's so much better than this year.
