Net laundry bags are wonderful for collecting cans-you can see if anyone has put anything else in, and the cans will dry before you need to bring them down. Also, you can use them to collect your compost (banana peels, etc.) which will also dry thus eliminating even more wet garbage problems. YAAAYYYY!! :D

We are actually beginning to phase out our traditional cart-bikes which people could check out to go tour the city meeting their neighbors and collecting cans. In their place will be sociable tandems with trailers, allowing two or three people to go out and collect, and for more cans to be picked up before the collectors have to return to Recycle. We should have one in use this year with more to come in the future.

And here's a link to volunteering with Recycle. Benefits include: kickass camp with an awesome location, excellent infrastructure, cold beer all day, the playa comes to you, and let's not forget the wonderful feeling that comes from volunteering for a worthy cause.

And this has absolutely nothing to do with this thread except that they both are things I've done. This is so I can get to it easily. The one tied up alongside is the one I was on (at the time this pic was taken we were in the Gulf).

Here's a link to the form for volunteering-if you want to camp with Recycle, you'll want to do this. If you just want to randomly swing by and volunteer for a few minutes (or a few hours) you'll always be welcome.

Jesus guys, that thing looks like an accident.

One already happened in its construction, no safety guards, rotating man manglers, no E-stops....;

And another waiting to happen when it eats somebody.

And another when osha sees it and starts writing citiations.

YAAAAAYYYY!!!!! And can you believe we got funding to build it no less. I was the one who did the design for the running gear. The first accident was in the testing phase of the first barrel when it bit off a little chunk of my pinky. The guy on the left is my buddy Bear, the guy on the right is our Project Manager and co-designer Blue, and the guy you can't see just on the other side of the machine is me. There have been several non-injury accidents due to a redesign (not mine) that caused the axles to fail. My original design had solid axles through the barrels, but it was decided to use and extend the existing axles-leading to multiple failures where the barrel would suddenly drop onto the baskets below. Very exciting. This machine has been on display at other events and when it is, the upper half is wrapped in trash fence. Oh, and it's always operated by core volunteers.
When it's not in use, we disable the drive and drop a chock in the barrels preventing anyone from starting it up accidentally.

And it looks this year like we'll have at least one new art vehicle, and if I have anything to do with it, we'll have transpo for 20 by next year.

By the by, if anyone sees some abandoned BMX bikes, send me a PM so I can get them.

ALL YOUR CANS ARE BELONG TO US
You must utterly destroy all the sanctuaries where they honored their gods—on the mountain heights, on the hills, and under every leafy tree. Topple their altars, smash their pillars, BURN their sacred groves, and HEW DOWN THEIR IDOLS…

We're from MARYLAND, sir!

The nine (actually it was eleven!) are relatively dispersed now. Myself and Jason (Aedon) are the only two of that eleven returning. Possibly Don (Dirty) too, if we're lucky.

Can't wait to see you out there either!

'little solar generator'

Post by pink » Fri Jul 21, 2006 1:58 pm
. You can get a charger you can plug into your cigarette lighter, and a little solar panel to clip to your car battery. Voila. No more bag full of dead batteries, no more running out of batteries.
Hey Desert Duck, where can I get one of these little solar panels and can you plug a regular old plug (like to my van coach battery) to one? i'm trying to find a way to recharge my coach without a gas generator. And I can't afford a real solar generator for the thing yet. I don't use a lot of juice, but do use some for my pump etc.

The solar panels I'm talking about clip directly to your car battery and are good to keep a charge on if it's under light use with good sun- you could run your radio a fair bit if it wasn't a huge system, charge your cellphone, use a car charger for batteries, stuff like that. Not huge usage, but enough to make a difference. There are tons of places that carry this kinda stuff including that electronics place and a number of surplus type outlets.

The panel would look like this (with the clips).

Image

Here's an example of a battery charger you can use in your car for AA's and such. Note the cigarette lighter plug.

Image

You could also get these items from any number of RV places.

Note that it's a good idea to have a voltmeter to keep an eye on your battery condition.

Recycle WILL have at least one functioning collection vehicle capable of carrying more than one person. Also, it may at times be accompanied by a stylie couch!!
