truck tents

Post by Rusted Iron » Sun Jul 23, 2006 11:13 am

I'm going to leave the travel trailer behind, this year, so I'm looking at tents. Specifically, I'm looking at tents that will attach to the back of my truck.

Has anyone had any experience with these or similar tents?

If you can afford that one.... Get it. I would have to design my own. Last year I covered the van with old blankets and sleeping bags. Then covered the whole thing with a large tarp. It worked great to keep the heat out. Also the blanket kept the tarps from rubing the paint off the van.

Blankets... that's a good idea. I'm also placing shade material over the front of the truck to keep the sun-heated air from filling the camper shell and the tent, but I was reluctant to scratch up the paint. (It's such a nice shade of purple.)

I haven't decided if I can afford the tent or not, yet. Not towing a travel trailer should save me some on gas. Probably not $200+, though.

Oooh, that's a nice one. If I had $230 I'd trade my good old liftback tent for that in a second. My double airbed almost completely fills the back space of my Navajo.

I'm sheltering in my yurt this year (yurts trump pretty much everything short of a 24' dome) so I'm only sleeping in my vehicle one, maybe two nights. A cramped sleeping den and jerry-rigged dressing room are tolerable for that period of time. However, something like that would be good for decoms, recomps, horse shows and festivals.

Here's another something-or-other (Image alert) you might want to have a look at:

I went and ordered the thing. If anyone wants to know how it worked out, ask me in September.

Rusted, I used a truck tent out there for 3 years in a row. It worked great. My truck had a grooved liner and I put down a piece of plywood cut to fit the back, tent on top, and inside was a 4 inch dense foam pad. Most comfortable experience ever, and the tent held up great in the wind. You'll love it. I have a new truck this year and a new truck tent.
