I have a friend who's a printmaker; unfortunately she's just had her 2nd kid. What do you want to do/need to know?

I need information and recommendations for media as well as cheap but attractive mounting options. I'm making prints as playa gifts this year.

utrecht is selling the glass frames with clips in 4x6 and 5x7 size RIGHT NOW, at least in the retail stores, for $1! That's a great price for a good clean frame--you can probably find a deal on precut mats if you look around.
Lino is also cheap.

And look at that, there's one in SLC. I'll have to give them a look. I'll czech the dollar stores, too. What about paper? Will rice paper give me a good clean print with water-soluble inks?

Sneak peek of my first design:

I'm experimenting with different papers, and this really thin tissue paper gives me the best print, but it's really flimsy, so sturdy mounting will be especially important.

I don't think so. I remember rice paper as being very soft. But the utrecht site has some rice papers under printmaking under paper/boards, so I could be very wrong. Definately go with non-acid--I hate yellowing art. But this is really outside my experience.

You'll have to come by the Home for Wayward Art and pick one up. I know rice paper is what's commonly used for Japanese-style woodblock printing, and my lino-cut block is essentially the same thing, but I haven't actually handled any rice paper, and I can only find it in a huge roll, so I don't want to buy it and have it be useless. The things I'm finding online talk about meticulously preparing and moistening the rice paper so it doesn't wrinkle or sag. Maybe they're just more anal than I am. Or maybe that guy is just trying to justify the hefty price tag he puts on his prints. They are impressive, though.

Call the SLC utrecht and ask. If you get an answer that sounds like they don't know, call any other localish art store. See if you can get a supply list from a community college or the like printmaking course.
I think I'm wrong on the rice paper. It may be a matter of sizing and other issues, not the basic fiber.
I wish I knew more and could help you.

free and doing AntiM a favor by clearing out her storage area beats that $10 for 100 sheets I saw on ebay.
Oh and I found a couple of web references to rice paper and block printing so I think we can say that fishy leaped into the void (or ovid) and said more than she knew.
