Flying Potties

Made me think that it would be a fun art piece to have a crane dangling a porta-potty parked way out in the hinterlands. Not near any functional ones of course, to see if the pee-pee dance can be induced.

Or you could go Duchamps and install one upside down.
Last year at LoudVille we had an old, dead, golf cart with two maniquins inside hanging from a crane.

potties hung from cranes

Post by robbidobbs » Fri Feb 20, 2004 3:24 pm

I was referring to an earlier post about a porta-pottie hanging from a crane. It reminded me of my neighbors who hung an old golfcart from a crane and spun it around, making the maniquins dizzy.

Then my computer crashed, and I was unable to elaborate.

Stoopid computer.

Great stories, but if you want to opt out, and have hitch, then rent some potties of your own. Our camp has been doing it for the last seven years, and I was hooked on my first piddle. All our campmates pay a nominal fee for use which includes costs for one cleaning onsite. We started doing the cleaning when our number reached 17. Prior to that, the two sanis on a trailer were enough for entire camp for a week.

Cost - 75 or 105 if you get the ones with sinks. That's the charge for one weekend, so if you are going with a weekend on either side then you have to pay twice that...or have someone come into Sparks on the first Monday to pick them up.

If you go this route you must invest in locks, and a shade (camoflage) structure is also recommended. There is a sani-hut place on Greg Street in Sparks, and you may want to get reservations. When we started doing this our's were the only non-event potties on the playa, but last year I saw several.

Having your own personal potty at your camp is great. Just remember kids that you're probably not going to be spending 100% of your time at your own camp, that you'll probably be doing 75% of your excretions while out and about. So treat the public potties like you would your own personal bathroom: with respect. Don't leave trash or fem prods that you just don't want to cart around. Plan ahead and bring ziploc bags along with for the icky trash. They go back to camp with you.

If I may also excrete some wisdom here...

If you DO get potties for your own camp, please REMEMBER to follow the same basic rules as for the BRC ones - If it's not from your body, it goes NOT in the potty. The last thing those of us who do do doo-doo palaces in our Kamps need is JOTS or Sani-Hut NOT renting to us next year because someone rented one and trashed it or slucked up the truck.

At least you have options you have not with the communal JOTS...

(1) PUT a WASTE RECEPTACLE in the camp potty. Encourage people to use it.
(2) Elect a "Latrine Queen" who does in your camp what Robbi does for BRC.
(3) Get a combo lock, and the only the people in your camp have the combo.
(4) Talk to your vendor beforehand to set up pump schedules, tips to make your rest stop more rewarding, etc.

One ply on sale this week at walgreen's (at least in SF Bay Area) for $1 for two rolls, but coupon found in advertising circular. They usually have extra at the front of the store, so you can tear out your coupon there even if you didnt' get it with your sunday paper.

I have to say that 2006 has been the best potty year so far. It seems like the lineups were smaller and the potties never got as full or dirty as previous years. Were there more this year? More frequent cleaning? Great job to JOTS and everyone for keeping them so nice!

Sadly, by the weekend there was a lot of trash in the potties at night.

I'm hoping RobbiDobbs sees this as she has some good info on changes JOTS made for this year. Basically they had their act together and brought in some new equipment that really made a difference if I remember it right...but I'll shut up and let her tell it.

Our bank got pretty full, seemed like a cleaning or two was delayed. We were camped straight across at 8:30 and Destiny, oddly, there was no odor in camp. I did do the afterburn morning potty cleanup, latex gloves and a grabber; found one safety vest and a pair of men's insoles plus assorted bottles and cans in the blue soup. Also a very suspicious arizona tea container; I dumped it and decided that no, it had been margarits mix all along.

There were tampons in the potties all week, I lectured at the top of my lungs a few times and at least once a girl with a little purse slunk away in shame. Whoever hung the container of OB tampons on the handcleaning station wasn't actually doing anyone a favor, those just ended up in the potties too.

The poopers were clean and abundant along the one street. Whoever it was too far to have to go most of the time. Can BM put more poopers out in more locals?

the last year that the potties were way far more scattered (i can't even remember the year.. 99 maybe?) they were in the worst shape i have ever seen. it was like spreading them out allowed less time for the shit-suckers to do their work.

this year was the first year we had a pee tent. we had a a 5-gallon bucket with a toilet seat and chemical powder. it was a godsend, especially after thursday. i will definitely not go to any festivals again without one!

as for the the overall state of the potties this year.. they were okay. not the best i have seen them. on our street (4:30), toilet paper was a rare commodity. there weren't even empty rolls, which makes me think people swiped them. after wednesday, there was a lot of garbage and a lot of shit on the walls. there was also a disturbing amount of bloody tampons and pads left in the potty.. as if someone actually had the sense to think, "this shouldn't go in the potty" but then thought it was okay to just leave it sitting there. i have to applaud my campmates who were on the rag and carried ziplock bags with them everywhere. another thing i noticed was more graffiti than ever. there was a lot of old graffiti from other events (like high school stuff saying "so-and-so is a fag.") i really had to groan when i entered the same potty later in the week and some self-righteous burner had written back, saying things like, "STOP IT, THAT'S IGNORANT."

i think the annual potty educational poetry on the doors is cute, but it doesn't send a strong or clear enough message. perhaps what would be more effective is putting a clear list of what is allowed and what is not on the inside of the doors and people can read it while they are pooping.

anyhow, keep up the good work, shit educators.

The handicapped potty in the 6:30/Eager bank was decorated up! No joke, a taped radio, a candle, incense, perfumed wipes, fuzzy toilet lid cover, framed art hung on the walls, it was great in there!

I did notice that the decorated potty was not as trashed as the undecorated ones. I think we've found a magical combination here, decorate a potty and it'll stay nice and clean! Image
