CHILDREN, INCIDENTS, SAFETY
Ron, I generally agree with you, but ...
When people bring kids into my camp, I feel some responsibility for what they are exposed to in my camp. I leave mine at home for some of the same reasons that you do, although mine are now old enough to fully participate as adults.
I am fond of the kidsville group as well - but it's not my choice, as you said.
As to whether or not the BM experience is "abusive" - of course not. However, you had better be able to explain if little Johnny starts sharing what he did last summer in his first grade classroom.
One year we had a moderately inebriated transgender individual, stark naked, with hoo haas and woo hoos flying, ride his/her gas powered scooter through our camp, under our shade structure, round and round the dinner table, back out the other side, leaving gifts of dildos and nipple clamps. - Would be lovely at show and tell....

All issues of safety aside, it's my belief that over thrilling, dazzling and shocking kids does them a diservice in the long run. I prefer to leave the adult world undiscovered, so that my kids don't enter it already jaded.
It's a personal philosophy, and not one I'd push on anyone. We all have/get to decide what's best for our children.

I feel we're missing the core issue here. Its not about weither kids are ok at BM or not, its about the adults that try to limit other adults actions while hiding behind the wall of B.S. of "It's to keep the childern safe".
Leave the parenting to the parents, not the damn "lawmakers". If you're a parent and are ok with your kids seeing the thing adults do at BM, cool.
If your not ok with your kids seeing that, then keep them at home.
Just don't ask me to coddle your kids for you...
/two cents

There are already limits on drugs, weapons and sex and yet the event thrives. Kidsville is a good way to accomodate kids, and I'm confident there will be new innovations along those lines coming.
No doubt about it, more people and more diversity brings more rules. But I've yet to see a rule implemented without MUCH discussion, consideration and compromise. Despite the huge increase in rules since I first attended the event in '95, BRC remains the freest place on earth.
John Law left in '96 and the event got kicked off the Black Rock and everyone said that was the end. But '97 marked the real birth of the theme camp with a 20X increase in registered camps.
And yet every year, people threaten to leave when the specter of change is raised. I think that and being jaded are really the same thing. Fine. Go. We will burn on.

No problem as long as no one makes a law that says I have to listen.SED wrote:capjbadger wrote:It ain't broke.
Quit trying to "fix" it...
Fine, as long I still get to complain and pontificate.

Hmmmm... interesting...SED wrote:How about allowing any rule or law as long as the maker is required to enforce it?
How far can they go to enforce their rule?

Now that's scary...
You guys want BM to be "dangerous" again? I think SED just found your solution.

i got no problem with being jaded, in fact i got no problem with walking away without even bitching about it. but change for this event seems to come down to 30/70 for good to bad.BigCock wrote:...And yet every year, people threaten to leave when the specter of change is raised. The issues I have seen with kids at BRC are really no different than the issues I see with kids everywhere. If a parent is irresponsible at home, they are going to be irresponsibe on the playa too. I have not witnessed any problems concerning children being harassed, tormented, abused, assaulted, or tossed into burn barrels in my experiances with the community both on playa and in other venues. I have witnessed instances of children being unsupervised or not being given what I would consider to be proper attention to their well being (lack of sunscreen, goggles, mask, hat, etc) but that is the fault of their idiot parents.
Bringing kids might or might not be a problem depending on your personal values. I would suggest that you keep a close eye on them because there are things out there that could cause injury if they aren't supervised and pay close attention to their hydration, their sun exposure, and the dust conditions. Your experiance is pretty much going to revolve around them and if you are prepared for that, great, you can all have a great time together. If you are going in order to have a great personal experiance and are bringing the child/children because you don't have anyone to watch them, I might suggest you put some more thought into it.

Yes some one was innapproriate with my kids at the burn and it involved certain officials NOT returning to retreive me from my camp as I waited in wedding veil and panic sweat over myMIA children and husband who tried to High five a semi truck just ten miles from the gate upon their return. My kids knew our address, and needed me. They were inappropriatly ignored, and detained by retired circus freaks at the Sparks juvee home for blood splattered youths .
THEN more recently, the fall out of the afforementioned; placed our lives on hold, with them receiving less attention because of a certain grim grooms need to be center stage until his recoverey into the job force,...this then .completely swept him off and into family detatchment as he proceeded to ignore them and then blame them for being less than he expected, His answer to guiding them then included denying them meals hitting them with a broom and dragging them down a flight of stairs, when he wasnt busy not showing up for school events ,or falling asleep after diner.
