We are building a dome, but instead of a geodesic, we want to try the following.
Plant 1' - 1.5' stakes in the ground round in a circle the size of the dome, and simply place one end of PVC tubing over one stake, and the other end over another stake. Very much like today's tents with the collapseable rods. Then over the half sphere structure place a used parachute. One option is to then tie down the parachute and stake it down strongly, the other is to make it so that it can be quickly removed in case of windstorm.
Does anyone from past experience know if this setup is sufficiently secure?

I saw that same setup a few times last year and it looked like they help up just fine. Didn't even need a quick release. The only thing I'd worry about is haveing to replace the PVC every couple year due to the UV making the PVC brittle.

If the PVC is only used in Black Rock, I wouldn't worry about
the UV making the PVC brittle. You are only talking about a week
of exposure, just keep the thing stored out of the sun the rest of the year.
Should last years.

Simply slipping the pvc over rebar will not help you if the wind creates any lift inside of your dome. You may want to drill a hole at each end of the pvc lengths. Pound some tight candy cane rebar into the playa at the appropriate spots and lash the ends to the rebar. It can get mighty windy out there and I'd hate to see your dome turn into a parasol.

Last year I built a shade structure in much the same manner. I used zip ties to secure the pvc pipes to each other durring set up and when everything was positioned just right I duct-taped over the zip tied areas. It worked really well and was not so bad to take apart.

For the past 3 years I have built a PVC dome that I had designed. Here are few important tips that I can pass along the may help you out...I even have the plans saved someplace I think. This year I will not be constructing one.
The dome I built was 30 feet around.
1) connect your PVC together but in the connecting areas slip in a 3 foot length of 1 size smaller pipe. Use duck tape on the ends to keep it from slipping. Try dishsoap if they are hard to get in * The result is superior strength.
2) Form your circle and lay your pips out. You should have 6 lenghts when all connected. Now space them so the end result is that you have a "Star of David" in the middle instead of them coming together in one place. Where the legs cross you can use "U" bolts to secure them. This shape provides the needed strength in 75 mile winds.
3) Where the size legs cross your circle, drive 3 foot sections of rebar in to the ground at a 60 degree angle. After this is done have everyone grab a leg and walk forward. Place the open end of the PVC over the rebar. It will pop up like magic.
4) Once everything is up I suggest making a circle around the base of the dome with 1" PVC. Drill this into the legs of the dome...then us "J" shaped rebar to stake down your dome and this will prevent uplift.
