Is my car going to melt?

Post by haolegolucky » Sun Jul 30, 2006 5:53 pm

HA.

Actually, I remember seeing somewhere that someone's cds melted in their car because it got too hot inside it.

Any prep ideas for cars, before I leave mine on the bottom of a dried up lakebed for a week plus?

WHEE! Less then one month!!!!

If possible, I would park the car with the nose pointed South and one of those reflective shades in the windshield and maybe those shades you use to block sun for kids in the other windows except for the back which won't get much sun. This means that most of the sun will fall in the hood which is open underneath and allows air circulation. The reflective shade in the windshield will shade the inside from most of the sunlight. The trunk will get hot so pay attention to what you have in there. Remove the spare gas can you keep in there even if empty because it might blow up. Other crap you have in there might melt. Melted crap is even crapier crap than the crap that it started out as.

Park on a tarp/piece of cardboard, makes LNT much easier.

Cover the whole thing with a tarp and make sure it won't blow off. It will keep the insides cool and the outside fairly clean. It will also enhance your esthetic experience, not having to look at a parked Buick all through the burn.

Wash and wax the car before you leave from home. Set your interior fan to recycle instead of fresh when you pull off the road onto the playa. Cover your windows with something - my favorite is mylar emergency blankets and 14 day-removal masking tape. Cardboard is a good idea, I may try that this year. Pull everything out of the car so you aren't opening up the door 10 times a day. Don't let any ropes or anything rub up against the paint when you set up. Clean it up real good, including the underside and engine compartment, when you get home. Pledge wipes get the dust off the interior.

That's it.

I wouldn't trust a tarp against my car paint personally.. though I'm sure some have done it and it worked out fine.

Other than the quantity of dust and lack of garages the playa doesn't have any conditions you wouldn't see in many major cities.

Put a freshly washed old blanket under the tarp to cushion any rubbing areas. Make sure it extends beyond the edge of the tarp.

If you've got some towels, moisten them with water and roll them up inside the windows draping inward. That allows the interior to breath and traps much of the playa dust.

You can use your trunk as a lock-box.

Some duct tape melts in the heat. Beware!

I've never heard of or seen anyone's car (or CD's for that matter) melting. I could see a CD jewel-case melting (it's a much different grade of plastic, I've had a couple melt on me in mall parking lots), but not the disc or the vehicle.
