Margarita time!

I have a couple of last minute chores that I need to finish before I load my stuff. I have to fix my playa bike. Last year the crank bearings completely disintegrated. Anyone know about replacing that? I also bought some cheetah patterned fur I need to do something with, but that I know how to do.

I could say secrets and mysteries, but I won't.

I bought a used white tux. I'm going to put it on the lapels and make cuffs for the sleeves and pants. I also think I'll make a coordinating fez. That shouldn't take too much, so I'll see what I have left and go from there.

Yeah, it should look good. Still trying to decide on a shirt (or not I suppose).

Oh, do you have a tent size for me for the map?

Still have to make my sputnik EL-wire logo

No I don’t, someone is suppose to be supplying that for me, but I don’t know who or even what kind of tent it is. I also don’t know how I’m getting from BRC to the Reno airport to leave,... It is a truly strange situation to be in , the lack of control has been a bitch to come to terms with.

i'm leaving at some ungodly hour on Mon morning. want to see the temple burn though, missed that last year. you're more than welcome to come with shoegirl and me. we just want to get a room for a quick shower and maybe a few winks of sleep, but i know you'll be gentlemanly and won't peek thru the shower curtain....

I might take you up on it Sput ,but I’ve been planning to get dropped straight at the airport and leave rather than get a room. for now I think I will be content to not have it nailed down.

dUCK is a bike expert. You can buy a set of balls and cups for about $10, and a shaft for 5 or 6. Is the crank 1 piece or an axle with separate arms?

You will need a puller (about $7) if separate crank arms. Most likely one side of the bearing cup is left hand threads. You may need a hook wrench to undo the lock nut.

Another possibility is a cartridge bearing, but these are sealed and not likely to fail.

Look up Sheldon Brown on the internet....pages and pages of bike details and how-tos

http://www.sheldonbrown.com/

bike shop maybe $25.00 to fix it

Understood Z. My flight is real early on Monday morning and I don't want to chance missing it because I know how crazy that airport is in the morning following the burn.

This is a beater I pulled out of a dumpster near a goodwill store. I bought new tires for it and painted it, so maybe I've spent $30 on it so far. Another $10 or $20 is well worth it.

It's a single piece crank. The whole thing is hanging loose, so there won't be any trouble taking it off. I'd like to do it myself, just for the experience.

I wish!

No, I'm putting my bike and a box of stuff on the Jacuzzi bus. Heck, both are costing me a total of about $40. That's half of what the airline wants for one extra bag.

Pick up a bike in Gerlach on the way in. I hear they are there and will take them back at the end.

hmmm....the interwebs are scaring me about replacing this bearing. Looks like I need some tools to press it into place that I don't have. Maybe best to take it to the shop. I just hate not being able to do it myself though.

Goodnight Jewel!

I'm going to take off too. It would be nice to take a ride in the morning if it isn't 80 fricken degrees out.

one piece crank is easy (pray that the ballrace on the crank is OK)
remove pedals. Left one is likely left hand thread. look for "L" stamped on end of threaded part . Then remove the nut from the crank at the bearing. left side I think, maybe left hand threads. This is like a 1" hex. Then a washer with a prong facing the center of the hole (anti-rotation) then another nut/bearing race. As this comes loose all the balls fall out. These 3 parts should slip off the end of the crank and then pull the crank thru to the right. A dowel or piece of pipe thru the hole where the crank was. angle it so it is against the bearing race on the other side. tap with hammer. Work around the bearing so it comes our reasonably square. repeat for other side.

Take all the pieces to a bike shop and get a replacement set.

Tap the new bearing cups in, grease the balls to hold in place. tighten the first nut just tight enuff to eliminate wobble, the the key washer, second nut, pedals..... Check the nuts, sometimes putting the second nut on makes the first one too tight.

Smile, wipe off grease, drink a beer

Hi all. :D

I have been wondering if I should get a beater bike or not. I suppose I would still be able to ride one even after not being on one for so long.

There are miles and miles and miles (like 35) of streets in BRC. I bike is a good idea. Check aout the local Goodwill main warehouse. Also new bikes at K-mart/Walmart are cheap-maybe $ 60-70.... A beater has more class though..

The bar will be practically next door to Barrachos e Bicicyles or something like that...several bike mechanics....but you should bring spare tubes

Also there are likely to be some at the bar that aren't in use..beg, plead, offer hair wash...

Yeah. I guess if I cannot ride it you guys will teach me. It took me a year and a half to learn to ride a bike when I was a kid. I don't know if my dad was mad at me or just very dissappointed. Turns out that I have no natural balance. Thank god for the wonder drugs that made pregnancies easier in the '50s. :(

any way if it is still there (in SLC), there was a guy who had a wrecking yard for bicycles. That will be my first opertunity to look for one used.
