Registered, but not placed
It is 'normal' for some number of theme camps to register and not be placed? This has happened to us this year (I will decline to state the name of our camp at this time).
This is our 5th year registered as this camp, and have always previously sent an early arrived party on Sunday to get things going ASAP. This is now in jeopardy. This is VERY dissapointing.
Does anybody know anything about this? And can 'registered' theme camps arrive early, even if not 'placed'? This seems really unfair to those who extend the effort to set up a theme camp. It takes like 3 days to set up our camp - why should I spend the week building and not burning?
Maybe we should just be spectators this year (couldn't if I tried, but we can build less - is that what the Borg wants? Why are we not being assimilated?).

Posting at 1:46 am with a snarky comment perhaps you could ask yourself that same question? It's just a thought.Bob wrote:Are you drunk?

It happens every year. I think you can still come in on Saturday and Sunday (i.e. before the event opens) to find an acceptable space and put up your camp, but why don't you try contacting someone in the placement office or elsewhere in the LLC to be sure. Or listen to rumor and speculation.

Thanks for the input, Crypto. I had never heard of this.
Our spokesperson I guess doesn't want to be a squeaky wheel and bug the placement office with such questions. She was under the impression that we could not enter early unless we were placed, but this may not be the case apparently.
Anyhow, one of our camp members has successfully schmoozed us a placement via the 'other' virtual BM, tribe.net. This is great news.
However, if one only needs to be 'registered' and not 'placed' to enter and set up early then I guess it doesn't matter - but I could not locate said policy on the website and thereby assumed to most restrictive policy until proven otherwise.

Registered camp means that you are placed. If your camp is not
placed, then you are not registered. If you are not registered, then
you may not arrive before Monday 28th 0:01 AM.
And there is no smoozing, bribing, etc... in the placement team.

I don't know if, strictly speaking, you have to be registered to be placed, or be placed to be registered. But I do know that you had to have your camp's early arrival list submitted to BMORG by 17 July.
I don't know if you had to be registered or placed to submit for early arrival.
Perhaps someone from BMORG could clarify?
I also wonder if perhaps your camp application got lost in the mail (eaten by a spam filter?)
Oh, and I hear there were over 500 theme camps applied this year.

I am from "BMORG" :-)
Yes, the deadline for theme camp early arrival was the 17th.
You need to be registered/mapped to apply for early arrival.
Without early arrival approval, the earliest you may enter Black
Rock City is Monday 28th 0:01 AM.

You got placed via bm.tribe.net? Really? Do they take PayPal?
Contact the theme camp department, please, assuming you registered.
You did keep a hard copy of your reg form & confirmation, right?

ok so this is a funny one
placed not placed registered not registered!?
if by the grace of god , in years gone by you have not had this problem, then this problem has to be an indication of the growth of burningman
500 theme camps is mind bogleing....
so what size is your camp?
if about ....say 50 then it would'nt take to long to set up
so arriving on monday should'nt cramp your style tooo much, i hope...
if 120, the size of our camp, then it does become an issue
so those camps that have growen expedentialy (good word) need the special privalages that are bestowed, to get in early as allowed by the blm...take a breath
anyway i hope you get in, and get set up in time to see the man burn
yaaaaa the man burns in 32 days

lomaxfrog,
Thanks for your straight-forward reply to my honest question. I had no idea that more theme camps registered than could be placed. I guess we need to consider doing something other than 'another bar camp' to increase our placement likelihood - which is fine with me, but that's internal theme camp politics.
We're about a 40 person camp, and how long it takes to set up is not merely a function of numbers, but numbers on the first days (a predicted high of 20 this year) and how much we attempt to set up. Last year I missed a whole bunch of art that was dissassembled or burned before I got out to the playa to see them! I've heard some say this is done to 'punish' weekenders; it can also punish hard-working participants.
To those who doubt the power of online networking, we are now on the distribution list for a placement team member. And even if this didn't happen, we'd just have to come Monday - and confusion over 'placed' and 'registered' is just. If we jump through the registration hoops successfully as we did, we're registered (as far as I'm concerned) - but not placed apparently. This is admittedly semantics, but semantics are the result of unclear definitions typically - the primary reason of my post.
The last thing we want to do is give the hard-working volunteers of BM a hard time.

Mike, I don't think that anything is done to punish either the weekenders or the hard workers at all. There are thousands of things going on during the course of the week, it would be even more impossible to see things if it all went on during the last couple days.
My camp usually only does one big thing during the week, and it's on Wednesday night. Not because we want to punish anyone. For us, it's an outlet for all those who've been at the event since the start (or arrived even earlier) to cut loose before they have to get back into it for the weekend. A lot of camps are working hard, their members should get to play hard too.
