Babies on the playa

Post by squawgrl » Mon Jul 31, 2006 6:30 am

Hey I was wondering what info there is in regards to babies on the playa. I am thinking of bringing my daughter who will be about 7 months old. I am no newbie. This will be my 8th burn, and I had no problem when I was 6 months pregnant, but I just want to hear some stories and hear from the community of experienced parents, or kis for that matter. Thanks!

Personally I don't like the idea of babies on the playa. I have a couple, so not a baby hater. My main concern is conditions on the playa and the affect they may have on a baby. Primarily the baby's lack of communication skills to tell you just what is bothering them. My first year on the playa was something like 100 degrees + everyday, that would be a a very unfriendly environment for a small one. Plus the dust, noise etc.

And probably the most selfish of reasons, I couldn't imagine having to stay back at camp at night to baby sit, when I could be out.

But like any advice concerning children, do what works for you.

There's a sticky topic called kids and teenagers at Burning Man. Might be a good place to ask.

I had my 1 year old on the playa one year. I brought a shade structure and kept a small pool in there and periodically added ice. We had no RV, but during the hottest part of the day, we stayed inside my mini van with the AC on so that she could nap. We visited a lot of inside camps. Mornings and early evenings we ventured out a bit, but for the most part we stayed close to our own camp. An RV would have been ideal, but overall, it was a positive experience. I felt much better about having her out there with me than I would have if I had been there and missing her.

If you bring your baby, please stop by The Liver's End so that I can get my baby fix! My baby is going to be 9 this year.

last year i we had a 3 month old baby on the playa. at first, some people in camp got the fear that somehow the baby would take away from their holy sacred spiritual experience. like somehow camping near the baby would place demands on them or obligate them in some way.

so my sincere spiritual advice concerning these people is to FUCK THEM.

babies on the playa rock. they love it. they bring joy and surprise to everyone they meet - provided who they meet are not people wraped in some kind of spiritual wet blanket... so avoid these types anyway.

i've been to burningman 7 times, and my best experiences have been through the eyes of this baby, named felix.

just bring a space that you can keep cool and clean. we had a little swamp cooler (http://www.swampy.net ) that worked wonders in a small RV. but a mister would work fine also.

you might consider camping near or at 'kids camp' ... it's all good.

HI Sqwagrl,

Lots of babies on the playa have both survived and had a good time. Join us on the kidsville chat group: [email protected]

Do you have a camp to stay in already? There is always room in kidsville. Lots of posts from previous years about tips for brining babes etc. There about 150 families in our village, so there is tons of support for you and your baby, welcome.

Cheers,
Skyneedle

Is there an area for baby tossing? If so, I'll bring a bunch!

In all seriousness, some friends of mine brought their 7 month old last year and she was fine. This is no latchkey kid, she goes everywhere with them.

Has anyone ever given birth on the playa? Anyone that can truly say their home town is Black Rock City?

I wonder if any research has been done on the effect of playa dust on young developing lungs.

this post is for felix's mom: i just wanted to say that i met you and felix last year at the cupcakes and lingerie party, and i found both of you to be utterly beautiful and inspiring. it was such a treat and so unusual to see someone so brand new on the playa, especially one so adorable. i remember asking you at the time how it was going for you and noticing how your campmates seemed to be helping you out and keeping you both cool which i thought was awesome. it made me completely change my mind about the thought of having a little one at the burn, and now i think it would be such an incredible experience to share with my own baby when i have one. i'd love to see felix one year later! if you're in the neighborhood of 8:00 and Eager on tuesday or thursday afternoon, come by for sake and tutu-making (Sake TuTu Me! in the WWW). good for you, for busting thru conventional notions of babies at the burn!!
