Quick Question: How do you find out about events?

Post by QueenOfTheBeans » Mon Jul 31, 2006 3:25 pm

Why 'ello there. T-minus 28 days till my burning man cherry is popped. I want to see as much as possible while there and was wondering if you recieve some sort of guide upon arrival? Or is it up to you to just wander around and find out what events are going on when and wander around and figure out where all the camps are? I've checked out the calender online, but don't want to have to print it out and take it with me.

Danke!

Yep, you receive a guide when you show up. It has a basic guide, a map, and alittle sticker. It's nice to find stuff to do and such, but not everything is in it. So, if you are hanging out, you might need to ask someone about an event that is not in the guide.

Short answer: Yes.

They will give you a guide which you will eagerly peruse. You will mark out certain thiungs you want to be at and do.

The Kraftwerke Party at 7:00?

Empathogens for Grumpypants.

Crumpets and Trumpets at Dawn.

You will make a note of such, being careful to correctly write down the time and location.

When the appointed time comes you will set out with anticipation for your workshop on "Humane Animal and Petroleum Product Free Bondage Tricks". Now you're participatin'!

Then you'll notice something shiny in the oppisate direction and go wandering off in that direction.

Nah. They'll give you a "Who What When" guide. It is a ROUGH guide, but fun.

When the appointed time comes you will set out with anticipation for your workshop ...
... and you'll find it isn't happening at the appointed time. :-> It's all Burning Man time, so you won't sweat it.

See

for links to some events. If you know of more, add them.

Thanks a lot everybody! I admit that I am way too addicted to keeping track of time and scheduling in my day to day life, and I need to remind myself to use this opportunity to take a step back from that cause of stress and truly just be happy with going with the flow.

That being said, another question if you don't mind me indulging. Do you think there's going to be other music playing than just techno? I can stand the rave thing once or twice, but I'd love to be able to dance to some hip-hop, new wave, funk, etc....

Thanks again!

If you listen hard enough or pedal long enough you will find whatever you are after. Don't forget to bring a small pair of speakers to plug in to the Ipod or cd player for at camp entertainment. Also bring lots of bateries for the 5 times when you just get up and leave the stuff on.

Want an easy trick to deal with scheduling?
First thing you do after pulling onto the playa is take off your watch (your cellphone won't work out there, but make sure it's off as well)

There- you are now free from man-made time. You will discover that everything on the playa runs on "playa time"- it happens when it happens, unless it doesn't.

I've set out to see things on Tuesday & realize on Saturday that I forgot to actually go see them. I think I've made it to one scheduled thing outside our camp in the last 4 years.

Mark the things you want to see most off of the big events lists before you head out, but don't berate yourself for not making it to see them. Serrendipity runs amok on the playa.

Actually one year I registered our bar with the guide for some happy hours and was surpised when people showed up "on time."

Many of the camps with the coolest names and concepts may not turn out to be what you expected. :(
On the other hand, expect to find things and people completely by accident or through word-of-mouth.
Chance will decide.

What I recommend most is that as soon as you arrive (if not sooner), you take your watch, wallet (except for ice money), cell phone, etc and put them in a ziploc bag and lock them in your car.

Unless you're performing somewhere or doing a shift that's time-sensitive, you won't need the watch.

As far as music is concerned, there is an abundance of everything out there.

Yeah, and don't forget to put your keys in there, too. You don't want to be losing them!

And if you lock your keys in the car, be sure your remote fob is visible; if you can't get past the newer anti-theft stuff in the door, you can force the window down enough to stab the unlock button on the fob with a wire hanger.

My secretary and I meet everymorning over a cup of coffee to discuss my appointments. I then carry a Palm pilot or my Treo 700 with all of the meetings and activities. To keep on a strict schedule I suggest you limit your conversations to fact finding questions or inquiry..no idol chit chat for me. Taxi service should be running smooth in a counter clockwise fashion (Avoid the Esplanade during peak hours)
I typically dress with running shoes and greased inner thighs to avoid friction. I'm rarely late and if I am my secretary will keep me on track with constant text messages and reminders of the next playa event.
Man...can't wait to get back to the high stress of the Playa!

Keeping up on events is simple. As soon as you hit the playa, unpack the flatscreen and turn on BRCNN.

Force the window down? You think we bring 5-lb sledges just to pound rebar?

finding events ... and then making it to them

Post by djzip13 » Thu Aug 10, 2006 8:23 pm

I don't know about the rest of you, but I really don't understand events that start at, say, 3pm, 3am, etc. My playa watch only has sunset, sunrise, after, and before.

I think my watch might be broken!?! Just the way I like it!

wow, mine only has "light-ish" and "dark-ish"

I had one last year but I could only tell if it was working half the time- it only had "awake" and "asleep"

I usually rely on camp mates who wake me up with a: "Hey, I just saw something weird and cool."

I think I can answer your question, which for me is a good one. I thrive on live music, and although that is not my main prioirity at BM, it is a neccessity at some point.

Most of the live music is NOT scheduled in the guide. What I did was i did an online scavenger hunt previous to the event. I know what bands I love that play out there (last eyar was my first BM but not my first time seeing a lot of those bands) so I know where to find specific bands, but if you just want some random stuff, you will find it just by walking and listening.

For super fun funky crazy live non electronica, yet still innovative, I suggest these bands, listen for their names:
The Mermen
Hamsa Lila
Alma Melodiosa
ALBINO! (my playa favorite)
The Ritual
BLVD
Zilla
========
those are a few suggestions.
Check out The Fringe: Theyre at I think, 7:30 and Anxious this year. They will post a live music/DJ schedule on their website closer to next week if they havent already. Also, a lot goes on a t Center Camp. After the man burns, ALBINO! is scheduled to play this year which should sound amazing. If you like Fela Kuti or Karl Denson you will love Albino.
THere is another camp on the Esplanade that begins with an E (*sorry i forgot at the moment) but its the art works of Alex Grey. Its 4:30 and Esplanade. I hear that camp is going to have live music thruout the week too. Rumored Zilla. But ya never know.....shit, I saw THREE unplanned Michael Franti performances last year, that was wonderful! You gotta ask around. Otter Oasis is also known for thier incredible live music. Go visit them and ask what the plan is. Someone will let you know.
Hamsa Lila and BLVD are playing the Fringe Im sure....just gotta poke around on the net. Ive been making my own little personal schedule at home. I had a lot of fun going to see live music last year and its also fun tracking it down!!
Have fun!
