preparing via eplaya...
hi y'all
just wondering if eplaya is still the insipid little place where sincere people come to ask questions, only to be harshly shot down by a wicked group of more-burning-man-than-thou types... which has always been especially ironic considering that these 'MBMTT types' hardly every get off their asses to even go out to the playa.
so, i'm just wondering - is it still routine here on eplaya to turn people off to burningman?
love ya,
b.

Yes the attitude is still here. If you don't like it quit being a fucking spectator, get off your lazy ass, join in and change things.bronco2121 wrote:hi y'all

As for the 3playa it has it's problems but what board doesn't. I'm on there every day, multiple times per day. If you filter the experience and stay silent (Tiara and Precip have made it quite clear that I'm not wanted regardless of what I could contribute) you can learn a bunch of stuff. I won't hesitate to slam it...but it would be a loss for the BM community if it was to just vanish tomorrow. There are some good people over there...people that have seriously influenced almost every facet of my life and continue to do so almost every day without them even knowing it. From learning about Ethiopian food to to seeing another side of how this event is run, there's a wealth of info available there.

Sheesh, if anyone can let a little thing like online snarkiness turn them off of burning man, they have much larger issues at hand.
We're just using tough love so you won't Die to Death on the real playa. And many of us like to hear ourselves type, we think we're witty. If you don't like it, stick around and implement some change.
And if anyone is insulted by the use of "we", well I'm a freakin' princess.
Sooo, any real questions?

just goes to prove...
ask a stupid question, get some really stupid answers.
>>We're just using tough love so you won't Die to Death on the real playa.
oh yeah, thanks for saving us all, by the way. the playa is sooo dangerous, without your special brand of sarcasm, how would we survive it? GOD bless you.
as for the other comments re: participating to change things around here... you all love it here. the attitutude perpetuates itself. the real-life-people who come here get quickly bored and don't return. aint that nice. burning man, yay! eplaya, yay!
... and for those of you who are considering coming to the playa for the first time and think this nasty little culture here on eplaya might possibly reflect the mood and vibe and good feelings at the event: IT DOESN'T!!!
participate on that.

Actually, I've been thinking about this thread since yesterday, and while I find the op to be a little more hostile than nessesary I still think he has a point.
First off, at least most, if not all the people who post here, do still attend the event. The previous crew had a very dog-in-the-manger attitude about it; many of them were done with Burning Man and seemed to feel that since it was no longer enjoyable or meaningful to them, the event had run its course and should just die now. It was very hard to be a newbie on this board then; I'm not sure why I percivered as much as I did. Because I'm stubborn, mostly.
My fantasy about these people is that they should form a musical kick line and call themselves The Sun Kings (or maybe the VIX Louiss) and sing a musical number called "Apres Moi, Le Deluge." (Pardon my french.) I can see them now, in thier tights, high heels, poofy britches, curly wigs, and robes, carrying thier canes, singing "The Tuna Guys are gone, but you can still eat cake!"
Because this is my fantasy, rex drives by in a Shriner scale Neon singing (cracked reedy tenor) about how now that he doesn't go to Burning Man anymore he can love the playa with a pure love.
And in the grand finale the central Louis will be wearing a Beach Blanket Babylon hat with the man on it, and instead of burning the man will fizzle and collapse into dust.
It does help to have a little bit of a thick skin the first dozen times you post. But look what happened to Xta. We were all over her for a bit, and she ended up in the eplaya bar camp. I think there is a warmth and a desire to help now, but there is a bar set too, we just want to weed out the dead wood. Perhaps we've set up the wrong test, perhaps we inherited it from previous eplayans, but I think that in a community that does give a lot of itself (and we do on and off playa) you tend to be sure that you're not supporting a bunch of "welfare queens."
I don't know if understanding this will help any newbie, but there it is.

now that is a very good question.
why be an arse? i can only answer for myself (you'll have to ask the resident trolls individually - but that could take a while) ... i think you have to be a fucking asshole to illuminate the fucking assholes. the 'more burning man than thou' crowd can hardly resist responding to a taunt like this, and now you know who a few of them are (if you didn't already).
'recreation', to answer your questions specifically.

you had me at...
theCryptofishist,
you had me right up until 'dead wood'. it's the 'dead wood' that needs us not weeding them out the most. i want to party with the 'dead wood' and 'welfare queens', because they are the salt.
i want to hang out with the tourists and spectators and freeloaders, because they have the most to learn from whatever burnningman is. to separate them as uncool, and/or to put someone down for asking a stupid question is... is... i guess it's counter-productive and certainly not inclusive. but then that statement suggests burningman is 'something' and inclusive is part of that - which it may not be, of course depending on how you look at it.

Re: you had me at...
I think that people want different things from BM and put different things into it. A lot of the 3playans felt, and not without some justice, that they were expected to take care of people who had not prepared to take care of themselves. I'm not trying to justify their behavior, so much as contextualize it.bronco2121 wrote:i want to hang out with the tourists and spectators and freeloaders, because they have the most to learn from whatever burnningman is.
I also think that there is history and a sence of the institution of Burning Man in that judgement. If the LLC starts providing water and garbage pick up and other things to people who don't bother to take care of it themselves the event will either become prohibitavely expensive or collapse under its own weight. Now I don't know that that legitemizes the sort of kangaroo mobbing that did and does go on here, but other people are going to have a different emphasis in their burns then you do in yours.

Seconded, and I do think it's an attitude that exists on playa as well. For whatever reason there's a good contingent of vocal burners who think they know how to burn, and everyone else is wrong. It always amazes me how, when given the opportunity to recreate our culture from scratch, so many folk choose to be assholes.theCryptofishist wrote:Actually, I've been thinking about this thread since yesterday, and while I find the op to be a little more hostile than nessesary I still think he has a point.....
Too loud for you at 4am? Too bad, use ear plugs. Not wearing the right kind of clothing? You're a fucking tourist. Ask a question folk don't like? You're ignorant. Male with short hair publicly drunk? Fucking frat boy. Can't get there until after Monday? Worthless short-timer. And so on. Why, when removed from the overwhelming powerful default culture a chunk of us continue the ego fueled series of judgments and condemnations is beyond me. But we do, that we do.

Bronco: Are you that guy who rolled up on me in the park in front of my sculpture and started telling me about the "other" Burning Man that is actually the REAL one? Looking back on it, I should have just smiled and let you work through your dialog but you got me hooked and walked away with your anticipated dissapointment like somebody who is used to winning the booby prize.
I think all you really wanted was some form of validation because you liked me and didn't quite know how to invite me to like you. So I'm just gonna like you now, you ham-handed troll you.
All right, everybody. Let's love-bomb him!!!

I say - you may have a valid point 2121 but you present it like a fucking retard smacked out on crack and kitty liter and unfortunately for you because of your inability to communicate within the boundries we choose, I think the responses to you are quite approriate.
You can't just walk onto the pitch with your bat and ball and expect everyone to stop their came of "Over The Line" just because you want to play "Rounders."
Quit being such a dirty slapper and trying to cause trouble where there is none. Or should you need, I will translate that for you. If you don't like it, go the fuck away.

Probably one of the best ways to invite sarcastic comments and snarkiness on any message boards is to lead off with something sarcastic and snarky yourself. The process is called baiting, I'm not particularly fond of it.
If you come in looking for that, it's likely that's what you'll find. On the playa, on the internet, and with anything else you can I'd suggest that you check your expectations at the door and see what happens. Could be good things.
I joined e-playa a couple years ago when I was preparing for my first trip. I lurked around a lot and read a lot of posts at first (basic netiquette, I guess), and my experience has been very positive. I've gotten some great answers and ideas, and have hopefully helped a few people since then.
You may also want to check out the Burning Man 2006 Virgins tribe over on Tribe.net. Not that this place isn't good, but that's another good resource for first timers.
