for the record, alex and allyson don't have anything to do with the vikings other than they agreed to take their time and participate on one of about 75 shows we've published over the past couple of years.

they're great people, huge hearts, and are doing something incredible with their chapel in new york.

RE: the call for donations. we've done this show weekly for 2 years now all out of our own pockets and we're all broke as fuck. about 4 months ago we hit a road block in the process of converting our bus that would have kept us from bringing the bus and ourselves out to the playa this year. so we put a call out to the folks who listen to our show - and yes there's quite a few folks who do think we do a bit more than 'get drunk and yap about nothing' - in hopes if they had appreciated our sounds for some time now they might give a little back.

i don't recall holding a gun to anybody's head and i sure don't see this as any different than what NPR does or what other artists do with their fundraising, or applying for grants which you pay for out of your ticket.

and you know what, a great deal of people did help. so much so that it looks like we're going to be able to drive the veggie oil bus across the country and come out to black rock for another year. adn we'll be able to turn a lot more people onto this amazing act of civil disobediance that is Waste Veggie Oil conversion.

it's a great project and we have a lot of fun with our shows. if you all have a problem with it that's too bad, but ultimately i don't give a fuck, we're all on point here, enjoying the hell out of ourselves, and turning some people on to great information.

All the flak over this comes down to a fundraiser backlash which usually hits around this time of year. People keep spreading their tentacles out trying to tap into more and more money and before long we'll be overrun with fundraisers. It's going to look like a bunch of PTA parents trying to sell trashbags and candy for their kids with everyone hitting up everybody else...it might go over ok this year but then next year when people will naturally want more money...it will be like oh no, not again. Actually it's already like that but on a smaller scale. It's gotta stop somewhere, this looked like a good point to try and draw the proverbial line in the sand.

In this case, I really don't see the point of a backlash. You either support and donate, or move on. Backlash seems just a waste of time to me.

Sure, I know, I'm wasting time just by writing this, but me, I have a good excuse : procrastinating leaving for work.

The point is defending the values we feel are important here. If everyone that cared just took their ball and went home, it wouldn't be BM anymore. It'd be something else.

You move into someone else's neighborhood, you play by their rules. It'd be like moving to a non-catholic county and then telling them they should all be catholic now because you think so. You want backlash... heh The majority is going to shoot you down in a heartbeat.

BM is not some fuffly bunny happy place where everyone gets along. It's slightly controled anarchy. The mob will overwhelm you if you try to swim upstream. Either go with the flow, or put in the massive amout of work to change the mob's mind. Good luck...

not saying others reactions to your postings are right, but your 'i dont care what you think' response its obviously no better.

what mob? if anything, a large enough number of people seem to be significant enough to warrent thier own place and right to voice themselves as much as anyone else.
